Is a Day Really a Day?David South

Genesis chapter 1 describes the creation of our world. This account maintains thatGod created the earth and every living thing in it in six days. (These six days of creation arementioned again in Exodus 20:11 and Exodus 31:17). There has erupted a fierce debate overwhether the six days are six literal days or whether they are representative of longer periodsof time.

The cause of this question is the apparent age of the earth. Scientists and geologistshave presented many confusing and complex arguments claiming a great age for the earth. In the face of these arguments, many Bible-believing people feel the need to reconcile thesix days of creation with the apparent old age of the earth. To do this, some argue for afigurative meaning of the Hebrew word yom, “day.” (Much like the English word “day”can be used in a figurative way – e.g., “Back in my day...”). The argument is that this wordcan then perhaps refer to long periods of time as well as to 24-hour days. This would be oneway to fit millions or billions of years into the six “days” of Genesis 1. (Each “day” wouldbe an eon instead of a literal day). In this way, one can accept scientific theories and theBible.

All this debate need not take place. The pressure to make the Bible fit scientificdiscovery need not be felt. The facts do seem to be that there are phenomena in the earthwhich point to long periods of time for development. However, this does not necessitatefinding room for long periods of time in the biblical account of creation. There is a verysimple solution (so simple that many “educated” people will no doubt reject it). Accordingto the biblical account, God created man full grown. If God could create man full grown,He could also create the earth full grown. That is, it is possible in six literal days for God tocreate an earth with full grown mountains (and some in the process of developing), with fullgrown silt deposits in rivers and oceans (with some development still occurring), with fullgrown plants and animals (each of which reproduce after its kind), and full grown humans(who reproduce after their kind).

Although there are ongoing phenomena in geology and biology, those phenomenadid not have to start at ground zero. Adam did not start as a baby. The first mountain didnot start out of a flat earth. The first silt deposit was not laid on solid rock. The earth wascreated with these things full grown and natural processes (set up by God) took over fromthat starting point. Yes, it takes many years for mountains to form and for silt deposits tobuild up, but that does not mean they had to start from scratch. There is no solid reason forassigning anything other than 24 hours to the “day” (yom) of Genesis 1 (and Exodus 20:11and 31:17). If it is possible (and it is) for God to create a full grown earth in six literal 24-hour days, why should we concern ourselves with trying to make those days into somethingelse? Why can we not simply accept what the Bible says?

The winner was a four year old child whose next doorneighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recentlylost his wife.
