WorshipFaculty, Staff, and Students gather for Chapel on Wednesdays. Other special liturgies and prayer services are held throughout the year.

Chapel services are important in build-ing proper school spirit and character, responsibility, and holistic development. It is the hope that Chapel is both a bless-ing and enhancement to an attendee's spiritual life.

Other worship opportunities and special rememberances are offered throughout the year as part of the Beatitudes Club, a Christian Fellowship club, open to all students.

Looking for a church to call home?Martin Luther School is associated with several area churches. A list of our churches in association is at the right.

In addition, St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Brooklyn meets for worship in the school cafeteria every Sunday at 10:30 am. All are welcome.

TheologyAll students at Martin Luther take cours-es in basic Christian theology and doc-trine. All students, upon the beginning of the school year receive a Bible to study and keep.

Middle School religion classes focus on thematic units focusing on study of the Bible and Scrip-tural application to our everyday lives.

Once students enter High School, theology classes be-come more specific. In 9th Grade, theology focuses on study of the Old Testament while 10th Grade Theology studies the New Testament.

In 11th and 12th Grade, students explore topics in Christian Eth-ics and Comparative Religions.

Our Focus is on God’s Love

For some students, the teachings are brand new; for others, the classes serve to enhance and explore their beliefs deeper. For all, the saving grace of Jesus Christ through His death and resurrec-tion is presented.

Theology classes are held every other day throughout the school year.

FellowshipThroughout the year, the Beatitudes Club hosts events and gatherings for the Mar-tin Luther community. Each event begins with a brief prayer service and continues with a fellowship activity.

H- Honors Course; + Regents Preparatory Course Curriculum; #College/University credit dependent on requirements of college/university; ** College course offered through Concordia College—NY, Monroe Col-

lege, St. John’s University, or St. Joseph’s College

Since its founding in 1960, Martin Luther School has had one mission – to prepare middle and high school students for college while sharing with them the love of Jesus Christ. Now, 55+ years later, our mission is still the same!

MLS is not just a place where students come to learn math and science and his-tory – it’s where young men and women are encouraged to reach their potential and become productive, well-rounded leaders in our society.

We offer a STEM certificate as well as college-credit courses through our partnerships with local colleges, such as Concor-dia, St. Joseph’s and St. John’s. Students entering 9th grade will have the opportunity to earn as many as 36 college credits – at no extra cost! These credits are portable (transfer-able) to most colleges in the United States.

Students can also take Regents classes to earn a Regents di-ploma, which is important when applying to City University of NY (CUNY) and State University of NY (SUNY) schools.

In addition, MLS offers four levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) for students who are not native-English speakers. Students will be placed in ESL and Speaking Labs based on their score on our placement test. The ESL program is also available at no additional cost to the student.

Students at MLS are introduced to world religions and tackle tough subject like morals and ethics each year in Theology classes. Weekly chapel reinforces these lessons, and students have the oppor-

tunity to participate in the services as readers and acolytes.

Our Fine Arts curriculum allows stu-dents to express themselves creatively! Whether singing in the Concert Choir or playing in the Symphonic Band, be-ginners and more advanced students have the opportunity to show off their talents! Students taking Art and Digital Photography also have a creative outlet, working with a variety of mediums, from

paint to charcoals, paper mache to print making!

MLS is proud to have a 98% graduation rate – each year, almost all of our high school seniors continue their educa-tion in college. One or two seniors each year go directly into the armed forces or the Police or Fire Academy.

Clubs & Organizations

The Cougar ChronicleThe Cougar Chronicle is the student-run newspaper. It is published quarterly and fo-cuses on the activities and interests of MLS students. Staff members learn to write for a newspaper and develop desktop publishing techniques to design the publication.

InvictusMartin Luther School’s yearbook, Invictus, is published annually and distributed to the students in the fall. Created using the latest desktop publishing tools, it contains student portraits and candid student-taken photos from throughout the school year. Athletic teams and clubs and organizations are also featured in the book.

Key ClubMLS sponsors a chapter of the Key Club, the school division of Kiwanis International. This organization carries out the motto “We Build” through school and commu-nity service projects. With an emphasis on leadership training, the MLS Key Club has sponsored clothing and food drives, neighborhood clean-up activities, tutoring sessions with elementary school students and elder care at local nursing homes.

Chapel Service CommitteeStudents are invited and encouraged to participate in the planning of weekly Chap-el services. Students assist in the worship, reading Scripture lessons, singing or playing instruments, and acting out skits. Students meet with faculty members to plan the worship schedule for the year.

National Honor Society/National Junior Honor SocietyMLS sponsors chapters of the National Hon-or Society of Secondary Schools and the Natinoal Junior Honor Society.

The purpose of these chapters is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render ser-vice, to promote worthy leadership and to encourage the development of character in all students. Students are selected for membership in the Society by a faculty council, based on academic excellence, good character, service to the school, and indications of positive leadership.

Martin Luther School offers a wealth of extracurricular activities. New clubs can always be formed if there is student interest.

The Director of Student Activities will be happy to work with you to form new clubs.

Drama Club & Troupe 980, International Thespian SocietyThe Drama Club at MLS gives students a chance to experience all aspects of a the-atrical production, from choosing a work to publicizing the event, from designing and building the sets to getting up on stage and performing. Students also contribute to the production by playing in the Pit Band and by working on make-up, costumes and choreography. The group produces at least three productions each year.

German, International & Spanish ClubsThese organizations have been formed to allow students the opportunity to experi-ence firsthand the culture of other countries outside of the classroom and beyond their textbooks.

The students learn various cultural back-grounds, and get the chance to learn more about other nations’ customs and beliefs.

The groups have been known to dine in restaurants serving that country’s food, see movies from that country, take trips to local museums and even travel to that country.

Student CouncilThe Student Council was created as a line of communication to ensure that the faculty and administration of MLS remain cognizant of student life. It is the privilege of the Student Senate to make recommendations to the Principal or Executive Director, based on the suggestions and ideas brought forth by their classmates.

Each class is represented on the Council by their President and Vice President, and they meet under the guidance of the Student Council Advisor.

Students have the opportunity to participate and interact with their teachers and peers outside of the content of the classroom. Activities are offered during the school day during Club Hour on Tuesday morn-ings and after school.

Some of these club activities include:• Art • Badminton• Baking & Cooking• Beatitudes - Christian Fellowship• Board Games• Chemistry & Science• Christ & Culture• College & Career• Crochet & Knitting• Dance• Drama• Fitness• History • Math• National Honor Society• Money & You• Musical Ensembles• News Team• Robotics• Sci-Fi• Sewing• Theatre/Improv.• World Films• And more!

MLS recognizes that education in the fine arts benefits our students. It develops intu-ition, reasoning, imagination, dexterity and awareness into unique forms of expression and communication. We study the fine arts because of the power to change the way we think about ourselves, each other and God.

The Symphonic Band performs at school concerts, graduation and chapel services. It is open to all students who have any level of experience playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument.

Mixed Chorus is a singing group for fresh-men and other students with little singing experience. It emphasizes vocal skills and techniques, music reading, and builds a foundation for advanced musical study. The Chorus performs at school concerts and chapel services.

The Concert Choir is an advanced choir of upperclassmen which performs a variety of popular, sacred and secular music. Ad-vanced singing techniques, singing in four-part harmony, sight singing skills and group vocal production are emphasized in daily rehearsals. The Concert Choir performs in school concerts, graduation and chapel services. This group has also performed at The Bronx Zoo, Disney World, Citifield, The Nassau Coliseum and competed in the World Choir Games.

Music In Our Lives is a one semester gener-al music class which studies the music from a variety of styles, cultures and time periods. Students respond to the music with oral and written presentations and learn the basics of music reading, composition and rhythm.

ConcertsThe Bands and Choirs per-form several concerts each year, both on and off cam-pus. Music, ranging from the classical to popular, is performed to build the cultural awareness and sen-sitivity of students. Self-ex-pression skills, personal confidence, and perfor-mance decorum are all nur-tured by these experiences.

Visual Arts

All students take the required one-semester course, Art I, which introduces the student to creating art, and provides training in basic art skills, such as figure drawing, color theory, painting, and drawing techniques. Art History is incorpo-rated into the introduction of each lesson.

After Art I, students may choose to continue exploring art through four one-semester courses:

Art II Combines fine art and craft projects and is designed for students who are interested in increasing art skills or art as a hobby.

Major ArtIntroduces students to the major Fine Art areas of drawing, paint-ing, printmaking, watercolor and sculpture.

PhotographyAllows students to experience both traditional black & white photog-raphy and digital imaging through Photoshop. Students learn basic skills of composition, film and print development, and darkroom tech-niques, as well as creating a digital photo, colorizing, scanning and photo montage.

Studio ArtSerious students enroll in this in-dependent study course, designed to help students create work for a college portfolio. This advanced level class focuses on exposure to a wide variety of drawing maerials and subject matter, such as still life, landscapes, perspective and human figure.

In all courses, grading is based on completion of the requirements, effort, creativity, and each stu-dent’s ability.

Fine Arts, Music & Drama

Theater ArtsThe Theater Arts program at MLS is an im-portant part of the educational experience. It offers increased awareness and sensitivity to the world around us and an increased ability to deal effectively and productively with that world and its people.

Theater includes actors, singers, and danc-ers on stage as well as scene painters, set builders, and costume makers. Involved also are the directors, technical crew and stage hands. Students in theater learn a wide variety of lifetime skills from carpentry to public speaking.

MLS believes that theater is a serious dis-cipline. The program functions as a living laboratory where students explore their cre-ative capabilities and to find constructive, disciplined ways to express themselves.

A member of the International Thespian Society, Martin Luther’s Thespian Troupe 980 produces at least three shows each year as well as a drama showcase and awards banquet.

The Fall production is typically a drama or comedy. Past shows have included The Odd Couple, Arsenic and Old Lace, and The Taming of the Shrew.

In the Winter, the students take a production out on the road to local elementary schools. Past shows have included You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Hansel and Gretel, and Christ in the Concrete City.

The Spring production is typically a Broad-way style show. Past productions include The Wiz, Cinderella, The Music Man, Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, Grease, and Godspell.

Cougar Athletics

Physical EducationIn order to graduate from Martin Luther School and receive an academic diploma, students are required to complete 2 units of Physical Education.

To meet this State requirement, students are assigned to a gym class that meets every other day, throughout the school year.

Intra-Scholastic CompetitionMLS also offers young student-athletes three seasons in which to compete in Intra-Scholastic sports.

MLS is a charter member of the Private Schools Athletic Association (PSAA) and a member of the Independent Private & Parochial Schools Athletic League and the New York State Association of Inde-pendent Schools. Our teams compete in many local and regional games and tournaments against private PSAL and Catholic School Athletic Association schools.

All Athletic teams and events are gov-erned by regulations formulated by the New York State Association of Indepen-dent Schools. This ensures standardized and fair competition throughout.

Intramural CompetitionMartin Luther’s Athletic Department gives students the opportunity to participate in Intramural tournaments against their classmates, other classes and even the faculty and staff! These popular events include basketball, volleyball, soccer and floor hockey competitions.

Physical ExamsPrior to participating in practice or com-petition, a student must have a physical examination, certifying in writing that he/she is able to fully participate in the desired sport. Under no circumstances will a student be allowed to participate without a physician’s written consent.

Practice SchedulesTeam practice sessions are determined by the individual coaches and are usu-ally held after classes each school day. At times, practices are also scheduled for Saturdays or during vacation periods. While at practice, students are under the supervision of the coaching staff.

Academic EligibilityAthletes must maintain a grade point average of 70 to remain a team member in good standing.

Martin Luther School has created a legendary Athletic program. Our students compete against other schools in the Private Schools Athletic Association

as well as against each other in our Intramural program.

Our Faculty

“The faculty at Martin Luther School really made a difference in my life. My teachers knew me by name and really cared about what happened in my life - both in and out of the classroom.”

-Paul Stamler, Class of 1978

What was true almost 40 years ago is still true today. The faculty of MLS truly cares about their students - and giving those students the best possible education.

Students at Martin Luther School are more than just a number. They are a Child of God, and each one is a gift. Faculty and staff strive to nurture our students, encourage them and challenge them to become leaders of tomorrow!

Teachers at MLS will stay after school, or even come in early, to help students or just to listen when a student is faced with a problem. Our teachers real-ize that their ministry extends beyond the classroom walls. Faculty Office Hours are posted each semester, and both students and parents are encouraged to take advantage of this one-on-one time with teachers.

Faculty also staff the Homework Room each day after school, giving students the opportunity to complete their assignments with a teacher on hand for assistance or guidance.

Martin Luther School offers Academic Lab, built into the daily schedule, to assist students of various learning abilities.

SAT Prep is also built into the schedule for high school Juniors and Seniors.

Faced with the ever-changing technology available to our students, faculty members have adjusted their teaching styles and lesson plans to keep our students ahead of the curve. This means learning new computer programs, such as PowerPoint, to create visually stimulating as well as mentally challenging lessons.

In response to this need for faculty continuing education, the MLS Teachers Schol-arship Fund was established as an endowment that will provide annual revenue to fund projects proposed by the teachers. Projects to be considered for funding include in-service programs, conference attendance and workshops.

A steering committee of teachers reviews proposals and recommend funds to be distributed.
