But Mary was a Catholic.

Some Catholics even thought theyshould kill Elizabeth to make sure that Mary became queen of Englandat once.

Mary’s execution• Elizabeth made Mary a prisoner for 19 years

when she came to England in 1568.• Walsingham became ‘spymaster’ for Elizabeth.

He read notes passed to/from Mary (smuggled in beer barrels) so he could stop plots.

• The Babington plot 1586 was a plan to kill Elizabeth and make Mary Queen. Walsingham saw the letters and stopped it.

• Mary was found guilty. Elizabeth did not sign the death-warrant until 1587.

• Mary was executed at Fotheringhay castle.
