I would also like to take a mo-

For a very long time, there

has been an increased

awareness of the positive,

constructive interactions

between Black male role-

models and Black boys. The

lack of fathers in the home

and the negativity associ-

ated with broken families

and "dead-beat dads", has

been center stage in the

Black community.

While our attention on the

cannot forget about the

strong influences Black fa-

thers have on their pre-teen

Our Family trees are not the same,

we both have a different mother

And yet I'd proudly tell the world

that this man is my Brother.

It's like we've lived our lives together,

though we meet for the first time

As this powerful sense of Brotherhood

makes everything seem fine.

Spectators stand and look with awe

as we do our secret shake,

Never realizing that this clasping of hands

does not a Brother make.

We are Brothers in a deeper sense

than they can comprehend,

For when our bond has just begun,

theirs are about to end.

When we were searching for the light,

as all Sphinxmen must do,

They stood aside and laughed out loud,

"I wouldn't do that! Would You?

and yet when we had crossed those sands

and the light we could finally see,

They stood aside and whispered softly,

"Oh how I wish it were me!"

I know the decision I made was wise,

of this I'm sure and have no doubt

Each day in my life will have blue skies,

for I'm an Alpha from here on out.

And never again will I be lonely

for I have Brothers everywhere,

In cities of population two,

I even have a Brother there.

There is nothing in this whole wide world

that we wouldn't do for one another

I'm sure I'd even give my life

to save that of my Brother.

But there are still those in darkness

who cannot understand

Why I would share the burden

which belongs to another man.

When asked,

"Why weigh yourself down with the load of another?"

I simply smile at them and say,

"He ain't heavy...he's my Brother!"

FALL GRADE REPORT

THE GOAL THAT WAS BIG ON PAST PRESIDENT, Josh Wilson’s

agenda was raising the chapter gpa and I must say that

the brothers put in the work to do so. With an active ros-

ter of 9 brothers, tau psi did extremely well: The brothers

received a chapter semester average of a 3.03/4.0 scale and

a chapter cumulative of a 2.84/4.0 scale.. I am extremely

proud of these young brothers and I hope to see a contin-

ual rise in gpa and programming.

The Bible tells us in Habak-

kuk 2:2, Write the vision,

and make it plain upon

tables, that he may run

that reads it. For about 5

years, Angel Taylor Carter

and Elveta Taylor Coo-

per had began the process

of writing their vision.

It was their dream to give

back to the community in

which they grew up. They

wanted to provide programs

for youth outside of church

and school that would assist

in developing them socially

and educationally. They

also wanted to provide pro-

grams for seniors that

would allow them the op-

portunity to help each other

as well as the generations to

come. They want

their programs to benefit

the communities of Carroll

and surrounding TN coun-

ties.

On January 12, 2006, the

process of making a dream

become a reality took

place. Taylor & Taylor

Family Resource Center

(TTFRC) was founded and

our Mission: To positively

impact the lives of indi-

viduals and families by

providing services, infor-

mation and training that

will empower and educate

the community; was born.

So we welcome you to

TTFRC!

Brother Anthony Prewitt and

Participants then ate in one of

the five categories: PIZZA,

Golden Girl Spotlight is a way to give recognition to young

women who go above and beyond to do something extraor-

dinary on this campus or in their community. In this current

issue of the Rose of Alpha, the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha

Fraternity, Incorporated would like to acknowledge Miss

Erika Pugh for being one of the only minorities in the Uni-

versity Scholars program here at the University. We are

praying for you sister and wish you nothing but continued

success in your college career! Congrats!

The professional nomenclature has now be-

come household words. Children as young as

six can now speak of "Ritalin," and "ADHD"

with stunning efficiency of what these words

mean. Teachers and principals are telling sin-

gle-parent mothers that their sons need

"CYCLERT" and "ADDERALL." Special educa-

tion children are telling their instructors that

they cannot be suspended from school for

more than ten days because they have an

"IEP." Teenage boys are blaming their behavior

on "I didn't have my pill today."

As soon as children begin to show signs of a

learning challenge parents are racing off to

the schools begging for psycho-educational

evaluations believing that their children have

"learning disabilities" although they have just

began to learn. Collectively, we have created a

monster that is wreaking havoc upon Black

boys in America the explication of which is

central towards a correct understanding of the

underachievement and socio-economic mar-

ginalization of Black men in the United States.

The Umar Abdullah-Johnson Theory of Black

Male Alienation posits that a five-stage cycle

of institutional repression exists that has ef-

fectively sent more black men to jail than it

has to college. Any attempt to reverse this war

against America's most misunderstood popu-

lation begins with a firm analysis of the proc-

ess and it's origins in boyhood. Americans,

including Blacks, have become so desensi-

tized to the pain of Black boys and so expec-

tant of their failures that their pain is often

overlooked and their achievements treated

like occasional glitches in a system that has

successfully made Black boys a permanent

underclass in this country.

The five stages of the Abdullah-

Johnson theory of Black Male Alien-

ation are 1) Miseducation, 2) Psy-

chotropic Medication, 3) Mass Incar-

ceration, 4) Frustration/Irritation,

and 5) Extermination. It is the job of

all Black institutions, parents,

elected officials, clergymen and lead-

ers to fight to keep our young men

from falling into any of these afore-

mentioned stages. Nearly every

Black man in America has already

been through one of these stages or

is at-risk for being sucked into one at

this very minute. This brief article

cannot properly address the histori-

cal underpinnings of each stage in

this vicious cycle but rather it seeks

to draw everyone's attention to

seven (7) facts regarding life as a

Black boy in America.

FACT #1: Black boys are turned off

from public education based upon

the treatment they receive by a pri-

marily White female teacher popula-

tion beginning in kindergarten and

intensifying by middle school.

FACT #2: Black boys are referred for

learning disability and special educa-

tion support programs intentionally

to remove them from the general

student population due to routine

behavior problems thusly preparing

them for a life of marginalization and

prison.

FACT #3: Black boys are sent to de-

"He's just my baby-daddy," a common phrase made

popular in a southern hip-hop song almost defines

the role single fathers have been reduced to in to-

day's loose family structure. While Alec Baldwin and

Bobby Brown have high-powered attorneys repre-

senting them in family court hearings, for the aver-

age father, navigating through the legal maze is

draining emotionally, physically, and financially.

Attorney/author, Alicia M. Crowe's, new book, Real

Dads Stand Up! (Blue Peacock Press, ISBN 0-

9764772-0-3, Paperback $19.95) is an easy to read

230-page step-by step guide that offers tips and le-

gal insights that every single father should know

about child support, parental rights, and custody

including:

How to avoid the baby mama drama

How to navigate through the child support sys-

tem

Seeking custody and enforcing visitation rights

Avoiding the pitfall of child support enforcement

(incarceration/garnishment of wages)

How to gain and maintain access to your children

without going to trial"Real Dads Stand Up! was writ-

ten to give single fathers a greater understanding of

their rights under the legal system," explains Crowe

who has represented fathers and mothers in family

court cases for over a decade. She discovered that

there are many men who wants to play a more active

role in their childrens' lives, but are denied the op-

portunity, either by the other parent and/or the legal

system.

"As a result of the way the system is structured, fa-

thers face an uphill battle just to have minimal con-

tact with their children. The legal system seems to

emphasize child support over a father's right to co-

parent his children," Crowe explains. "I created this

book as a way to inform, inspire, empower, and chal-

lenge fathers to step up to the plate and become

active, responsible, and nurturing adults in their chil-

dren's lives."

After reading this easy to follow guide,

fathers will no longer be intimidated by

the legal process.

Currently a Deputy Town Attorney in the

Town of Ramapo, Alicia Crowe, Esq. is a

partner in the law firm of Crowe &

Crowe with her identical twin sister, Al-

ice T. Crowe. She holds a B.A. Degree in

Political Science from Adelphi University

and a J.D. Degree from Howard Univer-

sity School of Law.

Crowe is a sought after legal expert on

the topic and has been featured several

times as a guest on BET J's "My Two

Cents", Rev. Al Sharpton's "Sharp Talk,"

Resident Assistant at Austin Peay,

Ellington, and Browning Hall, Sec of

Minority Affairs of the Student Gov-

ernment Association, Student Repre-

sentative of SGA, Black Student

Association President Executive

Assistant, BSA President, National

Pan-Hellenic Council Representa-

tive, and he became a member of the

Nation of Islam serving in the capac-

ity of a student minister. Bro. Earl

Mabry was instrumental in imple-

menting the Adopt-a-Family pro-

gram of the Mu Beta chapter and

represented the college chapter in

several district oratorical contests.

Upon graduating from UTM, he pur-

sued a law degree at the University

of Memphis. However, during his

first year of law school, he had a

career change from the legal field to

the IT industry prompting him to

leave Memphis and get his Master’s

in Information Systems from DePaul

University in Chicago, IL.

Bro. Mabry established himself in

the technology industry in Chicago,

specializing in network infrastructure

architecture and network perimeter

security design. This career path

allowed him to serve as a network

engineer for various Fortune 500

companies such as Accenture, Astra

Zeneca, Publicis Groupe, and Ex-

elon. Consequentially, he also be-

came an adjunct faculty member

teaching computer network system

classes previously at Colorado Tech-

nical University and currently at ITT

Technical Institute. In addition to

teaching as a part-time instructor,

Bro. Mabry is a member of BDPA

(Black Data Processing Association)

volunteering his time teaching con-

tinuing educational classes for IT

professionals in Linux, cyber secu-

rity, and Cisco routers. Furthermore,

he is an advisor on Science and

Technology for the Nation of Islam.

However, his greatest accomplish-

ment was celebrating his first year

anniversary with his beautiful wife

Bronda, whom he married on July

4th, 2010.

The Taylor & Taylor Non-Profit Organization based out of

Trezevant, TN partnered up with UPS, Bro. Anthony Prewitt,

and Sis. Alicia Jackson to provide toys and clothing to ap-

proximately 30 families this Christmas. Volunteers meet at

the old church on Wingo Circle and selected and bagged

gifts according to needs and wants. I would personally like

to say that Taylor and Taylor are truly God-Sends to this

community. They commit themselves every month to come

back to the place that they were raised and make an impact

in their community. Please enjoy the pictures below from

For the 5th year in a row,

Brother Anthony Prewitt

teamed up with the Beta

Upsilon Lambda Chapter of

Alpha Phi Alpha and the Beta

Pi Chapter at Lane College to

give children with mental

disabilities a Christmas,. The

Beta Upsilon Lambda Chap-

ter provided the gifts, Beta Pi

provided the Pizza, and

Brother Prewitt provided

food. Due to recent threats in

cutting state funding, we

honestly were not sure that this

event was going to be a reality,

but due to the diligence of broth-

ers like Marvin Thompson and

Quinco Mental Health, we have

another year under our belt.

Outside of free gifts and food,

the children interacted and

talked to the brothers of Alpha

Phi Alpha and we had a dodge-

ball WAR that was out of this

world. Afterwards, the brothers

of beta Pi set out a step.

December 4, 2010 saw the

brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha

from all over celebrating 104

years of fraternal bliss. Since

the brothers of the Tau Psi

Chapter had nothing

planned, I, along with brother

Corey Brooks decided to go

down to Jackson, TN to cele-

brate with the brothers of

Beta Pi and Beta Upsilon

Lambda Chapters. The spirit

of brotherhood was very high.

We had a processional, fol-

lowed by a candlelight vigil

and releasing of balloons.

Afterwards the brothers went

and supported Brother Ryan

Spann of Beta Pi as he got

married and we had our own

personal founder’s day gath-

ering at my apartment back

in Martin. In case I didn’t tell

you all, HAPPY FOUNDER”S

DAY AND MAY THERE BE

MANY MORE!

FACT #3: Black boys are sent to detention centers and

juvenile delinquent programs which interrupts their

schooling and encourages school drop-out especially in

states where returning to public school after such a

placement is illegal.

FACT #4: Prisons are being used as concentration

camps for Black men to be detained since the society-at

-large is not interested in hiring these men by equipping

them with decent livable wage jobs.

FACT #5: American society is more responsible than any

Black man for the destabilization of the Black family by

stealing fathers away from sons and thusly removing

role models and over-burdening Black women with the

dual role of both working for and raising their children

without any paternal assistance.

FACT #6: The war on drugs has been a war on Black

men and has served to destroy the Black community

and strip it of its most valuable resource, its men.

FACT #7: Black boys are more likely to be put on dan-

gerous psychiatric medications for emotional problems

while White boys are more likely to receive valuable psy-

chotherapy for the causes of their behavior problems,

which come with no side effects.

This information has been written to serve as a warning

to the Black community, and all of America, to stop insti-

tutionalizing and brain drugging our sons. They are nor-

mal children and can be successful like other youth,

and will respond to love and proper treatment like any-

one else.

To this end, I am offering free psycho-educational work-

shops for parents and community organizations to train

them on how to protect their sons from premature and

unnecessary labeling, drugging and illegal discipline

practices that take place everyday in our public and

charter schools. The training will highlight five areas of practice:

a) special education law and procedure, b) school discipline law

and procedure, c) disruptive behavior disorders and psychiatric

medicine, d) effective behavioral modification strategies for Black

boys and e) the history of Black boys in public education.

psychological and social development of a teenage girl. What girls

see and hear can play an important role in how they respond and

react to men as they get older.

For instance, girls who are exposed to different men when their

mother's date frequently, are much more likely to over-experiment

with dating themselves. Girls who observe physical or emotional

abuse towards their mothers, are more likely to allow similar be-

havior in their future relationships.

Also, girls whose fathers leave the home early in their lives have

the highest rates of both early sexual activity and adolescent

pregnancy.

These results are indicative of behavioral patterns associated

with absent or irresponsible Black men, and can be explained in a

number of ways. The lack of a stable father-figure results in a

daughter having greater exposure to her mothers' dating, which

may encourage early sexual behavior if the daughter associates

male-attention with happiness.

Another explanation is that girls who live without fathers may un-

dergo early personality changes that steer them towards prema-

ture and unstable relationships with men. This often affects self-

esteem and self-worth, both of which are tarnished when girls are

later exposed to men who ridicule and chastise them.

Negative adult male behavior witnessed by a teenage girl can

adversely affect how she reacts to dating, social pressures, sex-

ual propositions, and future male/female relationships. It has

long been noted that daughters observe and follow their mothers,

but are more influenced by their fathers, or other male authority

figures.
