Marmalade

Marmalade is a baked bean cat. I bet you've never met a baked bean cat before. If you have, it

was probably Marmalade, because as far as I know, he's the only one in the whole wide World.

Marmalade is a very fussy cat. All he ever eat is ... baked beans. Baked beans for breakfast,

lunch, supper and brunch - in fact, I don't think that Marmalade has even tasted anythin else

e!cept for baked beans - ever" #ne more thin, Marmalade is probably the la$iest cat in the

World too. %e's so la$y that sometimes, he won't even et out of bed"

Marmalade lives in a very rand house -  purr fect for a baked bean cat. &here is baked bean

wallpaper in every room that matches nicely with a lovely baked bean pattern carpet on it. &he

lamp in his sittin room is the shape of a baked bean, and the table is too. %is lovely, soft and

comfy sofa is also the shape of the biest baked bean in the World, in fact. In his bedroom,

there is baked beans uilt and his bed is the shape of a hue, massive, enormous ... baked

bean can. (o matter where you o in Marmalade's house - baked beans are everywhere.

#ne mornin, at the end of autumn, Marmalade la$ily ot out of bed, with the biest,

loudest, widest yawn. %e put on his warm baked beans slippers and draed himself towards

the window. %e drew back his baked bean curtains and smiled contentedly to see the snow had

landed in his arden overniht. )*ood,) he rumbled to himself )at least I won't have to cut the

rass for a while). Marmalade went downstairs, still yawnin and walked throuh to the kitchen.

*uess what Marmalade was oin to have for breakfast+ es, baked beans of course"

Marmalade opened up his cupboard to et himself some baked beans and ... there were (#

baked beans left" )ats") Marmalade muttered. )I'll have to o out in that free$in, icy weather

and et some more baked beans. ouble rats")

/ucky for Marmalade, there was a very special tree in his arden. #n its lon, thick, stron

branches rew somethin very special. 0an you uess+ Baked beans of course" More beans

than you could ever possibly imaine. When the baked beans ot picked, the tree would 1ustrow some more.

2o, reluctantly, Marmalade put on his boots, scarf, hat and a very warm coat. %e went

outside and truded slowly throuh the snow to his baked bean tree. Marmalade stood and

stared, at a hole in front of him. (o tree and no baked beans. Marmalade rubbed his eyes in

disbelieve, but when he looked aain, the tree still wasn't there.

)Well" Where is my tree+ I must have baked beans, and I won't o to the shops to et them. I

want my baked beans and I want them now) he shouted and stomped around the arden.

2o, Marmalade decided to o for a walk to see if he could find his tree. %e didn't like walkin,

but if he didn't have a tree, then he wouldn't have baked beans, because he was 3A too la$yto o to the shops for his beans, as they 1ust didn't taste the same if they were store bouht.

Marmalade was such a snob"

Marmalade walked down his path, to the end of his street where he met obert, a friendly

alley cat.)%ello, Marmalade. What's the matter+ ou look anry.) obert asked.

)My baked bean tree is missin. %ave you seen it+) Marmalade runted in reply.

)(o, Marmalade, I haven't. Why has it one+ %ave you been waterin it properly+) obert

replied.

)I never water my tree. &hat's far too much work.) Marmalade said, and with a 'humph' and

walked off, with his head hih in the air, swishin his tail around. As Marmalade walked around

the corner, he came to the rocery shop where they sold baked beans, but Marmalade never

bouht them from here. %is own beans from his special tree were far better. oer, the &omcat

was workin in the shop.

)%ello, Marmalade" Why do you look so sad+) oer asked.

)My baked bean tree has one missin and I don't know why. %ave you seen it anywhere+)

Marmalade demanded.

)Well, no, I haven't. %ave you been lookin after it properly, by weedin it reularly+)

)Why should I bother weedin around my tree+ I'm too busy. &hat's far too much work.)

Marmalade said anrily and ave a 'humph' and walked off, with his head hih in the air,

swishin his tail around.

Marmalade continued walkin, aain lookin for his tree. 2oon he came to the bus stop.

&errance the tabby cat was standin and waitin for the number 45 bus to town.

)%ello Marmalade. ou look unhappy. What is the matter with you+) &errance asked politely.

)I'm lookin for my baked bean tree. It seems to have one missin and I don't know why. I

don't suppose that you have seen it anywhere+) Marmalade asked, ettin rather annoyed.

)(o, I haven't.) replied &errance, )%ave you been feedin it plant food and fertili$ers to keep

it stron and healthy+)

)Bah") said Marmalade )Why should I bother doin thins like that+ It's only a tree. Besides,

trees are stron enouh to look after themselves. I don't have time to do that sort of thin. &hat's

far too much work) and ave a 'humph' and walked off, with his head hih in the air, swishin his

tail around.

By now Marmalade had almost decided to walk back home when he came to the park.

/eanin on the entrance to the ate was Bernard the boss cat. Bernard always knew everythin

that was oin on. 2ometimes he even knew thins were oin to happen before they even

happened"

)%ello, Marmalade. ou do look ever so miserable. I hear that you've lost your baked bean

tree.) Bernard said.

)es, Bernard. (ot that it is any of your business, but I have. I don't suppose you've seen it

anywhere+) Marmalade asked.

)Actually, I think I have. But before I tell you, I think I should tell you that your baked beantree isn't very happy.)

)%umph") Marmalade said. )&rees don't have feelins. Where is it+)

Bernard directed him to the pond, where he thouht he had seen a very unhappy lookin tree

sittin on the park bench.

Marmalade didn't have to look for lon, the baked bean tree was found sittin on an old park

bench. %e was hunched over and cryin. (o, he was sobbin. %is tears were hue, fat drops

and they were pourin out of the tree's eyes.

)6m, hello tree.) Marmalade said, a little awkwardly. )I've been lookin for you absolutely

everywhere")

)Well, you've found me. ou can o home now.) replied the tree.

Marmalade looked around, took a deep, deep breath and bean to speak. )I ... I ... I need

you tree. ou have the most wonderful baked beans in the world. 0ome back. 7lease.)

)%a") scoffed the tree8 )Why on Earth do you think I would ever come back home with you+

ou are a horrible, mean, nasty, selfish, heartless, thouhtless ... cat. ou 1ust want me comehome so that you can eat my wonderful baked beans. Well, I can tell you somethin - I won9t"

ou never feed me, you never water me, you never weed me, you never talk to me, and I can

tell you that bein a baked bean tree is a very lonely business - no-one ever wants to talk to you

because of our uniue ... um ... aroma.)

Marmalade sihed. &he tree was riht. &he other cats had been riht. %e had nelected it -

his precious baked bean tree. %e reretted. :I am very sorry. I promise you that I will take a

ood care of you after this.;

(ow, months went by, and the tree was now happy, livin back in Marmalade's arden.

And true to his word, Marmalade watered the tree, weeded the tree, fed the tree, and even went

out sometimes 1ust to talk to the tree. 2o, this is where the story ends. &he moral of the story is

never take for ranted of what we have. We miht reret it when it is too late. &hank you.
