Mary Reiby

Mary was born on the 12th of May 1777 in Bury, Lancashire, England. Mary’s parents had both died so she lived with her Grandmother.

Original Occupation

Mary was only 13 when she was transported so she did not really have an occupation then. Mary’s original occupation in New South Wales was a nursery maid. She was also a general merchant, land owner, publican, shipowner and trader.

Family Background

Mary’s parents had both died so she lived with her Grandmother.

In Sydney 1794 Mary married Thomas Reiby , a young Irishman in the service of the East India co, whom she had met in the transport and who had returned to Sydney in Britannia that year.

Thomas fell ill after a trip to India in 1809; his heath never completely recovered. After Thomas’s death Mary was left with seven kids.

Crime

At the age of 13 Mary was convicted of stealing a horse at Stafford on the 21st of July, 1790.

Mary’s Sentence

She was sentenced to be transported for seven years to the colony of New South Wales.

Mary arrived in Sydney in 1792 and was assigned to the househould of Major Francis Grose.

She was important because she owned a lot of land in Tasmania and Sydney. Mary was also the founder of the Sydney Grammer School.
