IronyIrony

There are three kinds of irony: verbal, situational, and dramatic.

Page 2: Masque of Red Death Sept 13

Verbal IronyVerbal Irony

Verbal irony is when the speaker says the opposite of what they really mean.

Example: Ms. Sanders says, “I love doing report cards. I just love, love, love it.”

Verbal irony is associated with sarcasm.

Situational IronySituational Irony

Situational irony is when events turn out differently than originally expected.

Example: You need a knife but all you can find is 10,000 spoons.

Situational IronySituational Irony

Think about a situation in your own life when you experience situational irony. Share that experience with a partner.

Dramatic IronyDramatic IronyA circumstance in which characters reveal their inability to understand their own situation. Dramatic irony is more effective when characters make fateful choices based on information the reader realizes is incorrect.

For example, in “To Build A Fire,” the man believed that he was capable of overcoming the cold and chose to continue towards camp instead of turning back.

In “The Sniper”, the main character thinks he has killed his enemy, but he has actually killed his brother.

Quotation How this quotation fits the type of irony

“That was a fine show, eh?”“Very good,” I answered, turning back for the brush.

This is verbal irony because the barber is saying the exact opposite of what he really means. In reality, he despises Torres and is disgusted by what he did.

In the doorway he paused for a moment, and turning to me he said: “They told me that you’d kill me. I came to find out. But killing isn’t easy. You can take my word for it.”

This is situational irony, which is when events turn out differently than originally expected. One would automatically suspect that the barber decided against killing Captain Torres, and that the Captain would just leave, however, this quotation comes as a surprise for us because it reveals Captain Torres’ knowledge about the barber’s political views.

He went to the hanger for his belt, pistol, and cap. I must have been very pale, for my shirt was soaked. Torres finished adjusting the buckle, straightened his pistol in the holster and after automatically smoothing down his hair, he put on the cap.

This is dramatic irony because the characters reveal their inability to understand their own situation. As Captain Torres knew, the barber was his enemy, a person part of the group he sought to kill. However, since the barber didn’t know that Captain Torres knew, he did not understand what the Captain could have done with the pistol.

The Black Death• 1. The Black Death: 1348-

1350

• 2. The origins of the Black Death: The plague bacteria are thought to have spread from central Asia. From the mid-thirteenth century, increased commercialization in Europe opened up silk routes, and the reading posts set up to service the region formed convenient stepping stones for infected fleas to break out of the area.

• 3. By 1350, between 25% and 50% of Europe's population had fallen victim of the pestilence.
