Mary’s Meanderings
Many thanks to Cindy Williams and Cathy Callaway for their very informative explanation of the guilds service project program. These projects are very important to the area communities as well as keep-ing one of our golds as a guild. Any way you can contribute to this worthy cause will be greatly appre-ciated. Check out the ad in this newsletter from Accuquilt. If you are interested in purchasing one of their ma-chines this is a good time to do so. They have been good to us as a guild. Several years back, they donated a an Accuquilt GO to the quilt show. If you would like some personal feedback on the ma-chine just ask Marie England, our Day Vice-president as she was the lucky winner of the GO. We are approaching the ending day for entries for the quilt show. Remember August 23rd at Haughton Quilters is the last day to register your quilts. Remember your quilt does not have to be finished to be photographed and entered in the show. But it does have to be completed when you turn it in to be hung in the show.
Notice: There was a black cardigan St. John ’s Bay, XL sweater left after the August meetings. Check with the Membership Desk for information.
Happy Quilting,
Mary

Mission Outreach Mission Outreach participants are doing a fantastic job making Love Wrappers of various designs. Also a HUGE thank you to our volunteer long-arm quilters, Sue Chase, Lisa McCurdy, and Jeanna Spilker for quilting Love Wrappers for our group. Some members prefer to make tops but are not overjoyed quilting on home sewing machines. While other members would like to practice certain techniques to master them, such as bindings. Working on Love Wrappers is an excellent way to improve and master your skills. So, our plan is to meet the needs and desires of the participants as best we can. Each can do the part she prefers for any given meeting date. I have several kits made: 3"squares for making Irish Chain style 9-patch blocks, strips of various widths for the "strip quilts", 2.5" strips ready to make a different style strip design that might form 6.5" Rail Fence blocks or you might prefer triangle blocks, etc. Then I have kits with 4.5" x 6.5" cuts to be sewn with two 1.5"x6.5" cuts to create 6.5"square blocks. There are a few orphan block kits and a few "brick" kits (4.5x2.5 cuts). We also expect to have some newly quilted love wrappers ready to practice machine bindings techniques. Oh, we do have a few traditional kits for Love Wrappers or bring one you pick up at RRQ monthly meetings. However, if you want to work on YOUR project, whether it is a start-finish-lovewrapper or your own personal pro-ject (maybe for quilt show or not)..... OF course you are welcome to do that, we want your company and encour-agement to others. (Yes, we have participants of Mission Outreach who do not sew Love Wrappers.) Bring your project and supplies and a friend. JUST COME and join us. Remember we have great lunches together. Meeting dates are August 25-26, September 22-23, October 27-28, and November17-18. I will soon share the 2018 dates. Place: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2565 Airline Drive, Bossier City. Time: 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. each meeting date. Be sure your name is on the email reminder list (if not, contact me, [email protected] ). Cathy Ward 422-3177

QUILT SHOW CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Jackie Pierce We are in the “home stretch” (so to speak) leading up to our quilt show and I hope you are as excited as I am. As I prepare this report, some of the remaining key dates are as follows: Quilt registration at P&C Embroidery on August 16, quilt registration at Haughton Quilters on August 23, quilt check-in at RiverView Hall on September 26 from 9:00-12:00, awards/preview banquet on September 28, quilt show from September 29 through October 1, and quilt return to owners at the October guild meeting. Wow! Things are happening rapidly now and signs in-dicate that everything is under good control. Remember: August 23 is the last date for quilt entry and 12:00 noon on September 26 is the cutoff time to receive quilts for hanging in the show, so please take notice. I was so thrilled to be informed after the afternoon guild meeting that 134 quilts had been registered. Likely, a more quilts were registered at the night meeting and more will be added to the number on August 16 and 23. The quality of work that you produce is beyond belief. We are going to have a great show!!! Be prepared to sign up for the awards/preview banquet. Reservations are $20 per person. Spouses and friends are invited to attend also. See Cindy Williams at the September guild meeting or mail your check to her (clearly indicate your name and that it is for the awards banquet). If you have never attended our awards/preview banquet, you are in for a treat. We get to mix and mingle with fellow quilters, then sit down to a catered meal. After dining, the awards list is read and the celebration begins, reaching a crescendo as the doors open to the show room where all beautiful quilts with their awards ribbons are in place for you to see. So do plan to join us for this fun event. Have you decided where you want to volunteer during the show? There are fun jobs for everyone. The sign-up sheets will be at the September guild meeting, and Sharron Thomas will help you find your places. In fact, you are invited to come spend the day at your show. You can work your scheduled events and then visit around, enjoy the quilts, eat lunch and/or snacks in the hospitality room, meet visitors and get better acquainted with our members. When you turn in your quilts on August 26, we would love for you to remain to help hang the show. We are like a group of busy bees on that morning: receiving quilts, sorting them, staging them at the rows, and then hanging the show. We will have a sandwich lunch for you. With lots of help, the entire show should be hung and ready for the judge to start her duties around 1:00 pm. If you have never seen a show go up, you will be amazed at the speed and efficiency this crew can produce. We will also need a take-down crew after the show closes at 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. As a caveat to your help at this time, volunteers may take their quilts home Sunday night after takedown is completed. Please be sure to tell the volunteers who receive your quilts on September 26 that you are part of the take-down crew and will be taking your quilts home after the show closes, so that they can put an identifying dot on the quilt’s paperwork. In the meantime, let’s finish the quilts that have been registered and look forward to the joy of being a part of Red River Quilters’ “The Great Cover-Up” quilt show!
