Located in Caribbean Fort de France is the capital . Martinique is nicked named the

island of flowers.

Since the establishment of French rule Roman Catholicism has been predominant religion of the country

Bahai, Jewish, and Muslim faiths have also migrated into the country.

The official language of Martinique is French.

French is used for its government, schools, newspapers, and media.

The spoken language is Creole.

About 5 percent of the population in Martinique hail from France.

Only about 2,500 Martinicans on the island are direct descendants of the original French settlers.

Verdean Cola-zouk dance style. The music was developed directly from zouk.

Lambazouk or Lambada is dance style (or a variation of it) danced to Zouk music.

Brazilian Zouk

Brazilian zouk is a Brazilian version of Zouk dancing using French Caribbean, Portuguese Cape Verdean and other Zouk-like rhythmic music.

Mont Pelée In 1902 the volcano erupted It is now dubbed the worst volcanic disaster of

the 20th century. The eruption killed about 30,121 people. Most deaths came from the city of Saint-Pierre

which was at that time the largest city in Martinique.

The eruption left only two survivors One survived because he was in a poorly

ventilated, dungeon-like jail cell. The other lived on the edge of the city, and

escaped with severe burns.

Les Animaux

There are relatively few kinds of animals on the island.

The mongoose was introduced in the 19th century in the hope of eliminating the deadly rat-tailed viper, but the plan failed.

There are also manicons (a kind of opossum), wild rabbits, wild pigeons, turtledoves, and ortolans on the island.

Ortolans small birds that are often netted and fattened as a table delicacy.

Créole cuisine is a delicious mélange of French, African and Indian influences.

Exotic seasonings ignite fresh seafood and poultry in prized recipes handed down from generation to generation.

Local fruits, vegetables and beverages add to the wonderful flavors.
