Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, or simply Mary Kom (1983 - ) is
a boxer from the Indian state of Manipur. The 5 time gold medalist in the World Boxing championships is also a mother of two. Mary was previously a track and field athlete but switched to boxing after being inspired by the success of fellow statesperson and boxer Dingko Singh.

Kom was born to a poor Manipuri family
in Kangethei to farmer parents. Although she
was unable to pass her 10th grade board exams,
Kom's determination led her to complete her degree with the National
Institute of Open School. At first Mary hid her interest in boxing from her parents who didn't consider the sport fit for women. A year after starting to train Mary competed at the Womens World Boxing Championship and snagged a silver medal. The next year she moved on to gold and has consistently brought home a medal in almost all the competitions she has entered since.
