Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 11, 2011

“We have the certainty that the Lord Jesus never abandons us in our search for unity, because His Spirit is tirelessly at work to support the efforts we make to overcome all forms of division. This is what Christ asks of Christians: to persevere in prayer in order to keep alive the flame of faith, hope and char-ity, and the longing for full unity.”

~~Pope Benedict XVI

Prayer of the Week As a prayer for the victims of 9/11 and the heroes, and

for peace in our hearts and world.

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can

and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time,

enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,

taking, as He did, the sinful world as it is, not as I would have it,

trusting that He will make all things right if I will surrender to His will;

that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever

in the next. Amen.

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

Your brother in Jesus,

Father John

Please pray for our loved ones who are hospitalized or ill, including: Virginia Griesenauer, Glennon Naeger

Beginning this week, we will resume praying the Rosary on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm at the Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Everyone is welcome to pray with us!

ARE YOU SOMEONE, OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO…

Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been

baptized? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not cele-

brated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucha-rist?

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare indi-viduals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confir-mation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your ques-tions, your insights and your faith story in a warm, ac-cepting setting.

Sessions are on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the school. For information, please contact Becca McCullough at 946-2916.

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“None of us lives for oneself . . . whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” ROMANS 14:7-8

Whatever we have in this life, we have because God gave it to us. We may think that we get all the credit for our success. However, the reality is that we are only working with the gifts that God gave us—including our family background, our natural abilities, our education and the opportunities that have crossed our paths. All of these are gifts from God. Our very lives are a gift from God and thus belong to Him. This is why we must take time every day to ask God how He wants us to use the life He has given us.

Aware that our lives are gifts from God and all that we have belongs to Him, we pray that we may become more faithful and generous in sharing our time, our talents and our treas-ures.

Eucharistic Adoration at St. Charles Bor-romeo is held the 3rd Monday of each month (September 19) from 8:30am to 6:30pm, and we especially need an individual or two for the hours of 10-11am and 4-5pm. Please call Carol Pappas at 928-6722 or [email protected].

We offer our prayerful sympathy to teacher Jean Grant on the death of her sister Norma Moranville, and to Dorothy Wilson on the death of her brother Sidney J. Wilson. May they, and all the faithful departed, rest in the eternal peace of Christ.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

St. Charles Borromeo School

Dear Parishioners:

We thank God for the many blessings we have as a parish school and especially for this Unity Day! Being united in Jesus describes our work at school with the students and their families as well as all the parish! We hope all members of the parish enjoy this day together!

Monday our 6th Grade students along with some of their teachers will attend Leadership Camp. The opportunity for our students to develop their leadership and cooperative skills in an outdoor setting strengthens the class as individuals and as a group. Pray for continued great weather for our students!

God bless, Mrs. Ann Hoffman

SCB Religious Education The PSR Classes this weekend begin at 10am in Bales/DuSable Park. Parents and students are reminded to bring their paper chain link to the park so that they can be connected to all the others and we will make a giant Eucharistic chain depicting our unity with each other and in Jesus Christ. This chain will be displayed in the church Narthex, to remind us to pray for one another.

Next week we begin Children’s Liturgy of the Word for children in grades K to 4 during the 8:30am Mass. Watch for the Liturgy Ministry Leader who will lead the children to and from the café!

Ladies of our Parish—this is for You! Women’s Fellowship continues on the 2nd and 4th Sat-urdays 6am to 8am. We have just selected a study from Little Rock Scripture Study. LRSS develops and distributes Bible study materials for adult Catholics in parishes and small faith communities who want to continue on their journey of faith. This ministry was created in the Diocese of Little Rock in Arkansas and continues as a ministry of the Diocese, in partnership with Liturgical Press in Minne-sota. Women in our parish are invited to participate in the Bible study: Women in the New Testament. This study has 8 lessons, and as we learned from our previous gath-ers, we need time to reflect and discuss these lessons. So, we will take about 8 months to go through each lesson—answering about half the questions each time we meet. For more information call Carrie Kremer 922-2564 or Becca McCullough 946-2916. The Fall gatherings are:

September 24 October 8 October 22

Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, September 11, 2011

Getting Ready for the New Roman Missal Beginning November 26/27 A time for renewed attendance and participation and love for our Mass

The following timetable will be used at our parish to prepare for the changes beginning Advent 2011:

October 2: Worshipping with Body, Mind, Soul, Music, Voice and Silence: Why we greet, genuflect, bow, kneel, stand, sit and shake hands, etc.

October 9: The Introductory Rites: Penitential Rite and Gloria (which will be practiced at the end of the homily and will be used every time the Gloria is sung from then on)

October 16: The Liturgy of the Word: Listening to God’s voice in the sacred Scriptures and the following silence, and our response in the Creed and General Intercessions

October 23: The Liturgy of the Eucharist: Offering and Preparation of our Gifts, Preface and Holy, Holy (which will be practiced after homily and used from then on)

October 30: The Eucharistic Prayer(s): Participating in the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ’s dying, rising and return in the Epiclesis, Consecration, Anamnesis, Acclamation, and Great Amen.

November 6: Preparing for Holy Communion: The Lord’s Prayer, Sign of Peace, Lamb of God, “Lord, I am not worthy . . . “ (these sung parts will be practiced again after homily and used then on)

November 13: Holy Communion: Transubstantiation into the Real Presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

November 20: The Concluding Rite: Sent out to live the Mass as the Body of Christ.

Fun & friends!

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Revised Archdiocesan Guidelines for the Use of Alcohol at Parish Functions The fellowship and hospitality we provide at parish events is a sign of our vitality and a witness to the communion we share in Jesus Christ. But it is also an indication of the serious responsibility we have to promote strong moral values and to protect those who are most vulnerable—especially our children and youth. Hospitality and fellowship are important to our Catholic identity. So are the virtues of prudence and temperance. These guidelines, approved by Archbishop Carlson, seek to promote an appropriate balance in our parish activities. We have been asked to implement these guidelines in all applicable parish functions.

GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF BEVERAGE ALCOHOL

The following guidelines regarding serving beverage alcohol have been developed for all parishes, parish organizations, agencies, and entities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

1. All federal, state and local laws and ordinances must be observed. This includes regula-tions required for the sale of alcohol, prohibiting the distribution of alcohol to minors and not serving alcohol to intoxicated persons.

2. The group or organization sponsoring an activity or event at which alcoholic beverages are to be served must have permission from the pastor of the parish or the director of the agency that hosts the event or activity.

3. Alcoholic beverages and food containing alcohol must be clearly labeled or identified as such.

4. Alcoholic beverages that are designed to facilitate rapid alcohol consumption, including grain alcohol and shots, are prohibited.

5. Whenever alcohol is served, non-alcoholic alternatives must always be offered with equal accessibility.

6. The serving or use of alcoholic beverages at events should not be “actively marketed” during the event.

7. It is preferable that alcohol not to be served to anyone or brought in by someone, includ-ing adults, at any event directed primarily to and for minors. This includes elementary and high school events, CYC events, Scouting activities, etc.

8. All adults should be mindful of their Christian responsibility to drink in moderation and to give a good example to our youth. “Clergy, employees and volunteers should never be involved with the illegal possession and/or illegal use of drugs and/or alcohol. They must never supply such substances to minors nor may they consume alcohol while functioning in an official capacity with minors. This includes those who are involved with children as coaches or managers of sports teams.” (Code of Ethical Conduct for Clergy, Employees and Volunteers Working with Minors § 4.5)

9. Parish and agency leaders are responsible for ensuring these guidelines are made known and observed.

Approved by the Presbyteral Council March 17, 2011 and Promulgated by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson April 26, 2011

Addendum: It is further moved that the Priests’ Council will review these guidelines and the cul-ture they are trying to create in our parishes and Archdiocese in two years time.

Let us pray: for the American people on the tenth anni-versary of 9/11, that the memory of this act of terrorism will instill in us a deeper dedication to the cause of peace in the world and a greater respect for human life.

Spiritual Adoption Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, Borromeo Parish an-nounces an adoption program for young and old alike. This weekend the parish family will have the oppor-tunity to “spiritually adopt” a child who has been newly conceived this month. Not all preborn babies are al-lowed to be born. In fact, more than 3,200 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to spiritually “adopt” by praying for them. You may spiritually adopt a child individually or as a family by accepting a Prayer card that will be given out after all Masses this weekend. You will name the child for whom you will be praying, thereby acknowledging the humanity that each baby already has. Every day pray the prayer on the back of the card, for the power of prayer is great. Monthly reports through the parish bulletin will de-scribe your baby’s development. At the end of 9 months we will celebrate the births of our “spiritually adopted” babies and share the joy by bringing new baby items to church which will then be donated to pregnant mothers in need. Millions of preborn babies are desperately in need of your prayers. Won’t you please “spiritually adopt” one and share the love for life that God has given you? If you miss it this weekend contact the church office or Sandy B 636-947-3421 and we will see that you get a prayer card. Our Pro Life Ministry is responsible for workers for 2 booths, Saturday and Sunday at the PARISH PICNIC. If you helped last year and would like a special time to work, call me and I will put you on the list right away. Sandy B 636-947-3421.

Prayer Shawl Ministry ...will be meeting Wednesday, September 14 at 6pm in the church office. If you love to crochet or knit and would like to sup-port the Prayer Shawl Ministry, please stop by on Wednesday to pick up yarn and

instructions. If you know someone who could benefit from one of our beautiful shawls please contact Regina Yanics: 314-753-7524 or [email protected].

Parent Support Network A spiritual gathering for parents experiencing or have

experienced challenges in parenting.

Coming to St. Charles Borromeo Thursday, September 22, 7:00 p.m., Bicentennial Room

Are you seeking support from parents with a child like yours? This network seeks to offer spiritual support, re-sources, and sharing for parents of children who have a physical, mental, educational, or emotional disability. Maybe your child is experiencing difficulties from autism, physical disabilities, adoption, divorce, or family illness. Perhaps you have lived and learned from these situations and want to share your knowledge with other parents. We are a group of parents desiring to have a place to share our thoughts, feelings, and needs and to give each other support in dealing with situations we may have in any part of our lives! We want to establish a network of support and resources to help us be better parents in our Christian community. Join us as we gather in September to start this net-work. Confidentiality is a given! What is shared in this network of parents will stay with the network! Join us on September 22 to help us kick off this faith-based network.

Que significó para mi asistir al CRHP? Mucho!

Christ Renews His Parish

What did attending CRHP mean to me? A lot! Too many items to list, but among other things it has helped me bring me and my family closer to Jesus, increased my prayer time, allowed me to deal with issues in my life with greater ease, helped me become more patient, a better husband and father, smile more, introduced me to people I would have never known before, given me op-portunities in life I wouldn’t have previously had, made Sunday morning masses more meaningful and enjoyable, and taught me the true meaning of community. In short, it has made life for myself and my family more meaning-ful, enjoyable and relaxing.
