10 Stage Coach Players 2016

In 2007, I was play reading chair forStage Coach and David Belew broughtThe Laramie Project to me as a possibleplay for that coming summer. He noteda possible concern with the language forour theatre group and I agreed that theplay’s language could not be altered. Thescript was a powerfully written pieceabout the aftermath of a murder in acollege town, not too dissimilar toDeKalb. We decided that it may nothave been right for Stage Coach Playersat that time. Over the past severalyears, many theatre friends mentionedthey had read the script and raved abouthow beautiful the script was and thatStage Coach should be doing somethingthis important. In the climate we arenow in - marriage equality being passedon a national level and the push backfrom those unwilling to share the rightsthey have with those they see asdifferent from them. The time felt right. We owe last year’s play readingcommittee and board a huge ‘Thankyou,” for the decision to produce TheLaramie Project.

The fight for LGBTQ rights was quietas far as I knew when I was a kid. In the21st century however, America hasprogressed towards a more enlightenedview of gender identity and therealization that all deserve the samehuman rights any other individual isafforded. The pain – the agony MatthewShephard must have felt as he wasbeaten and tortured simply because hewas a gay man is impossible for most ofus to comprehend and this play is a loudcall to those willing to say, ‘Enough.’ Yetthere are many LGBTQ people whosuffer daily. And sadly, it is still commonfor some to deride or bully those whoare lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender andqueer or questioning. Even to withholdbasic rights given to most Americans arestill denied - often legally - to othersunder the auspice of religiosity. We owelast year’s play reading committee andboard a huge ‘Thank you,” for thedecision to produce The LaramieProject. Thanks,Tim
