A VERY WARM WELCOME TO YOU ALL And particularly to the officials, players and supporters of Waltham Abbey are here this afternoon for this BetVictor South Central League match. This is the second meeting between our respective clubs this season as we met earlier in the league (away) winning 2-0 with Kelvin Bossman and Kwai Marsh-Brown scoring our goals

Recent weather has not been too kind and I think deterred some from making the trip here so particular thanks for coming this afternoon and those who did make the trip last Saturday to Hanwell Town saw an very enjoyable encounter in which we gave a good account of ourselves in putting the home club under great pressure in the first half, scoring twice and missing a penalty and only conceding in stoppage time. The second period saw Hanwell come back with 2 further goals to take the points.

This game saw the return to action of Alex Salmon after a very long time out of the game and we look seeing him strutting his stuff on a much more regular basis after his injury problems of the last 2 seasons. Then on Tuesday it was another postponement with the rearranged game away to South Park falling foul of the weather – meaning another match to be fitted into the schedule. And it is not too long before we have a trip to Maidenhead United to also look forward to in the next round of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup to be played on January 28th – a very busy month.

Our visitors this afternoon are currently riding high in the league and another tough encounter looks to be on the cards today so now for my usual closing plea to get behind the lads and support at all times – it really does make a difference and will do particularly over the coming months.

SOUTH CENTRAL PREVIEW

The South Central Hokey Cokey Last weekend saw the top three in the South Central Division jump around. Who will end up in a house of pain on Saturday? It's our preview of all the action.

Last Saturday saw the top three in the South Central Division doing their version of the Hokey Cokey, as leaders Ware lost to third place Westfield, who jumped up to second, whilst Ware, down to third, were also leapfrogged by Hanwell Town, who came from behind to go back to the top. Confused? Well it could happen all over again this weekend!

Our top match comes from Hanwell Town, where the Geordies take on Westfield in a match of first v second. After a blip when they managed only one victory from seven matches Town have got back to form of late, with two victories in a row, whilst their opponents have been superb, winning their last six matches after drawing the four before that. It’s difficult to pick a winner from that clash of the titans, but if there isn’t one, they could both be leapfrogged by Ware, who host Bedfont Sports.

The Blues have won three and lost three of their last six, but it’s worth noting that every defeat has come against a side in the top five. Sports are twelfth, but they certainly aren’t playing like a mid-table side, given they have only one defeat in their last ten matches and defeated promotion-chasing Waltham Abbey- one of the three who beat Ware- in their last match. It promises to be a titanic struggle at Wodson Park.

The Abbotts, in fourth, will try to bounce back from that defeat as they travel to face a Marlow side who will still be wondering how they lost to the Geordies last weekend. Two goals up after fourteen minutes, somehow, they ended up with nothing- but they have been rather difficult to beat, having lost fewer games that their visitors tomorrow despite being twelve points behind them. Abbey were on a magnificent run prior to that defeat against Bedfont Sports and will hope to get back to the form that had recently seen them defeat both Ware and another promotion-chasing side, Uxbridge.

Tooting & Mitcham United’s form over the last ten matches has been so up and down that you’d think they were dangling from a bungee rope. The Terrors lost to Uxbridge last time out, but when they’ve been good this season, they’ve been very good indeed, so FC Romania will travel to Imperial Fields hoping that the

Page 9: MARLOW€¦ · 2014-15 Manager’s Player-Of-The-Year and 2015-16 Supporters Player of the Season. ADAM RICHARDS Debut 17/08/13 Central defender who impressive displays earned him

SOUTH CENTRAL PREVIEW inconsistent Tooting turn up. The Wolves stopped a run of eight consecutive defeats last weekend by defeating Ashford Town and will hope to build on that.

Ashford Town will look to bounce back from that defeat, which dumped them once more at the bottom of the table, as they host Uxbridge. The Red Army, who see their side in sixth place, will be buoyed by that victory over Tooting and know that a win could possibly see them back into the top five at the Terrors expense.

Barking have been our form side over the last ten matches and have closed to within three points of a playoff place. The Blues host Chalfont St Peter after taking twenty-five points from the last thirty, their only defeat coming against leaders Hanwell Town, whilst the Saints are on a bit of a downward spiral with only one point from twelve so will be desperate to end that cycle.

Eighth travels to ninth as Chertsey Town head to Larges Lane to take on Bracknell Town. The Robins appear to be on the up having won their last three matches, whilst the Curfews ended a stale spell by thumping Harlow Town last time out.

Harlow, in tenth, are on their travels once again, as they head around the M25 to take on Chipstead. The Hawks, who don’t have a manager as we write, have only one win in ten matches, and will have to be back to their best to take anything from a Chipstead side who have been in superb form of late, unbeaten in a six match spell that has brought them five victories.

Another side who have been impressive in recent weeks are South Park. The Sparks have lost only one of their last six in a run that has included victories over Hanwell and Bracknell Town(s), and travel to Northwood full of confidence. The Woods, in contrast, have suffered five consecutive defeats and will want to bounce back.

Finally, Hertford Town take on Staines Town. The hosts have taken only seven

points from their last thirty and have lost six of their last seven, whilst their

visitors have only one more point from the same period and are without a victory

in their last six.

THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER COLUMN The managers probably won’t thank us for saying it but it’s always great to see Non-League talent move up into the Football League. We’ve seen a host of players make the step up just in this past week – all with their own stories to tell.

Josh March has worked his way up the divisions with Alvechurch and, after hitting 24 goals in 27 games for Leamington, is moving up to League Two with Forest Green. March told us in last week’s paper of how Non-League football has prepared him for the step-up – one he wasn’t ever sure he’d get a crack at a few years ago.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild quickly made an impression with Bromley during this campaign and he’s been snapped up by Portsmouth. Then Barnet’s Jack Taylor is stepping up to Peterborough United – a club well known for mining Non-League over the years with great success – for a fee of £500,000 which could rise to £1 million with add-ons.

Our columnist and BT Sport commentator Adam Virgo recently wrote that Taylor is the best midfielder in the National League. Perhaps Posh were reading! The moves didn’t stop there with Rob Atkinson joining Oxford United from Eastleigh. The young defender has impressed for the Spitfires this season having joined in the summer from Basingstoke Town. It just goes to show how much talent there is throughout Non-League football.

Of course, for the managers it’s not great timing. They’ve lost important players at an important part of the season. It’s not as straightforward as just going out and handpicking a replacement. It does, however, reflect well on them and their clubs. Non-League football thrives and survives on giving young footballers the opportunity to showcase their talent and the platform to push onto the League. Are there more footballers just waiting for their chance? You can be sure of it.

Matlock Town have had their ground broken into for the third time in three months. They certainly aren’t the only Non-League club to suffer at the hands of mindless thieves. It is soul destroying for the hard-working volunteers that put in all the hours they can to their club only to have to clear up the mess.

Unfortunately, many Non-League clubs and grounds are soft targets. Often tucked away and with alcohol and other stock, or the prospect of cash left inside – they are an appealing proposition. Clubs no doubt have insurance but the costs of additional security only add an extra burden.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WALTHAM ABBEY

Waltham Abbey Youth Club, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex,

first played football at “Capershotts” during the Second

World War and in later years the club became known as

firstly Waltham Abbey, then Abbey Sports. Both clubs gained

numerous honours in the Northern Suburban League.

The club was founded in 1944 with a mix of players from Waltham Abbey

Youth Club and former juniors from Tottenham Hotspur under the

leadership of the trainer and manager Wally Hickman. The secretary was

Mo (Maurice) Ward. The President was Capt. Larkin.

In their early years they played to a high standard and reached the final of

the Herts Junior Cup in three years out of four but lost on each occasion –

including a loss to Redbourn Rovers of 4–5 after they had been leading 4–1.

Some of the leading players in the early years included left winger Dave

Cook who was killed in a road crash, centre-half Robbo Robinson and inside

forward Frank Blower. Frank later became a dedicated treasurer of the club

with Ray Buck as a similarly dedicated club secretary.

Waltham Abbey United emerged in the late sixties and a new clubhouse was

built. In 1974 the club amalgamated with the successful Beechfield Sports

and joined the Metropolitan League, which later became the London

Spartan League.

In 1976 the club won the Essex Junior Cup and later that summer dropped

the Beechfield Sports tag on the advice of The FA. Two years later the club

reached the final of the Essex Intermediate Cup and won the league’s

Division One title, and, having gained Senior Status, were promoted. In their

first season they won the title without losing a game and were again

promoted this time to the Premier Division where they remained until

season 2000–01.

Season 2001–02 was spent in the Essex & Herts Border Combination to

allow them to move across the pyramid. They were elected to the Essex

Senior League for season 2002–03. In 2004–05, in addition to winning both

A BRIEF HISTORY OF WALTHAM ABBEY the League Cup and the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy

they finished in their highest position of 3rd.

In 1990–91 the club were inaugural finalists in the Roy Bailey

Memorial Trophy, a competition for local teams including

Cheshunt, Ware, and Hertford Town.

It was won for the first time in 1994–95 when they beat Hoddesdon Town.

In both 1996–97 and 2005 (in the final held over from the previous season)

they beat St Margaretsbury.

In 1998–99 they won the London Senior Cup with a fine 3–2 win over

Bedfont at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground, and they also secured the Spartan

South Midlands Challenge Trophy.

Recent seasons have seen a lot of changes on and off the pitch with

floodlights being installed in 1990 and the ground levelled. A great amount

of work has been done around the clubhouse and a 200-seater stand built.

A number of seats were purchased from Manchester City´s old Maine Road

and these were installed during the summer of 2005 as the club strived to

improve facilities on and off the field and move up the non-league pyramid.

On 2 May 2009, the Abbott's capped off a successful 2008–09 season by

beating Concord Rangers 5–4 on penalties after a 1–1 draw to win the

Isthmian League Division 1 North Play-off's. They played in the Isthmian

League Premier Division for the first time in their history in 2009–10.

However, despite winning the last two games of their season, they finished

21st and were relegated back to Isthmian League Division 1 North for the

2010–11 season on goal difference.

In 2011 John Martin was elected Chairman and in subsequent years has transformed the ground and facilities. A new pitch with professional irrigation system has been laid 3 times with the surface now the envy of many a grass pitch in the league. A new car park has been laid, replacing the old shingle, a long overdue addition. In 2019 it is expecting new changing rooms will be completed with a new clubhouse pitch side the next project.

WALTHAM ABBEY PEN PICS TYLA DICKINSON – GOALKEEPER

Tyla joined the club for a month’s work experience from QPR. The youngster

made a memorable first team debut in the 6-1 victory over Northwood – a

game that would not have looked so comprehensive had Tyla not made so

many great saves. He’s continued to impress during his time with the club.

LOUIS BOWEN – DEFENDER

One of our current crop of tall centre backs, 26 year old Louis joined the club

last season and quickly established himself as a key component of our

defensive unit. He has experience with Hertford Town, Ware, Hoddesdon

and Hadley.

ROSS DEDMAN – DEFENDER

Ross joined the club last season and made an instant impression leading to

him being made captain for 2019/20. Ross has played for Haringey Borough,

Cheshunt, Ware, Potters Bar and St Albans where he played in an FA Cup

First Round tie against Luton at Kenilworth Road.

RYAN DEAR – DEFENDER

Ryan completes are trio of tall centre backs. Ryan is known for his tough

tackling but has also already shown an eye for goal this season scoring twice

in his first six games. He’s played for other local clubs like Cheshunt,

Brimsdown and Enfield FC.

MARK TWUMSI – DEFENDER

Mark joined the club in the summer having previously played for Hertford

Town, Cheshunt and Hoddesdon. Mark has quickly established himself as a

reliable fullback who can also cover the centre defensive positions if

required and has been a regular so far this season.

RIMMEL DANIEL – DEFENDER

Left back Rimmel’s Abbotts career started back in 2015 but he’s also turned

out for Oxford United, Gillingham, Leyton Orient, Hornchurch and Tilbury.

As well as being a popular man at Capershotts he’s also represented

Grenada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Page 31: MARLOW€¦ · 2014-15 Manager’s Player-Of-The-Year and 2015-16 Supporters Player of the Season. ADAM RICHARDS Debut 17/08/13 Central defender who impressive displays earned him

WALTHAM ABBEY PEN PICS ROB CLARK – MIDFIELD

Rob is now in his second season for the club having been a regular last season.

The versatile midfielder who can play in a variety of positions as well as

provide a goal threat has also played for Thurrock, Hornchurch and Basildon.

JACK DAVENEY – MIDFIELD

Fans favourite Jack is one of our own and came through the youth ranks at

the club. He’s famed for his set-piece delivery, energy, work rate and

hairstyles. He also once apparently scored a great goal against Hornchurch,

ask him about it.

ARON GORDON – MIDFIELD/FORWARD

22-year-old Aron has amassed over 50 appearances for the club in two spells

punctuated by a move to Grays Athletic. The attacking midfielder, who

started out with the Doncaster Rovers academy will be hoping to add to his

club goal tally this season.

NATHAN KORANTENG – MIDFIELD/FORWARD

Nathan is now in his third season with the club and a firm favourite with the

locals. The winger started out at Peterborough United and made his debut

in the Championship aged just 17. The reliable attacker has also played for

Woking, Boreham Wood, Tonbridge Angels, Aveley, Harlow and Cheshunt.

DANIEL UNGUDI – MIDFIELD

Youngster Daniel is new to the club this season having previously played for

Hitchin Town, Hertford Town and St Margaretsbury. Daniel made an instant

impact in front of his new fans with a goal off the bench in the first home

game of the season against his former club Hertford.

CHARLIE EDWARDS – MIDFIELD

Charlie is in his second season with the Abbotts and already established

himself as a reliable and flexible player. The former Hertford Town and

Harlow Town player had the honour of having his name on the 2018 FA Cup

Final ball after scoring an ‘impactful’ goal in that year’s tournament. Find

him on Instagram for more info.

Page 32: MARLOW€¦ · 2014-15 Manager’s Player-Of-The-Year and 2015-16 Supporters Player of the Season. ADAM RICHARDS Debut 17/08/13 Central defender who impressive displays earned him

WALTHAM ABBEY PEN PICS DARELLE RUSSELL – FORWARD

Darelle’s time at the club goes all the way back 2013 and he’s been a

consistent goal scorer throughout his time as an Abbott. He’s also played for

Barking, Cheshunt, Harrow Borough, Billericay and Antigua Barracuda. He’s

already off the mark with a few goals this season and will hope to add plenty

more in the coming months.

DOMINIQUE NJOYA – DEFENDER

Dominque has become a consistent part of the defensive unit since joining

the club this season. He offers a balance of defence and attack in the full

back position and has been a regular so far this season.

LEON MCKENZIE – FORWARD

Leon signed for the club a couple of weeks into the season from New

Salamis. He has instantly hit the ground running scoring a goal per game so

far. The striker knows gaffer Michael Spencer from their time together at

Hornchurch and gives the side plenty of presence and goal threat up top.

JUNIOR APPIAH – FORWARD

Junior is enjoying his second spell at the Abbotts after joining at the end of

last season from Cheshunt. He’s previously played for Maldon & Tiptree,

Thurrock, Billericay, Ware, Haringey Borough and Aveley where he played

alongside Abbotts joint manager Billy Holland.

CHARLIE CROWLEY – GOALKEEPER

Charlie joined the club during the season from Ware and made his debut

against Tooting & Mitcham in September. He’s impressed in his first few games

for the Abbotts with his shot stopping ability and command of his back four.

BILLY HOLLAND – MIDFIELD/JOINT MANAGER

Billy has been with the club for four seasons and been an instrumental part

of the side in that time making 30+ appearances each season as well as

weighing in with his fair share of goals from midfield. Since December

2018 he has also become on-field half of our dynamic management duo

and guiding the club to a 9th place finish last season.
