• Purpose – ascertain, co-ordinate and express the views of the community which it represents and to take such actions in the interests of that community as is expedient and practicable

• Non-party-political, non-sectarian in discussions and decision making!

The “Scheme” and other documents

• The Scheme sets the parameters for the existence and operation of community councils in a local authority area.

• Each CC also needs a constitution which complies with the scheme conditions. Scheme takes precedence

• Community Council Handbook provides guidance on how to operate

Be a Happy Community Council – Know, understand and follow the rules

• If you know, understand and follow the important documents and particularly the Scheme you will operate smoothly and stay out of trouble!

• You will have publicly available agendas and minutes. You will hold properly organised and timely elections

• You will listen to and consider fairly the diverse and different community interests
