REPORT OF THE CULTURAL COMMITTEE
MARUDHAM - THE INTER UNIVERSITY CULTURAL FEST OF
TAMILNADU NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL
The Tamil Nadu National Law School (TNNLS), Trichy, celebrated its first All India
level Inter-University Cultural Fest – “Marudham” 2018 from 02/03/2018 to 04/03/2018.
Marudham’s objective is to have an equitable blend of Tamil Traditional art forms with the
continental genre through various competitions.
Drawing inspirations from Tamil Classics such as Tholkapiyam and Silapadhigaaram,
the dedicated Cultural Committee team of TNNLS, under the guidance of Prof. Balachandran
Sathyan, Faculty In-Charge of Cultural Committee worked out the definition, form, rule and
presentation of every competition as per the Tamil classics. All the Tamil traditional art
competition are given the traditional names from Silapathigaaram and Tholkaapiam, and the
participants were suggested to use natural materials such as animal hide and not
synthetic/fiber with regard to instruments. Marudham aimed to protect the Tamil traditional
art in its pristine form and believe in extending the support to traditional instruments makers
and preserving customary social relations of the society.
“Marudham” was inaugurated by the Tamil Folk Art couple Padmashree
Dr.Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan and Dr.Navaneethakrishnan who are synonymous
with Tamil traditional songs. The couple rendered the Naattupura paadal on the theme of
invention of agriculture and the inimitable role of women in Marudham – the land of fertility
and prosperity.The Music Bird Prof.Mammathu, who also inaugurated the Marudham vizha
narrated the evolution of musical rythms, tunes and ragas in its present forms in various
Tamil society landscape namely Kurinji, Mullai, Marudham, Neidhal and Paalai.
Tamil Film Maker Thiru.Nalan Kumarasamy presented a perspective on the inclusive
protection of our culture and representation of the same in Tamil cinema mentioning
identities do always coexist in our country in his guest of honour address.
The Vice Chancellor Prof. Kamala Sankaran, who is the Patron of Marudham
welcomed all the guests, participants, students, faculties and staffs for the grand fest of
Marudham in the “Little India” Tamil Nadu National law School.
Marudham is the first of its kind in the entire country as all the competitions helped in
the rejuvenation of the youth talent in folk art and art form. But, one cannot miss the

continental genre of the “Marudham” that included competitions such as Great debaters,
Blitzkrieg, Tripping Off The Tongue, Nightingale etc.,
The traditional art form competitions were judged by folk art experts
Prof.Mammathu, Kalaimaamani. Thenmozhi, Kalaisudarmani. Rajendran, Karagam
Professional Mr. Ilavazhagan and Dance master Mr. Satheesh in order to keep up the beat and
professionalism of the event.
The two days event set the tune for the forthcoming Marudham of the next academic
year also. Participants and students identified every time, every song that originates from folk
tradition with the continental music and painted the event with the colours of fertility and
prosperity.
Marudham vizha came to an end to have beginning in its another avatar next
academic year on 04/03/18. The valedictory session was honoured by the popular film maker
Thiru. Ponram. He mentioned in his address that the very word marudham attracted him to be
a part of the festival and narrated his passion to protect the traditional musical instruments
and art forms.The Vice-Chancellor Prof.Kamala Sankaran thanked all the participants,
students, staff and every thankful soul who rendered their support to make this unique event a
history.
Mr. Balachandran Sathyan, the organiser of Marudham, extended his hearty thanks to
all who not only participated but also witnessed this event with enthusiasm to revive the folk
art and art forms.
