"Okt yabrskaya" metro stat ion has been chosen as a model for this project, which is a an intersect ion point of a few major transport arteries – Kol-cevaya and Radialnaya lines of metro, Sadovoe kolco and Leniniskiy pros-pect streets. This is, indeed where traff ic jams start on the daily basis right to the heart of the cit y. Once the residents had a chance to leave their car, and proceed their travel by metro, such transport issues could be par-t ially avoided in rush hour.Building site for development is current ly a small green zone above the un-derground surrounded by 4 roads. Due to the ecolog y and lack of attent ion plants and trees are dying. In the end, there is a small island of grass with dying plants, without any clear funct ion to it.The object ive became clear — to transform this land to a funct ional and purposeful space, yet saving the green zone and making it more public-friendly. Consequently the green zone is raised to a third storey, leaving all the space to a parking zone. In addit ion to that, the plants get a chance of sur viving with better ecolog y and a larger distance from the road. The exist ing public green space — Kaluzhskaya square, now has a strong connect ion with the roof of the establishment.

Reconst ruct ion of t his suburban area incudes building social communal housing, private accommodat ion, a school and a kindergarten. It a lso has a text i le mill founded in t he end of 17t h cent ur y, which is t rans-formed into a cult ural center, a new at t ract ion t hat has to bring more tourists to t he town.Whole region is stretched along the river, which is not anyhow includ-ed in the daily life of the cit y. Adding an embankment adds gravit y to it. Far away from the roads, it becomes a new pedestrian arter y of the cit y connect ing new regions with a historic centre. Since both the school and kingergarten have an exit to the embankment, it allows kids to travel to school in safet y, without a necessit y to cross any roads.

Main object ive of the project was to create a communal building, which would meet the aesthet ic and funct ional requirements of the assignment. Primar y material used here is reinforced concrete. Outer surface of the façade has movable wooden panels, which reveal windows. On the back, panels are f inished with a material that ref lects ray heat, thus reducing the costs on central heat ing. Part icular combinat ion of materials, namely wood and stone, is ver y peculiar - it is especially t ypical for Russian 18th centur y buildings, known as “podkletnaya izba” (wooden living house), which have a foundation made ent irely out of stone. Modern Borovsk st ill has a signif icant amount of these kind of buildings, which may be consid-ered as Borovsk’s dist inct ive feature.

School has been designed on the foundation of a previously designed re-counstruct ion of the region in Borovsk townThe establishment has t wo entrances – one from the road and from the embankment. Thus, kids that are traveling to school by foot may walk the distance through the embankment without crossing any roads. The polygon shape of the building is achieved by relat ive layering of t wo xy panes. First is relat ive to the town plan, while the second one points to all cardinal direct ions. The surface of t he building by itself is a system of narrow vert ical panes, which cont rol t he f low of daylight t hrough t he building. Part of t he roof is a pedest rian green zone wit h a great view on t he river, separated from t he road wit h a t a l ler part of t he building. In addit ion to t hat, t hose on t he roof may obser ve t he g ymnasium t hrough windows located on its second t ier perimeter.

Archiectural term «club» is a term, which out lived itself in the late 80s. Def init ion of that is a building, specif ically designed for certain t ypes of leisure for certain social groups of people. Thus, it has a social divide in its foundation from the start. I have left the space requirements of this assignment and changed its name to “Mult i-purpose public center”. My target has become to design a building, funct ions of which will not only sat isf y the needs of the local residents, but to create a universal social platform, which would add vi-brancy to the town and develop cultural progress in the cit y. Borovsk has been chosen as a cit y model for this project. This town has a rich histor y and there is a great number of objects of cultural heritage. Despite the fact that Borovsk is only 80 km far from Moscow, it seems ver y distant and isolated from the capital, especially due to the public trans-port dif f icult ies. Since locals cannot easily travel to Moscow, def iciency of cult ivat ion is ver y visible indeed.I have been given a choice to choose a region for this assignement, and have decided to locate it in the historical heart of the cit y, which is easily accessi-ble. I have also, however, placed it in a cozy and quite place, where residents would enjoy their walks and where one could interact with the nature.I also found myself striving to integrate the building within the sur-rounding architectural and natural landscape. For example, from the side of the entrance, which is located on the main square, a visitor only sees a small part of the building, whereas the rest of the volume is seamlessly buried within the relief of the landscape. In addit ion to that, the f inish-ing is made of wood, a material, which is used in 75 percent of facilit ies of town, which connects historical culture with architecture. In the analyzing process I have noticed that, despite the presence of a riv-er, almost none of the local residents spent t ime down at the water. This may be due to inexistense of an actual embankment, the shore looks wild and not suited for walking. In the course of t ime, river has fallen out of ever yday life of the residents, and its historic importance has been for-gotten. One of the object ives for me was to reunite the town and the river. River is a reference point for this building, it can be seen almost from ever y chamber. Also, the building has an addit ional funct ional of a stair-way to it. The shape of the building allows people to walk down to the river

38

without entering the establishment by using the stairs located on the roof. Due to the features of the landscape, with an orientat ion to the river, it ap-pears that all windows are overlooking north. To f ill the building with a right amount of sunlight, I deformed the rectangle elements so that the façade is not facing north completely. Problems of illumination are solved with large glass panes. Considering the Russian climate, such large pane may seem like a ver y ineffect ive solut ion. To compensate that, I used shutters where one side is f inished with wood, and the other with a ray heat f inishing. During the night these are closed and so the loss of heat is reduced, therefore reducing the cost of heat ing. These shutters may also be used during the summer, when protect ion against direct sunrays is so needed, or during the dayt ime to darken the inside space for special events. (for example for a f ilm show).

Hitrovka is one of the central districts in central part of Moscow. 90% of buildings at Hitrovka are 2-3-storied houses, some of them are built in in 17 centur y. The only square in the area is Hitrovka Square, but several years ago cit y administrat ion started to build 25f loor business center right on the square. That could totally destroy the district. After a series of cit izens manifestat ions, building of a center was cancelled, since then square is closed and nothing is done about its reconstruct ion. While creat ing the project I was tr ying to think of a new cultural center that would attract people to the area, but at the same t ime would be useful for those who live in the nearby houses. That is why I’ve made a decision to place all the exhibit ion spaces underground, and to create recreat ion pedestrian zones on its roof. So far museum project consists of 3 parts: underground exhibit ion space, small one-storied off ice building for mu-seum workers and narrow 4-storied building, where café, librar y, book-store ant the main entrance hall are situated.

"1:1" project is an epitomized sculpture of the terrain. The shape of the car ving itself is not of a random locat ion, but of a part icular place associ-ated with my own personal biography, histor y and memories. The formal solution of the sculpture was designed after measuring the land, depleting a method that is often used to create cartographic drawings.I did not make up the form of this specif ic work, but "borrowed" it from the actual surface, which it closely represents. Having said that, it was only the sceleton that was taken from a complex multilayered and disordered image of the nature. Details and distinctions of surfaces, their texture and color are scrubbed, erased; the object then acquires a geometric purit y and homo-geneit y. Material and visual qualit ies deprive the sculpture of the sensitive element and leave the mathematical accuracy of technical and intellectual operations. Its visual features aggressively emphasize the artif icialit y of things and the fact that it has been indeed man-made.Reproducing the topography on a scale of 1:1, motivated by a plea to un-derstand the terms upon its visual representation I was eager to see if it will affect me in person, especially my emotional reaction to that specif ic location. This is an exploration of whether it is possible to def ine the proce-dures and mechanisms, the use of which in the cultural f ield allows you to label the "source" of subjective perception and assign it as a whole memory.

The main idea of the project was to combine an exhibit ion with a discus-sion spot in one space thus creat ing a clear connect ion bet ween the works of art and the discussions behind them. At least 16 art ists took part in this exhibit ion, most of which would present video pieces. Large amounts of those videos pushed me to hang the screens in such a way, that they split the space and therefore become part it ions themselves.
