INTRODUCTION

Leaders hit crossroad moments intheir development. How leaders breakthroughto make their unique life contribution is thefocus of MARKETPLACE BREAKTHROUGH.

This process distills twenty years of coaching, training, best-practice, and researchin the area of leadership development. The constructs and strategies found herehave helped leaders like yourself move onto thenext level of leadership effectiveness and Kingdom contribution.

How Leaders Breakthrough

FIRST, they decide the end. They choose to live with a big-picture, Kingdom perspective. Theymake choices required to align their lives with God’s purposes and set a pace to finish well.(FIRST Quarter of Marketplace Breakthrough)

NEXT, they invest themselves in the study of their development as a leader, and learn how tosteward their life experiences in order to gain clarity as to their unique contribution.(SECOND Quarter of Marketplace Breakthrough)

THIRD, they learn how to make their contribution in all of the domains of their life with increasingeffectiveness. They are able to bring who they are to what they do, and learn how to say no to theGood in order to say YES to the best. (THIRD Quarter of Marketplace Breakthrough)

FINALLY, they chose to address the obstacles that historically have held them back, and theychoose and intentional path that will cultivate personal growth, and secure the help that they willneed. (FOURTH Quarter of Marketplace Breakthrough)

Does this type of work really make a difference in the bottom-line?

“All the growth in a person’s life occurs in stages. Within each stage, the individual comes to a pointwhere it I no longer possible to base future growth upon existing knowledge and skills… Sometimesthis ceiling is permanent, which is why many people fail to grow beyond a particular stage ofdevelopment… (cultivating) the future-based self … dramatically changes his or her position insociety. -- Dan Sullivan, Strategic Coach

Investing in yourself and your abilities can lead you to make a significant contribution-- through yourcompany, through your opportunities you create for others, and the expansion of God’s Kingdom. The more you clarify your contribution, the greater your ability to empower others in the same.

These resources, constructs and strategies do assist leaders in a breakthrough in theirdevelopment. The rest is up to you.

God develops leaders over their lifetimes. All leaders experience times oftransition, plateau and arrested development. Breakthroughs are required to move a leader to newstages of growth and leadership effectiveness.

Breakthroughs moments shift an individual’sparadigms and shape a leader’s future.Breakthrough moments propel leaders forward.

This resource is the by-product of overtwenty years of leadership developmentcoaching by Dr. Terry Walling, and over fortyyears of research of Dr. J. Robert Clintonof Fuller Theological Seminary.

The Making of a Leader was writtenby Dr. J. Robert Clinton to highlighthis ongoing research of how God shapes leader. Clinton has studied over 3000 Biblical, historical and contemporary Kingdom leaders.

STUCK! written by Dr. Terry Walling in order to apply Clinton’s lifelong development research to theTransitions every leader must face. Coaching hundreds of leaders through these crossroads momentsin their development development, has resulted in a way to introduce leadership development, and aconceptual framework for how leaders breakthrough.

THE PATH Steps that Lead to Kingdom ContributionSteps that Lead to Kingdom Contribution

God has always been at work in a leaders life, shaping that life for aunique and ultimate contribution in the expansion of His Kingdom.

The issue is not whether God has been at work in a life, but our abilityto recognize what God is doing, and then the courage to align ourlives with His work (faith). God reveals his plans to leaders who wantto know, and who demonstrate their desire to know by surrenderingthe control of their lives to Him.

Discovery of one’s destiny comes from the perspective; the skills oflooking back to gain insights from one’s life experiences. God shapeseach of us through significant encounters with people, events and lifecircumstances. Time analysis of a leader’s life brings greaterunderstanding of one’s life contribution.

As leaders look back, they begin to see forward. Creating a life-mapof the journey helps chronicle insights that guide future decision-making. The difference between a leader and follower is perspective.Leaders often work on gaining perspective for the others or theirorganizations, but rarely for personal development.

Each life goes through a series of development phases. Transitionsmore leaders from one phase to the next. Development phases areunique segments where God builds skills and character.

TRANSITIONS

THE PATH Steps that Lead to Kingdom ContributionSteps that Lead to Kingdom Contribution

Transitions are times of in-between, and create the need to move tothe next level of development. Without transitions, leaders stall orarrest in their growth. They are defining moments that God uses toshape leaders, and move them forward. Transitions also consolidatelearning, deepen values, and shift the paradigms of leaders.

Three key transitions occur in the lives of passionate leaders who areChrist-followers. These transitions clarify and re-clarify what’simportant. The three generic transitions consists of; awakening (20-30s), deciding (45+) and finishing (late 50s-60s).

Transitions also net life messages. These messages are lifeinvestments and entrustments from God. Life messages can alsobecome guideposts that help point the way forward. These lifelessons can be shaped our core values and convictions.

God grants to every leader a measure of influence. God calls each tolive out their calling in four core domains: family, vocation, thecommunity (global), and Church. Kingdom influence is about bringinglife, hope and truth about Christ to each of these domains.

A committed, Christ-follower’s influence can be organized into andynamic statement of personal calling called a Kingdom mandate; aone-page summary of a leader’s best understanding to-date of his orher Kingdom contribution. Mandates are unleashed by commitmentsof surrender and stewardship. Both empower leaders unique role inadvancing God’s Kingdom.

The farther leaders go, the more they realize that who they are (firstorder call) is of equal or greater in importance than what theycontribute or deliver (second order call). Both need focus, but pastmid 40s, “being” is imperative for clarity. And, while it is not an eitheror, leaders begin to see the need to prioritize being

Along the way, God begins to surface hints of a leader’s ultimatecontribution. As leader’s clarify their role; what they do and themethods they use to offer others their contribution.

Each of us has a unique role to play in the lives of others, and as roleis clarified, leaders begin to develop the courage to say “no” to newopportunities. It becomes clear that even though they can do manythings, there are few things God has designed for us to do and be.

God moves leaders to live lives that are integrated; instead of tryingto wear five different hats, it is now one “hat” (i.e., make our keycontribution) in each of the life domains.

THE PATH Steps that Lead to Kingdom ContributionSteps that Lead to Kingdom Contribution

Leaders must now allocate their energies and resources in a focusedway. Life will always entail responsibilities and duties, but as leaderscontinue to see their Kingdom contribution, a switch occurs; where80% of one’s energies and focused effort moves toward the living outof one’s Kingdom mandate, and 20% allocated to life duties andresponsibilities.

If leaders do not say NO to good things, they will not have the energyor resources to say YES to best things. Breakthrough experiencesmove leaders off plateau, and away from potential burn out. Asleaders stay faithful to uncover God’s work in their lives, they move toa time of convergence.

Convergence is about the moment when all of who a leader’s is tobrought to an assignment and what a leader does. A leader’s life, withall its ups and downs, is now woven together into to a make a uniqueand ultimate contribution and a sense of “for this I was born.

God blesses a leader with greater sense of spiritual authority so thatwhether in the marketplace or in vocational ministry, they are able tomake a deposit and legacy into the lives of others. Even though theymay do fewer things, what they do leaves a lasting impact that extendChrist’s Kingdom.

THE TRUTH ABOUT LEADERS

The startling conclusion fromDr. Clinton’s research is thatFEW LEADERS FINISH WELL.Only one in three (J.Robert Clinton).

Finishing well has to do withreaching the end of one’slife more passionate aboutChrist and His purposes.Willingness to continue tofocus on Christ’s plan.

Finishing well will require aseries of transitions andbreakthroughs in thepersonal developmentof a leader.

TITLE: Deep ChangeAUTHOR: Robert E. QuinnPUBLISHER: Jossey-Bass Inc.DATE OF PUBLICATION: 1996PAGES: 228

SUMMARY OF CONTENT: This book shows how aleader can transform separate individuals into cohesive teams.Deep Change assumes that one person can change an organization. It shows how aninternally driven leader views the world differently. It illustrates how a transformationalleader requires the ability to take significant risks. “Each of us has the potential to changeour respective worlds. But, because the price of change is so high, we seldom take thechallenge. Fear blinds the possibility of excellence.”

The author points out that individuals are educated to manage but not to lead. Throughthis resource, you see how successful impact necessitates continuous personal change. You are also confronted with the fact that changing an organization requires sacrifice byfirst the leader, and then all who are involved. It will mean engaging in real conflict, and itwill not always be pleasant.

Quinn lays a strong foundation by first differentiating between deep change andincremental change. There is little doubt that most change that takes place in the life of anindividual is incremental. Because people are uncomfortable with major change theychoose to move in small steps. The possible exception to the choice of incremental changeoccurs when a person is faced with a major crisis.

For example, when a person experiences a heart attack, they are motivated to make deeplifestyle changes in habits such as smoking or dietary chooses. Or when a marriage is onthe brink of divorce, marriage partners are motivated to make sweeping changes in howthey communicate or handle conflict. However, beyond these periodic times of beingmotivated by crisis, people usually make changes slowly and incrementally, rather thanmaking needed deep change.

The tendency towards incremental change over deep change is also true on anorganizational level. Rarely do organizations, including the church, make deep majorchanges. While it may be argued that leadership needs to be mindful of bringing peoplealong in the midst of change, there are certainly times that organizations need to experiencedeep change to survive.

Quinn is correct in stating that without deep change, routine patterns move organizationsincreasingly toward decay and stagnation. This is true in the life of the church today. Thechurch has grown comfortable with the patterns of ministry from years past and as a resulthas lost much of its influence in the changing culture.

One of Quinn’s foundational themes is that personal deep change must precede deep changewithin a system or organization. While most of the time organizational change is seen as a top-down process, Quinn argues that it can also happen from the bottom-up. He states that deepchange requires a personal evaluation of the ideologies that under gird the organizational culture. This is a refreshing insight that has application to other relational contexts.

As people desire to see change in the lives of others, whether in parenting, marriage or workrelationships, they first need to examine what changes need to occur in themselves. It is true thatwe do not easily recognize the part that we play in the problem. This thought is consistent withthe words of Jesus in Matthew 7:3, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’seye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

Another topic that is very applicable to numerous arenas of life is Quinn’s discussion of the logicof task pursuit. Most people, under the pressure of task completion, have no opportunity toconsider routine maintenance. This is true in the life of the individual on multiple levels. If aperson does not take time to experience physical renewal through rest and exercise the body willexperience exhaustion. This is certainly true with the spiritual life as well.

People need to carve out time from the pursuit of tasks to spend time alone with God. The logicof task pursuit is also true in the life of the church. Each church needs to set aside time to revisitits mission and to ensure that the work of the church is in alignment with that mission.

Other helpful insights are found in Quinn’s discussion on why organizational change doesn’t takeplace. He states that the dominant coalition in an organization is seldom interested in makingdeep changes. Therefore, deep change is often driven from the outside. This has been true in thelife of many organizations. Furthermore, there are pressures within most organizations to conformto the prevailing structure.

Quinn does an excellent job of identifying the barriers of bureaucratic culture, embedded conflict, and personal time constraints. It is helpful to recognize that in most cases people do not need newskills and competencies, but instead they need a new perspective that allows them to act asempowered leaders in a changing organization. While this section on overcoming resistance tochange was helpful, it would have been strengthened with practical examples of how individualsbrought about significant change.

There is also much to appreciate with Quinn’s emphasis on the transitions from the technical, thetransactional, and the transformational paradigms. Quinn’s description of each paradigm and theparadigm’s representative would prove to be very beneficial to any organizational leader’sattempt to understand those that they lead and the unique perspective they hold about theorganization.

Finally the culmination of Quinn’s emphasis on empowerment and ultimate transformation of anorganization is what he refers to as the transformational cycle. The cycle is a helpful visualreminder that deep change does not come to a point of completion. It is a cycle that will itselfbecome routine and stagnate if there is not a time of reinvention and realignment of self and theorganization.

While written from a business perspective, Deep Change is applicable for anyone who desires tobring about change within an organization.

The book is structured in an easy to follow format and includes reflection and discussionquestions at the end of each chapter to provide further assistance to the reader in taking stepstowards deep change, on both a personal and organizational level.
