• The Total Quality Management (TQM) operations management philosophy is based on the idea that everyone in the organisation must be committed to quality. Within the organisation relationships are changed, so departments become customers of and suppliers to other departments. These supplier/customer relationship should ensure a chain of quality throughout the organisation. Weak links in this chain can be identified and strengthened. This is done by the use of improved working practices and improved worker commitment to quality.

Comparing and contrasting TQM and continuous improvement is difficult.But we can say that TQM is more directive, whilst continuous improvement is more participative. Workers are taught to use TQM, whilst workers are encouraged and motivated to participate in continuous improvement.
