The following pages give details of some of the finest Dahlias available. All varieties have been thoroughly tested on the nursery and they can be offered with complete confidence. For our General Terms and conditions please see page 27 and 28.

DAHLIA CLASSIFICATIONThe classification of Dahlias in this catalogue is based on the NDS Classified List 2018, 33rd Edition. Some varieties included in this catalogue are either not yet classified or are no longer included (prefixed U). Where this is the case we have included them in what we believe to be the most appropriate section after trial at the nursery or from historical information.

POT TUBERS AVAILABLE DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY These are compact tubers grown in a 9cm pot and ideal for exhibitors or keen growers who have the facilities (e.g heated greenhouse or propagator) to produce and propagate their own stock. We strongly advise unpacking on arrival and, if necessary, storing in a cool, frost free environment until required for setting away. A minimum of 50°F(10°C) is required for propagation. Water tubers sparingly until growth is evident. Early ordering is advisable. Some varieties already in short supply are only available through our website where tuber availability is updated regularly.SPECIAL NOTE. Any tuber which fails to grow must be returned to us by March 30th. We will then either replace with tubers or mini plants (if available), supply a credit note or refund. No action can be taken unless a tuber is returned.MINI PLANTS AVAILABLE FROM EARLY APRIL TO END OF MAY These are supplied as strong rooted cuttings for those customers who have the facilities for potting up and growing on under glass (minimum 50°F, 10°C). On receipt, they should be unpacked immediately and potted on into a 9-12cm pot using a good quality compost. Be careful to avoid over watering, particularly after potting. No mini plant orders (unless for our special collections or on a substitutes acceptable basis) can be accepted after 20th April. Please see table below for our suggested guide to delivery periods for Mini Plants:

GARDEN READY PLANTS AVAILABLE FOR 2 WEEKS COMMENCING 3RD JUNEThese larger plants, grown in a 7cm paper pot, are “garden ready” after allowing a few days to get over the journey! They are popular with customers who do not have the facilities for growing on, but do however come at an additional cost of £2.00 per plant on top of the mini plant price. Orders must be in the office by the 20th April (unless for our special collections or on a substitutes acceptable basis) as cuttings are taken and plants are grown to order. Please Note we are unable to supply Garden Ready Dahlias to destinations outside of mainland UK.

QUANTITY DISCOUNTS - MINI PLANTSThese only apply when 3 or more of the SAME variety are ordered.

December 2018Dear Friends and Fellow Chrysanthemum and Dahlia Enthusiasts,Another season is over and what a challenging one it has been but already we are well under way in our planning for the next one. Growth is on schedule to take our first batch of Chrysanthemum cuttings early in the New Year whilst most of the Dahlia tubers are set up ready to be started into growth after the Christmas break. In this, the 98th edition of our main catalogue, you will find some of the best varieties of Dahlias and Chrysanthemums currently available, all of which have been grown and trialled on our nursery here in Northumberland. Assessments have been made on other varieties we have grown this year with some already shortlisted for possible inclusion in our 2020 catalogue whilst we are already in receipt of ones for our 2019 trials. The year just gone saw many challenges for growers across the country, whether exhibiting or just growing for the garden. The Beast from the East upset the growth patterns on plants early on whilst the unusually high summer tem-peratures and dry weather caused disruption to timing of blooms for shows and affected the quality. However, it was still very pleasing to see some really good exhibits at both Wisley and Harrogate Shows, where the displays of quality Dahlia blooms never fails to disappoint. Full credit must go to the organisers and volunteers at these shows and all the other smaller shows across the country, without whom there would be nowhere to showcase and exhibit our favourite flowers. A regular part of our calendar is attending Harrogate Flower Show and we were honoured to be once again awarded a Premier Gold Award for our Dahlia exhibit. A lot of effort from a whole team goes into staging an exhibit but it is well worth it as it gives us a great chance to meet so many friends and customers. Towards the end of September, we were privileged to welcome Lady Elsie Robson to the nursery, so she could accept a donation of £1900 towards The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation from Gordon Hodgson and his brother Harold. Gordon’s generosity in donating royalties from the sales of Westerton Ella Grace was very gratefully received by her. We were also able to forward a £1155 donation to the Cornish Air Ambulance from sales of Josudi Neptune and Josudi Aurora. Thank you to all who supported us this with your custom last year, as this helped make the above donations possible, and for the many favourable comments we received throughout the season. One of the rewards we have is knowing that the plants we supply give so much pleasure to so many, whether for showing, growing or the sheer enjoyment they bring to others as they walk past colourful displays in front gardens. We love to hear of your successes and welcome any feedback as it helps keep us on our toes so to speak. We realise many of you grow just for garden display and cut flower but if you are interested in having a go at showing now is the time to think about it and plan ahead. Exhibiting is not all about the big national shows. Starting at grass roots level with your local society show and just taking part can bring its own rewards, with lifetime friendships being made. It is up to our generation to pass on knowledge and skills to the next and the smaller local shows, quite often the annual focal point of a community, are as important now as they ever were if the next generation is to be embold-ened to go on and have a grow! It is important to remember though that these local shows and societies only survive because of the dedication and time given by a small number of people. If you have the skills and enthusiasm to even just help and give them support then this may help reverse the decline of so many local societies that are folding today, not so much due to lack of members but to the lack of people willing to take on the role of office holders and committee members. On that note may I, on behalf of all of us at Halls of Heddon, wish you Happy and Successful growing in 2019.Yours faithfullyDavid W Hall

Collerette Dahlias have flowers with a single outer ring of generally flat petals (ray florets) with a ring of smaller petals (florets) forming a collar. The open centred flowers are hugely attractive to all types of pollinators. These make an excellent addition to any garden, particularly herbaceous borders.

This section includes Star, Orchid, Anemone centred and single flowered Dahlias. The open centred varieties included are excellent for attracting all types of pollinators. Being very free flowering they will provide a wonderful display of colour through summer and well into the autumn. They are becoming increasingly popular because of this.

COLLERETTE, WATERLILY AND BEE and BUTTERFLY COLLECTIONSWe feel that this group of Dahlias is one of the best for using in herbaceous borders and for general planting. The waterlily types make excellent cut flowers whilst the Collerettes are extremely free flowering and are particularly good for attracting butterflies and bees into the garden. Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower. Disbudding of these is only necessary if growing for exhibition or if they are needed for cutting. The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a wide colour range with a label for each variety.

This section includes some very popular exhibition varieties but many varieties make good cut flowers and fit well into borders. Small flowered decoratives usually produce flowers 100-150mm (4-6") across. Miniature flowered decoratives are usually between 50 and 100mm (2-4") across. For exhibition purposes they must not exceed 170mm and 115mm respectively.

POMPON AND BALL DAHLIA COLLECTIONSPompons are dainty flowers that only reach about 50mm (2”) across. Ball dahlias have flowers up to 150mm (6”) across. Both types can be ‘stopped’ when 5-7 pairs of leaves have developed and all the resulting stems allowed to flower. Disbudding is only necessary if growing for exhibition or for cut flowers as this gives longer stems. The following collections are of OUR CHOICE from this catalogue and supplied in a wide colour range with a label for each variety.

Chrysanthemums are supplied as strong rooted cuttings grown in individual cells ready for potting into at least a 9cm pot and are available from February to Mid May. Orders for other than our special collections must be received before March 22nd.

Please indicate clearly on the order form when plants are required bearing in mind that a minimum of 5 weeks notice is required as cuttings are taken to order. We would suggest the following guidelines to help you determine when it is best for you to receive your plants depending on the facilities you have available:

SUGGESTED STOPPING DATESFor those of you that are showing it is important to have an idea of "stopping" dates. To assist exhibitors in timing their blooms we have now included suggested stopping dates for each variety within their descriptions. These dates are intended as a guide only and are based on aiming for show dates of early/mid September and early/mid November in the North East of England. Adjustments should be made for earlier or later shows. Due to longer day length, growers in the south of the country should delay these suggested dates by up to 4 weeks whilst more northerly growers than ourselves would need to stop up to 2 weeks or so earlier. As an extremely rough guide delay stopping by 1 week for every 150 miles south of Newcastle and bring forward by 1 week for every 150 miles further north. If you are not aiming to grow for shows then these stopping dates become much less critical with a delay in stopping only resulting in a corresponding delay in flowering. The serious grower will keep their own records from year to year to assist them in timing for shows. Please Note: Depending on when your order is received and the period you have requested delivery of your order, some of these suggested dates may have been missed. This will not affect the plant, but may result in some varieties flowering later than indicated.

When it comes to late flowering varieties you will see that most have 2 stopping dates suggested. Exhibitors will tend to flower on 2nd crown buds as this gives the plant a longer growing season, a bigger root system and therefore generally better flowers. Perfectly good results when growing for pleasure can however be achieved on later delivered plants by just using the later date given for the 2nd stop.

Blooms have close, firm and tightly formed incurved florets (petals) which should form a perfect globe. These will normally flower in September depending on cultural practices and stopping dates of which a suggested date (for northern growers) is given in brackets. After stopping restrict the number of breaks (stems) on each plant to 3-5 stems.

Blooms have drooping florets (petals) which should reflex gracefully and overlap one another to give a fully reflexed bloom - an umbrella effect. These normally flower in September depending on cultural practices and stopping dates of which a suggested date (for northern growers) is given in brackets. After stopping restrict the number of breaks (stems) on each plant to 3-5 stems.

Fully double with a number of flowers developing on each stem this section includes varieties useful for exhibiting (E), floral arranging and late summer colour in the garden.

Flowering from August to October these are relatively easy to grow and make excellent cut flowers. All varieties require only to be “stopped” (the growing tip pinched out) at about 15-20cms (6-8”) when they are growing strongly and all the resulting growth tied in. Unlike the blooms, no disbudding is required but if you are growing for exhibition only 5 or 6 buds should be allowed to develop at the top of each stem These should be selected for evenness in height, development and spacing with the aim of having as even a head of flowers as possible. We have given each variety a suggested stopping date shown in ( ) for flowering mid-September in the North of England.

As the name suggests the multiple flowers that develop on each stem only have a few rows of florets (petals) and includes varieties useful for exhibiting (E), floral arranging and late summer colour in the garden. Being open centred they attract a wide range of pollinating insects to the garden.

EARLY SINGLE FLOWERED SPRAYS

A more even head of flowers on each stem can be achieved on all Spray varieties by removing the terminal flower bud.

Generally just a few rows of petals surrounding a pin cushion like central disc flowering late August through to October. Good for cutting and floral arrangements as well as being attractive to pollinators.

EARLY ANEMONE CENTRED SPRAYSFlowering naturally from September through to December depending on variety, these are ideal for growing in pots, either 1 plant to a 15cm pot or 3 plants to a 25-40cm pot or at the front of borders, particularly the September flowering varieties. All will benefit from at least one pinching out of the growing tips to produce bushier, more dome shaped plants with more flowers. Later flowering varieties may need some protection though we have had them flowering outside in late November in a sheltered, sunny spot. (22=September flowering, 12=October, November flowering.)

The Rubellum and Korean types listed below are ideal for the herbaceous border bringing an abundance of autumn colour, with some varieties flowering well into the winter! They are also an invaluable late season source of nectar and act as a magnet for Butterflies and Bees. The plants can grow quite bushy so need plenty of space but are often strong enough to support themselves. We have found them to be very hardy surviving outside with no protection and flowering very freely year after year. We are indebted to Judy Barker who holds the National Collection of Koreans, Rubellums and Hardy Sprays for supplying stock of some of these varieties.
