The End of an Era

February 19 marked the endof an era at the NationalShrine. That afternoon,

Bishop Michael Bransfield cel-ebrated his farewell Mass at theShrine and brought to a conclu-sion a quarter century of dedi-cated service to America’sPatronal Church, the Basilica ofthe National Shrine of the Im-maculate Conception. Duringthe same celebration, CardinalTheodore McCarrick, the Arch-bishop of Washington andChairman of the Shrine Board ofTrustees appointed me the Act-ing Rector. For the past eight years I havehad the privilege of being theDirector of Pilgrimages here atthe Shrine and am honored toserve as Acting Rector until thesearch committee recommends apriest to serve as BishopBransfield’s successor.

During this interim period,the Shrine will continue to

chart the course forged byBishop Bransfield. As you know,during the past 25 years, throughhis excellent stew-ardship, BishopBransfield hasformed this NationalShrine into a mag-nificent “hymn instone,” fostering de-votion to ourBlessed Lady andbeing a center ofprayer and pilgrim-age for Catholicsthroughout theUnited States andbeyond. We see thisso clearly in thetransformation ofthe Shrine duringBishop Bransfield’stenure, a summarymay be on pages 3-7of this edition. Of course BishopBransfield’s efforts

will continue through the min-istry of our devoted staff. Butwe will also rely on your con-tinued support as well. Each ofyou has contributed to the suc-cess of the National Shrine andI hope that you will continue toassist us in the future throughyour prayers, your visits andpilgrimages and through what-ever financial assistance youare able to lend.

In his apostolic letter for theYear of the Eucharist, Pope

John Paul II invokes the help ofthe Virgin Mary during this spe-cial year and reminds us that“the Church, which looks toMary as a model, is also calledto imitate her.” During thistransition period at the Shrine,please join with me in lookingto our Lady to help us continuethe great work begun by BishopBransfield. May each of usstrive to imitate Mary by say-ing “yes” to God in our dailylives, trusting that God will sus-tain and support us as he didthe Blessed Virgin Mary.

Papal CDThe Shrine choir, together with anumber of Shrine docents traveledto Rome in early March. The choirperformed several times, includingat the Basilica of St. Mary Major andoutside the Gemelli Hospital, dur-ing Pope John Paul II’s brief staythere. The choir also recorded a al-bum of music in honor of the HolyFather’s papacy. It is tentativelyscheduled to be released on compactdisc (CD) for the Feast of Sts. Peterand Paul (June 29). “The choir was wonderfully re-ceived everywhere that they sang,”

Eucharistic CongressThe Council of MajorSuperiors of Women Re-ligious sponsored a Eu-charistic Congress at theNational Shrine Sept.24-25, 2004. The event

attracted pilgrims from across thecountry and culminated in a beau-tiful fireworks display over theShrine. Francis Cardinal Arinze,Prefect of the Congregation forDivine Worship and the Disci-

pline of the Sacra-ments was theprincipal cel-ebrant of the clos-ing Mass and ledan outdoor Eucharistic Procession.Pope John Paul II designated the pe-riod from October 2004-October2005 as a Year of the Eucharist.

Shrine Rector Named BishopOn Dec. 9, 2004, Pope John PaulII named Msgr. Michael J.Bransfield, rector of the Basilicaof the National Shrine of the Im-maculate Conception, as Bishop ofWheeling-Charleston. BishopBransfield, 61, was ordained apriest of the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia May 15, 1971 by the lateJohn Cardinal Krol. A Philadelphia native, the bishopis the third of four boys born to thelate Vincent and Mary Jane(Granahan) Bransfield. He waseducated in the Philadelphiaarchdiocesan school system andconducted his studies for the priest-hood at St. Charles BorromeoSeminary in Overbrook, Pa., wherehe received a master’s degree in di-vinity. He later earned a master’sdegree in philosophy from The

Catholic University of America inWashington, D.C. The bishop was assigned to theNational Shrine of the ImmaculateConception as Director of Liturgyin 1980 and was named its Direc-tor of Finance in 1982. He becamethe National Shrine’s tenth execu-tive director in 1986. Pope JohnPaul II named Bishop Bransfield aPrelate of Honor in 1987. He wasmade the Shrine’s first rector in1990 when the Pope designated theShrine a Basilica. Bishop Bransfield became theeighth bishop of Wheeling-Charles-ton, a diocese that encompasses thestate of West Virginia, succeedingBishop Bernard W. Schmitt. Hisepiscopal ordination and installa-tion took place Feb. 22, 2005 (seepages 4-5). “I am honored and deeply grate-

Immaculate Conception Essay ContestDuring the Marian Year of the Immaculate Concep-tion, the National Shrine and the Knights of Colum-bus jointly sponsored an essay contest for high schoolseniors. The theme was, “Devotion to the BlessedVirgin Mary and Growth in the Spiritual Life.” The winner was Miss Theresa Little from the Dio-cese of Bismark. Theresa is ahomeschooled student whocompeted through TrinityHigh School in Dickinson,N.D. She and her family trav-eled to Washington to partici-pate in the solemn liturgy ofthe Immaculate ConceptionDec. 8, 2004, which was cel-ebrated by a papal envoy, JanCardinal Schotte. She receivedher award during the Massfrom the Shrine’s rector, Msgr.Michael Bransfield, and Su-preme Knight Carl Anderson.

Long-time National Shrine Rector Ordained Bishop of ‘Almost Heaven’ by Colleen Rowan

Catholics across West Virginia and neigh-boring states gathered at the Cathe-

dral of St. Joseph in Wheeling Feb. 22to celebrate the ordination and instal-lation of Bishop Michael J.Bransfield, former rector of theBasilica of the National Shrineof the Immaculate Conception,as the eighth bishop of Wheel-ing-Charleston. Cardinal William H.Keeler of Baltimore was theprincipal ordaining bishop,with Cardinal Theodore E.McCarrick of Washing-ton and Bishop EmeritusBernard W. Schmitt ofWheeling-Charlestonas co-consecrators. Cardinal JustinRigali of Philadelphiaand ArchbishopGabriel Montalvo,apostolic nuncio tothe United States,also concelebrated.They processed intothe cathedral alongwith more than 50bishops from acrossthe country and morethan 200 priests anddeacons. In his homily, Car-dinal Keeler spoke ofthe role of a bishopand prayed thatBishop Bransfieldwould be “an examplefor all to follow” as hebegan his mission asthe shepherd of thepeople of Wheeling-Charleston. “Today we celebrate,”he said. “Tomorrow hewill come down from themountain and begin themission of proclaiming thegood news.” Speaking at the start of theMass, Cardinal Rigali said theordination of Bishop Bransfield,a priest of the Archdiocese ofPhiladelphia, gave the Pennsylva-nia archdiocese “the honor of offer-ing one of our priests” to the Wheel-ing-Charleston Diocese.

“He will be a faithful shepherd, a zeal-ous evangelizer and a faithful pastor who

will love and serve you in the name ofJesus Christ,” the Cardinal said.

Cardinal McCarrick then thankedBishop Bransfield for his 25 yearsof service at the Basilica of theNational Shrine, 18 of whichwere as its rector. “Today he begins a new pil-grimage to ‘Almost Heaven,West Virginia,’” the cardinaladded, drawing laughs andapplause at the reference tothe John Denver songabout the state. “And Ihave no doubt he will findit here with all the greatpeople of this diocese.” After ordaining him,Cardinal Keeler anoint-ed Bishop Bransfield’shead with the sacredchrism and presentedhim with the Book ofthe Gospels and thesymbols of his new of-fice — the miter andthe crosier. He then ledhim to the cathedra, orbishop’s chair, fol-lowed by CardinalMcCarrick and BishopSchmitt. After he was seated,the people joyfully ap-plauded their newbishop. “I thank you for re-ceiving me so warmly,”Bishop Bransfield saidat the end of the Mass.“I look forward to walk-ing with you along thepath of grace and holi-

ness. I ask for your con-tinuing prayers that I may

always prove a sure andworthy guide in your lives of

faith. May God always giveme the wisdom and fortitude to

lead you with ardor, with fervorand with true charity.

united in faith, hope and love in service to one another and toall who are in need of our Christian prayer and support.” Bishop Bransfield said he was grateful to Bishop Schmitt,who headed the diocese from 1989 until his retirement lastDecember, and to all his distinguished predecessors in Wheel-ing-Charleston. “You have laid a strong foundation upon whichI hope to build,” he said. “For this I am grateful to you andask your continued prayerful support.” The new bishop also expressed gratitude to his siblings andtheir wives, as well as other relatives and his late parents,Vincent and Jane Bransfield. “Though the Lord has called them to himself, their loveand their example lives on, and the spiritual union we sharetoday is a true consolation,” he said. But his final words of thanks and acknowledgment were tothe Blessed Mother. “I have had great devotion to Our Lady from my youth,nurtured by my parents,” Bishop Bransfield said. “I entrustedmy priesthood to her, and I entrust my episcopal ministry toher as well. She has been a source of many great blessingsthroughout my life, and I have every confidence that she, alongwith her husband and our patron, St. Joseph, will continue tointercede for me, and for our diocese in its every need.”

Bishop’s Coat-of-Arms Has Referencesto Mary & National Shrine

Bishops’ coats-of-arms have their ori-gins in heraldic laws and traditions,and are governed by regulations issuedby the Vatican Secretary of State. Thearms of each bishop denote his eccle-siastical rank by color and the numberof tassels on both sides. A cardinal’s hatis red with 15 tassels on each side. Anarchbishop has a green hat with tentassels, and a bishop has a green hatwith six tassels. The central and mostsignificant portion of the arms is theshield. A bishop who is an ordinaryhas his personal arms joined on the shield with the armsof his diocese. Behind the shield is a processional cross.Beneath the shield is a banner bearing the bishop’s epis-copal motto. In designing his coat-of-arms, BishopMichael Bransfield selected elements that refer to OurBlessed Mother and her National Shrine, where heserved for 25 years. Deacon Paul J. Sullivan was theartist for the bishop’s coat-of-arms. Following are ex-cerpts his description.

By heraldic tradition the arms of the bishop ofa diocese, called the Ordinary, are joined, im-

paled, with the arms of his jurisdiction. In thiscase, these are the arms of the Diocese of Wheel-ing-Charleston. These arms are composed of ared field on which is seen a base composed of sixalternating chevrons of silver (white) and green.The chevrons are used to signify the mountainsof West Virginia that are such a significant as-pect of the geography of the region. Overall, inthe design, is a golden lily to honor Saint Joseph,patron of the Cathedral-Church of Wheeling. For his personal arms, His Excellency, BishopBransfield has selected a design that reflects hislife and his heritage. The design is composed ofthree main elements. At the center, on a silver(white) central bar called a fess, are three redplates, in heraldry called torteaux, each charged

with a silver cross. This is a vari-ant on the arms of William Pennfor whom the bishop’s home stateof Pennsylvania is named and

these charges are part of the armsof the Archdiocese of Philadelphia,the bishop’s home diocese. Abovethe fess is a manuscript “M,” astaken from a display in the Basilicaof the National Shrine of the Im-maculate Conception, in Wash-ington, D.C., where Bishop

Bransfield served for over 24 years, the most re-cent as Rector. The use of this “M,” signifies thebishop’s deep devotion to the Blessed VirginMary, but it is also taken from the arms of HisHoliness, Pope John Paul II, who has named HisExcellency to receive the fullness of the holypriesthood as a bishop. In the base of the design are five stalks of wheatissuant from the base. In the “Year of The Eucha-rist,” as declared by The Holy Father, as BishopBransfield enters his new ministry for TheChurch, these stalks of wheat are used to “cant”(i.e., to play on) the Bishop’s name. Bran is thesubstance between the husk and the kernel of anyof the cereal grains and so by using several stalksof such a cereal, graphically, we are representinga field of bran, thus, “Bransfield.”

For his motto, His Excellency, BishopBransfield has adopted the phrase from The

Lord’s Prayer, “Thy Will Be Done.” By the useof this phrase, His Excellency expresses not onlythe sentiments of Our Lady at the Annunciation,but that all of us, as devout Christians, must al-ways put God’s Holy Will before any of our owndesires if we are to achieve the rewards that ourDivine Lord has promised.

Mary’s Shrine v Spring-Summer 2005

During his 18 years as rector of the National Shrine,Bishop Michael J. Bransfield undertook many ini-tiatives to beautifyand enhance theShrine as an interna-tionally known Mari-an sanctuary and pil-grimage site. Theprojects ranged fromrefinishing the wood-en pews and doors andinstalling flower gar-dens to adding rest-rooms and replacingthe heating plant. Certainly, none ofthese projects de-scribed are asnoteworthy as themany initiativesthe bishop under-took to adorn andembellish theShrine with beau-tiful sacred art.The number ofsuch projects hecompleted ex-ceeds 50, and willalways be re-garded as a sig-nificant andbeautiful legacy: Construc-tion of the chapels inhonor of Our Lady ofMariazell (Austria), OurLady of Hope (Pontmain,France), and Our Motherof Africa; oratories inhonor of Our Lady ofAntipolo (Philippines),Our Lady of Vailankanni(India), the Holy Family(Resting on the Flight intoEgypt), Our Mother of Di-vine Providence, Our Ladyof Ephesus, and Our Ladyof Altötting (Germany);installation of the marblerelief of the Universal Callto Holiness, along with the mosaic and marble em-bellishment of the Upper Church narthex and vesti-bule; commissioning and installation of the statues ofBlessed Kateri Tekakwitha, St. Rose PhilippineDuchesne, and St. Katharine Drexel; construction ofMary’s Garden; installation of the mosaics of OurLady of La Salette and Our Lady of China; stainedglass windows of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Vener-able Pierre Toussaint, Mother Mary Lange; Fr.Michael J. Also during the bishop’s tenure theNational Shrine designated a Basilicaby Pope John Paul II and inscribed,among the other major churches of theworld, on the floor of St. Peter’s Ba-silica in Rome. Projects that Bishop Bransfield hadinitiated before his departure andwhich are presently underway include

the mosaic dome of Redemption, the Chapel of OurLady of La Vang (Vietnam), the Oratories of OurLady of Ta’ Pinu (Malta) and Santa Marian Kamalen(Our Lady of Camarin), a marble relief of Our Ladyof Korea, and the statue of Mother Theodore Guerin. All these projects have served to give tribute tothe Blessed Virgin Mary and make her NationalShrine a place of beauty and distinction.

Late last year, His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, appointed me to serve as the

Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, a diocese that encompasses the entire state of

West Virginia. I was ordained and installed as bishop February 22, the Feast of the

Chair of St. Peter.

The speed with which all this happened left me no opportunity to formally offer my

farewell and to thank you for entrusting your needs and prayer petitions to the

National Shrine for so many years while I was its rector. Please allow me this

occasion to do so, and to encourage you to continue your support of the National

Shrine along with me.

During my tenure I was delighted to see the number of pilgrims and spiritual

events at the National Shrine increase each year. It has become a pilgrimage site

for many dioceses and Catholic organizations across the nation and a spiritual

center for good people from across the world who travel to Washington, D.C. The

Shrine is a powerful place of prayer and devotion, and provides six Masses and

five or more hours of confessions each day.

Please be assured that the National Shrine remains in capable care and that a new

rector will be appointed soon to keep it firmly rooted as our nation’s preeminent

Marian Shrine and a great center of devotion to our Blessed Mother.

Mary’s Shrine v Spring-Summer 2005

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immacu-late Conception will soon dedicate a new oratory inhonor of Our Lady of Altötting. The Oratory is lo-cated at the end of the ambulatory in the east apse ofthe Great Upper Church. It is the gift of the Arch-bishop of Cologne, Joachim Cardinal Meisner, un-der the direction of Msgr. Alois Furtner. The statue isan exact copy of the original, which is venerated atShrine of Our Lady of Altötting, Bavaria, Germany.Included in the case is a Brautsrosenkranz or a Bride’srosary made of coral and ornamented with silverwork. The design and construction of the Oratorywas completed by Rambusch Inc., in January 2005.

The original statue is an early Gothic figure fromthe beginning of the 14th Century. Hand carved

of Lindenwood (literally, “soft wood”, a.k.a.limewood). The statue is 25 inches tall with gar-ments of a rich baroque style. The darkening of thehands and face is from centuries of candle soot andfire. According to ancient stories, the statue was res-cued from a great fire in the year 907. It is thoughtto have come to Altötting via the Cistercian Abbeyof Raitenhaslach, located between Salzburg andAltötting, not far from Burghausen. The statue stands in a richly decorated silver tab-ernacle created in 1645. To the right of the altar, analmost life-size solid silver sculpture of Bavaria’sDuke Maximilian Joseph kneels praying before theshrine. It was an offering by his father, Elector KarlAlbrecht, for his 10-year-old son’s recovery from aserious illness in 1737. To the left, a statue of St.Conrad of Parzham, O.F.M. Cap. (1818-1894), thebeloved “Porter” or doorkeeper of the shrine for 40years, also in silver. The replica housed in the Basilica of the NationalShrine is an exact copy of the original. During WorldWar II, the sculptor Josef Neustifter of Eggenfelden(a town close to Altötting) carved a replica to re-place the original, which was hidden for safekeep-ing; after which he carved three more. The loca-tions of these four exact copies are two in Altötting,one in the Vatican, given to Pope John Paul II during

his 1980 visit, and one in Washington, D.C. Likethe Shrine in Altötting, a statue of St. Conrad ofParzham is located to the left of the Oratory. Altötting (ahlt-øting = no English equivalent;mouth is rounded as if to say “o” but say oo) (liter-ally “old ötting”) lies in the beautiful Alpine foot-

hills of Upper Ba-varia, betweenMunich, Passauand Salzburg. Formore than 1,250years, Altötting hasbeen the spiritualcenter of Bavaria,and for over 500years, the most im-portant place of pil-grimage in Germany associated with the Virgin Mary,the patroness of Bavaria. The Gnadenkapelle(Chapel of Mercy), which houses the statue of theBlessed Mother and which is located on theKapellplatz, is the center of the city and the “Na-tional Shrine” of Bavaria. Each year, more than halfa million pilgrims come to this Shrine, at least 30,000of which come by foot. The Gnadenkapelle or Heilige-Kapelle (HolyChapel) located in the center of the square, is a smalloctagonal building constructed of volcanic rock,which dates back to the Carolingian period (7th –8th centuries). Legend states that the missionary-monk of Germany, St. Rupert, baptized Otto theBavarian in this place (circa 680). The Chapel isone of the oldest preserved church constructions ofits kind in Germany. The nave, a later addition tothe original octagon-shaped Kapella, was in exist-ence by 1490. Among its rich contents are old andrichly ornamented candles, a gothic relief of St.Rupert, a silver oil lamp donated by King Ludwig I,two side altars of marble from 1668. Altötting became a Marian Shrine of renown in1489 through two miracles: a 3-year-old child, whohad drowned, was restored to life when his grief-stricken mother placed him on the altar in front ofthe miraculous statue, and a child crushed by a fullyladen farm wagon was completely healed. Thus be-gan the tradition of the Marian Pilgrimage and pil-grims in Germany. The most famous pilgrim ofmodern times to this place was Pope John Paul IIwho visited in 1980. The exterior and interior walls of the chapel, aswell as the sacristy of the adjacent 16th-century Col-legiate Church of Sts. Philip and James are coveredwith offerings of thanks for deliverance from sick-ness and danger. Among them are hundreds ofpainted wood votive tablets, some of them five cen-turies old, which are fine examples of folk and peas-ant art. Since the year 1561, the hearts of all Bavar-ian rulers are buried in heart-shaped containers madeof pure silver in the Chapel of the Virgin, sub umbraMagnae Mariae, i.e., “in the shadow of the greatMary.” The last two hearts placed there were thoseof the Bavarian King Maximilian III (1921) and thatof crown princess Maria Antonia (1954). The gift of the replica of Our Lady of Altötting tothe Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immacu-late Conception is a gesture of solidarity and faithby the German Church. Mary is the patroness of theUnited States even as she is of Bavaria.
