+Where was she born:

Mary Reiby was born in Bury, Lancashire, England on the 12th May 1777 and died on the 30th May 1855.

At 17 years she married Thomas Raby.

+Original Occupation

Mary’s original occupation was a convict. Mary opened a new warehouse in 1812, enlarging her fleet with the purchase of two more ships by 1817.

+Family Backround

During there marriage Thomas and Mary lived on a farm with seven children.

Life was difficult when Thomas Reiby died on the 5 April 1811, Mary assumed sole responsibility for the care of seven children and control of numerous business enterprises.

+Crime:

She commited stealing a horse at Staffored on the 21 July 1790. When arrested she was dressed as a boy and went under the name of James Burrow, but at her trial her identity was discovered.

On the 21 July 1790 and sentenced to be transported for seven years to New South Wales as a convict to serve out her sentence in 1791.

Thanks to hard work, Mary Reibey became one of the most successful businesswomen in the Colony. With her new affluence came the hard-earned reward of respectability: Mary was now part of Governor Macquarie's social set.
