MICA’s commencement combines many familiar graduation traditions with a number of elements unique to the College. Graduating students, faculty, and attending dignitaries wear traditional academic regalia combined with a soft velvet

beret rather than a mortarboard-style cap. Caps and gowns didn’t become a commencement tradition at MICA—which received its original charter as the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts in 1826— until the middle of the twentieth century.

Photographs of Maryland Institute commencement ceremonies held at the Lyric Opera House in the early twentieth century show male graduates in suits arrayed onstage behind the women in white dresses. The first evidence of caps and gowns at commencement is a photograph taken in the Main Building at the graduation of the Class of 1940.

Soft berets became part of MICA’s academic regalia in the mid 1960s. Today, many students and faculty adorn or re-invent their commencement berets and gowns—a practice first mentioned in the College’s newsletter Contact in 1972. This spirit of creativity and informality—which often extends to all aspects of commencement regalia—is a fitting counterweight to the elegance and formality of a ceremony that speaks to the institution’s long history and rich traditions.

miCa’s CommenCement exerCises

The ceremonial march of students from Mount Royal Station to the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall is led by faculty marshals who carry the flags of the United States and the State of Maryland. Students are grouped by department or program of study, and carry departmental banners. A new tradition began in 2000—all graduating students in a program sign a ribbon which is affixed to their departmental banner. Each year’s ribbon is added to those of previous classes. Departmental banners are displayed onstage during the ceremony. Honorees, College administrators, trustees, and faculty enter, taking their places onstage as follows. In the first row are the commencement speaker; recipients of honorary degrees, special and alumni awards, and the presenters of those awards; the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, the Chairman of the Board, and the President of the College. In row two are graduate department directors, undergraduate department chairs, vice presidents, and trustees of the College. In rows three and four are undergraduate department chairs, Distinguished Service Award recipient, and faculty.

Graduating students occupy the lower sections of the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and proceed to the stage when the awarding of degrees begins, grouped by program or department. They return to their seats upon receiving their diplomas.

As each student arrives onstage, his or her name and honors are read by the Dean of Continuing Studies from a card provided by the student. Students are greeted by their department chair or program director, and then by the Vice President and Dean for Student Affairs, who presents a diploma with assistance from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. The President affixes the hood for each recipient of an advanced degree. Graduates are congratulated before leaving the stage by the President and by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost; graduate students are also greeted by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

the meanings oF aCademiC regalia

The modern cap and gown evolved from the apparel worn by monks and students in the Middle Ages, when academic life as we know it began. Academic regalia were a visible sign—in color, pattern, and design—of common discipline and like purpose. The flowing black gown and the elaborate ceremonial hood for those earning advanced college degrees originated in the oldest English-speaking institution of higher learning, Oxford University.

The hood, worn by those who have received advanced degrees, is lined with the official colors of the institution conferring the degree (MICA’s are brown and gold), edged and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the highest degree achieved. For degrees conferred at MICA, these colors are white for Master of Arts in Community Arts and Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters; light blue for Master of Arts in Teaching and Master of Arts in Art Education; and brown for Master of Fine Arts and Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts.

The gown, which covers any dress indicating rank or social standing, is symbolic of democracy in scholarship. The sleeve shape indicates the level of degree held by the wearer, and doctor’s gowns may have velvet facing and sleeve bars or chevrons. The gown’s trim may be black or it may match the degree color on the edging of the hood. The distinctive gown worn by President Fred Lazarus at MICA commencement ceremonies was a gift of the Osaka University of Arts when he received an honorary doctorate from that institution.

The cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Its origins are in ancient Rome, where freed slaves were granted the privilege of wearing a cap.

Sashes added to the gown indicate membership in honor societies.

Items worn or carried by graduating students that are unique to MICA’s commencement include:

• The Leadership Honor Cord (blue and gold), worn by students who have been recognized for outstanding leadership, involvement in, and contributions to the MICA community.

• The Community Arts Partnerships (CAP) Honor Cord (red, yellow, and blue), worn by students who have participated in CAP; the primary colors represent the collaborative and transformative nature and mission of CAP at MICA—as well as the rich diversity of cultures, skills, and goals of participating students and the Baltimore communities in which they work.

• Hand-woven kente stoles from Ghana, symbolic of African American students’ proud heritage and rich culture, incorporate symbols of knowledge and success (the key), wealth and riches (the diamond), leadership, unity, and royalty (the stool).

• Asian silks, precious as gold, symbolize value as an artist. The bamboo printed on the silk is a symbol of the cultures of the Far East. It symbolizes grace, strength, and the ability to bend in the wind and not break. It represents resilience and gentle compliance. It also represents life and youth, hope and joy. It is a universal sign to move forward in life.

• The Art Education Honor Cord (light blue) is worn by students who have been accepted into the five-year BFA/MAT program. These students are committed to a pre-professional program designed to help them transition from artist and student to artist-teacher, one who can construct opportunities for others to make art and engage with it in meaningful ways.
