Luke 10:38-42As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a

village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"  

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

• Mary was mesmerized by Jesus.• She probably is a person which doesn’t

succumb or lose herself in stressful situations

• Mary did not help her sister.• Women are not taught the law.• For this Mary was actually breaking

custom wherein women should just be helping in the house.

Martha

• Has the heart of a servant

• She wanted to give the best.

• A perfectionist at heart since it seems she wanted everything to be right.

• There was stress and anxiety in her.

• She corrected Jesus"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by

myself? Tell her to help me!"

• Jesus rebuked Martha

• Jesus wasn’t angry. But she needed to tell Martha what she needed to hear.

• For Jesus Mary responded by worship while Martha responded with work.

What Was Martha’s Problem

• Distracted Heart“40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that

had to be made.”

Distractions -> Discouragement -> Self-Pity -. Depression

• Worry Too Much41"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried

and upset about many things,”

About Our Worries

• It is useless“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life”

(Matthew 6:27)

• Bible told us numerous times not to worry

• Worry vs. Concern– Concern involves legitimate threats.– Concern Leads to solving the problem– Concern look to God for answers

Overcoming Worries

• Philippians 4:6-7– “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer

and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

• Be Careful of What We Put in Our Minds– “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble,

whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)

Living Room

• Shows Intimacy with Jesus

• Satan doesn’t want us in the living room and have intimacy with Jesus. Satan deceives– By telling us we don’t deserve Jesus since we

always sin– Satan keeps us so busy and distracts us

How to Have Intimacy with Jesus

• "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” (John 15:1-6)– Quiet TIme– Prayer– Fill Your Days with the Word of God– Maintain a pure heart by confessing our sins regularly

• When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.  "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."

“Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." “Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at

the last day."

“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world." (John 11:20-27)

What is “Better”?• Jesus gives eternal life.“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that

whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

• Man is a sinner. Man always sins“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

• Only by God’s grace are we saved“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from

yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
