Culver Military Academy Swimmers Prepare For Swimming Season
Coaen "Wally" Walaitis and assistant Bill Roth talk with five record holders and team co-captains during- a Culver practice. They are, first row from top,
•Bob, King:, Rick Richmond, co-captains Joe Cummings and Mike Schneider; second row Mark Krone and Steve Swale.
Versatility from 14 returning lettermen, five of them record holders, should keep Culver Military Academy's swimming opponents guessing in its 12 meets and at the South Bend John Adams Relays.
Culver's coaches plan to use the element of sunrise from their backlog of experience. Although thy admit a need for a buildup in depth in the freestyle, backstroke and brenptmke events, they are optimicstic that the team can improve on last year's 8-3 record from the opening meet at home Nov. 30 against West Lafayette.
VJeteran Academy coach Frank W. Walaitis will be assisted this

year by alumnus swimmer William G. Roth who broke a few records himself at Culver. They assigned six seniors, a junior and two sophomores as the leaders of this year's lineup.
Senior co-captain Joe Cumi-mings, Sabina, Ohio, also leads one of the 80-man infantry companies on campus. Expected to be the mainstay of the varsity, he will swim the 200 and 400-yard freestyle events and perhaps the freestyle relay. He holds the 400 free record at 4:35.8.
Co-captain Mike Schneider, a senior from Elraira, N.Y., is also a company commander. He will compete in the 100-yard butterfly, individual medley and the relays. Another senior' from Eli-mira, Hiram Smith, is expected to be valuable in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.
Although Bob King, a senior from Cocoa Beach, Fla., is referred to as a. "master' of all strokes," the coaches think he will excel in the individual medley, 100-yard breastroke and butterfly, and the 200-yard freestyle. An academic leader' in his class, King also owns the 100-yard butterfly record of 1:00.9.
Mark Krone, a senior from Spencerville, Ohio, is expected to continue to break Academy records in the freestyle sprints as he did last year. His success is needed if the team is to fill the gaps in the sprints left by last year's captain Bill Brown. Krone's brother, Paul, is a sophomore letter-man in diving. He is expected to lead the team's underclassmen.
Coach Walaitis said that although Steve Swale, a junior from Prairie Village, Kan., is probably a diver at heart, he is destined to be one of the best

backstrokers he has seen at the Academy. He currently shares the 100-yard backstroke record of 1:00.3.
Glenn (Rich) Richmond, a junior from Aurora, 111., impresses Coach Roth as "everything a Culver athlete should be. He has tremendous desire to win, and, quite obviously, is accustomed to it. He will probably swim in each event some time this season."
Richmond currently holds three varsity records. His u.pe ialties are the breastroke a n i the individual meulcy. Last year's letter winners eonsiacied Richmond to have made the greatest contribution to swimming and elected him to receive the Tyson Cup. As a sophomore lie also received the first Swim.mug Hall of Fame medal whicu will be given to outstanum^ un .erclass swimmers across the nation this year.
Another sophomore hopeful, Roger Benson, came to Culver this year from EL.iii Academy in Illinois. He has already distinguished himself in p.actice, and the coaches l ook forward to his winning wa.> a in the individual medley, breasiroice and 200-yard freestyle during the season.

Christ, but st i l l , in their young minds Santa Claus and his phase of Chritmas w i l l reign high from now un t i l the cherished moment on Christmas day when the gifts are opened under the tree.
This fact, whether we like i t or not, is the product of our own way of l iv ing and bringing up the children. This phase of Christmas is part ial ly a product of the f i rs t phase wi th the continued push aimed at the young for their acceptance and choice of gifts. However, more and more of this also comes from the "diffrent" way of life now over years ago. W i t h the Christmas season getting longer each year, and the commercial aspect, i t cannot be blammed on the home life as much as the business life.
The th i rd phase of Christmas is the oldest . . . almost 2000 years old. This is the real reason for Christmas. Christ's b i r th . I t was at this time that the gif t giving was started as three kings so-honored a new born babe who was given to the people of the world for their salvation. The religious story of Christmas is known by all , and simple as i t may be, is the most beautiful story ever told.
The important part of this phase of Christmas is that we all remember i t . Not just Christmas eve or in the Christmas programs and services of the respective churches, but al l through the Christmas season.
Christmas is coming. I t is coming in al l three of the phases. A l l three are an established part of our lives, and Christmas cannot be the Christmas we know without al l three. There is time for al l three, but be sure you take time for al l as one w i t h out the other means you are missing part of the dearest time of the year.

* Sooner or later, that day comes, the day when a woman feels she's changing. It's not a good feeling either. A n d she could use a good old-fashioned medicine then.
Could be you feel a little edgy, or maybe cross. You might even have what we call hot flashes and feel sad and slightly off-balance.
Whatever you feel, we have something for the day you need a little comforting. Lydia E . Pinkham Tablets. They're made with gentle, natural ingredients that work to give you a better sense of well-being.
With an old-fashioned problem like this, couldn't you take an old-fashioned medicine?

"J have come as light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness."
— John 12:46
We cannot expect to see God in this world. We cannot take an empty bag to church and return with a supply of faith to carry us through the following week.
Yet happiness and strength for living begin with the simple b e l i e f in G o d and are nourished in the practice of Christianity.
; It is not necessary to walk always in darkness. But we
'must open our eyes to see; and, we must open our hearts to believe.

We're sorry we had to omit some of the news itmes this w e e l L as the balance between ailvertis-r* ing and news items just wasn't present. However, all the news of coining events has been included and all the news we have omitted will lie published next week.
Thank you for your tine re-, spouse in our first few very trying weeks and also for your continued support of supplying news. With your continued support and our getting over the rough spots we f o o l we can make "The Citizen" grow and give to you a good "newsy" hometown paper.
