 Dear Editor,

I note with interest the letter from Mr. Ching

regarding the use of “the large acreage of maize”

being used for Biogassing. As Mr. Ching may be aware

this is a very controversial use of agricultural land.

Using journalistic licence this could be headed “heat

or eat”. The United Nations has already estimated

that the use of agricultural land for bio-fuel cropping

has caused food prices to rise an estimated 3-30%,depending on source and food type, and in 2011 has

estimated an increase of 21% in corn prices alone. The

practice is on the increase, as our Marsham

correspondent notes, and this hidden price increase

will continue. There is already tension in the

agricultural world regarding animal-feed cropping,

versus straight food production, and now this extra

use of land, which is totally out of the food chain is

squeezing the situation further. Scientists are nowlooking at more sustainable bio-fuel sources and are

researching algae and seaweed as well as fungi, as

energy producers. Interestingly The EU is the biggest

producer of Bio-fuels, followed by a growing

production in The USA. Sometime in the future the

whole issue will have to be debated, and probably

regulated.

In October we welcomed 16 members from Erpingham and Calthorpe WI to our joint meeting in the

Village Hall here in Marsham. Our speaker for the evening was Molly Housego who talked about “TheCostumes of Anne Boleyn” and she arrived dressed in the style that Anne may have worn. She spoke

about the daily life of the Boleyn family, their social life and of Anne growing up, her marriage to King

Henry VIII and her eventual execution. Anne was born at the beginning of the 16th century, probably at

Blickling. Married in 1533, she was Henry’s second wife. However, he had her beheaded in 1536. It is

thought that the reason for her execution was her inability to produce a son and heir, but her daughter

eventually became Queen Elizabeth I. Molly ended her talk by describing to us the relevance of the

different layers of the costume she was wearing.

We now look forward to our meeting in December when we will be going to The Marsham Arms for our

Christmas meal.

Our programme for 2014 has now been prepared with our first meeting being on Wednesday 22nd January,

so if you are a woman interested in joining Marsham WI please come along then. Meetings are usually

held on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall at 7.30pm, new members will be very

welcome. There is a WI board on the wall at the right of the Village Hall kitchen where you can see

details of our activities.

Best wishes for a happy, safe and healthy festive season!

Support Your Local Cinema

The village hall management committee have been showing films on a big screen in the hall since 2007. They have

shown over 30 films in that time and while audiences have always fluctuated they have been at an all time low this

year. While afternoon performances have built a growing and loyal audience, the evenings have unfortunately been

attended by dwindling numbers. The production is very high quality using the latest technology. However good yourTV equipment is at home it is not possible to create the atmosphere of watching a film on such a large screen. Please

support your local cinema or it might disappear forever. See What’s On for news of the next film.
