#3 HYPE | 1-14 may 2013 19 You’ve played some of the world’s biggest clubs. Which ones stand out for you? Stevie: There have been many, but Panorama Bar in Berlin comes to mind. And our residency at DC10 in Ibiza was epic. Who does what when you’re playing a set? Christian: We don’t really have any roles, we just freestyle and kind of play off each other. If one of us is playing the track the other is teeing up the next one. We’re pretty much a two-man band. Do you guys ever get in each other’s way? S: All the time. We kindly ask the other to move. Is there any sibling rivalry over who gets to play the best tracks? S: No, but there is most definitely some rivalry between us on the basketball court - it gets serious. You guys grew up loving percussion. Is it important to your music? C: The rhythmic aspect of our tracks is the most important part. Rhythm is what makes you dance, so it’s important to have those drums tight. What can people expect from a typical Martinez Brothers’ set? S: Energy. We make people dance. If we’re playing you should expect to dance and have a good time. What are a couple of floor-filling tracks that you can always rely on? C: Armand Van Helden’s Ghetto House Groove gets them every time. Also, Transitions by Dennis Ferrer has been slipping back in the playlist. You’ve pulled off some 11-hour sets before. How do you keep going? S: As long as the people keep feeding us energy, we’ll feed it right back. The people create the vibe at a party as much as the DJ does. Do you ever run out of ideas? S: No, because we don’t try to force the music. When it’s something you want to do, rather than something you’re forced to do, you’re bound to come up with something. We play music when we want to, which, luckily, is all the time! Blue Marlin, Ghantoot, Al Jazira Golden Tulip Hotel and Resort, Dubai, free.
