Journal Entry:

My first week was a great experience. It was neat to experience the office lifestyle. From always working at a restaurant to working in an office, it is much different. At first they gave me tasks that would familiarize me with their server. So I was searching for files, making sure they were named correctly as well as formatted appropriately. Later in the week I begun working with their TV station. They needed someone to create a binder that included a printout of every slide that’s on the station so they can refer to the slides in meetings.

So far I am enjoying my time at Miromar. They do a great job at giving me tasks that will educate me, rather than waste my time. This week I got into some photoshop work. They have logos from the outlets that all the stores have sent them. My task was to recreate these logos and ensure that they are in a proper format for the interactive directory on Miromar Outlets website. Then I will have to upload these images to the proper locations online.

Also, this week they invited me to a brainstorming meeting with Miromar Design Center. Miromar Design Center is hoping to revamp their entire marketing campaign and start fresh with a new campaign. They allowed me to sit in on this meeting and speak any opinions that I may have. This was a fun and educational experience for me.

My main task this week has been pretty fun for me. My project has been to revamp newspaper clippings that have Miromar references in them. Someone in PR finds every newspaper or magazine that Miromar is ever referenced in and clips these articles out to put in a large display book. My job is to scan these articles and then revamp them so they appear to be a higher quality. I get rid of the grey in the paper and try to liven up the color in the images. This way, when someone is browsing through all of Miromars accomplishments, they look more appealing.

This task actually inspired me to start up my own side job. Using the skills that I learned, I have been able to help family and friends restore newspapers that hold memories which they wish to cherish for years to come.

Even though I have yet to profit from this skill, I have made an advertisement that I plan to use to sell my services to those may be in need of these talents.

During this week I wasn’t given any extra work that is not already on my to do list. So most of it was repetition. The work that I completed this week was uploading Miromar Outlet logos to their website, downloading picture files that were sent from a major designer in the Miromar Design Center and scanning and revamping every newspaper article that Miromar was mentioned during 2009 and 2010.

This week, just like last week wasn’t filled with any new work. I focused on my most time consuming task, which was scanning and revamping every newspaper article that Miromar was mentioned during 2009 and 2010. Lots of time was spent on this task and I finally completed it this week. Also, during this week I came up with a structured way to control their usage of paper. They were in need of a better inventory system for the 20+ types of paper that they use. I developed an easy to use spreadsheet that they can fill out even after I’m gone, which shows how much paper was used at different times of the years and its product numbers for easy re-ordering.

This isn’t the inventory system that I created but it contains many of the same elements. It included detailed paper information, costs, usage, bi-weekly counts and recommended orders.

This week, I was given the 2011 newspaper articles so I completed all the scans and started the revamping. Also, I helped in the printing and folding of 50 new menus for Miromar Lakes Beach Club and compiled a binder of designer folders for the owner to approve so we can use them in collateral. To finish off the week, I began working on their marketing summary. A marketing summary binder is put together every year for a conference in October. Since the conference is in October, every marketing summary binder is only completed up to that date. My job is to complete years 2009, 2010 and 2011 from October to December.

Unfortunately, since I am not in the office, I can’t put out menu design in here.

I may have not mentioned this yet but I am also a server at Miromar Lakes so it was very nice to work in the marketing department because I was able to see our menu before it went to the resturaunt. This gave me a chance to critique the design and contents of the menu. :-D

This week didn’t include many new tasks. The only new task was to edit Facebook and Twitter settings. There was a few things that needed to be adjusted so they gave me the username and passwords and I went in and change what needed to be changed. Besides that, I registered some more URLS to Google, Bing, Yahoo and Gigablast. And then I continued to work on the marketing summary, a very long and tedious task.

This week, I worked a lot on the marketing summary. I am almost complete, I should be finished next time I work. I also worked on paper inventory and tried to find all the prices for every paper type that is used in house. Another task that I was given, was to design the Miromar Realty YouTube channel. This was a task that I found to be quite fun. If you’d like to check it out it is at www.youtube.com/MiromarRealty.

This is the YouTube page that I created…

(Kind of matches the color scheme of this presentation)

This week I participated in a video shoot for Miromar Design Center. They chose about 9 people from the offices that fit they roles they were looking for. The video shoot was for part of a commercial; it was about a 10 second shoot where we are just “shopping” around the design center atrium. Besides this, I worked on paper inventory, finding paper costs, 2009 marketing summary and registering URLS to popular search engines. I have almost completed the marketing summary, just one last section is going through internal proofing and the after that I will be complete. J

This week I was told that my YouTube channel for Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club as so good that the head of Miromar Outlets would like me to design one for him. This was nice to hear and gave me another fun project to work on. So this week, I worked on some more newspaper revamps and did some work on the YouTube channel. My workload has dramatically decreased and the things that I’m working on are beginning to become more and more repetitious but I’m getting a lot of much needed work done for Miromar. So I’m glad that this isn’t just a bump in a log internship.

This week I have done some more work on the Miromar Outlets YouTube channel. It’s taking much longer than the Miromar Lakes channel because we have to get all the logos approved. In order to include all of the brands, we need to ask every store and then get it approved by Miromar. Also, this week I worked more on our paper inventory system. It’s getting a lot less complicated now that I’ve gotten a lot of the kinks out.

The use of logos in the YouTube page never did get approved. But, here is what it looked like with the logos. The final product is everything except the bags and the text below them.

This week I worked a little more on the Miromar Outlets YouTube channel, I created a video for Miromar Outlets Malloween event, I created a signage binder for Miromar Outlets and I did some revamping of more PR clippings. I have really enjoyed the digital projects, web design, Photoshop restorations, video creation etc. I don’t believe that this is what I would like to pursue as a career but it is a very valuable skill to learn. Not only is it a fun hobby but also this knowledge will be a necessity if I plan to be a marketing director that oversees a creative department.

This week, I finished working on creating a video for the Halloween Party at Miromar Lakes, I uploaded the photos to that party to Miromar Lakes’ website for resident viewing purposes, and I worked on the revamping on the PR articles. This job is beginning to bore me. Besides the few small new tasks, most of my work is becoming very repetitive, tedious and time consuming. I think it may also be a case of senioritis kicking in. I have reached my 120 hours this week but I am scheduled to work until December 2nd. My projected total hours will be about 145.  Six more days of work here, I’m counting down the days.

My term here is coming down to the line.  There isn’t much to write this week. I finished up my PR clipping revamps, my eyes have had enough, and they’re finally getting a rest. Now I am working on the 2010 marketing summary. I was dreading this project because I remember how difficult the 2009 marketing summary was but it’s going pretty smoothly this time around. After, completing many other projects, I have gained a better understanding of the server and how to find files.  This project may be the last project that I have at Miromar. I have 5 days left and it might take all of them. After that, I will have some free time and will be able to work on my employer letters project and the PowerPoint that is due for this class. Graduation is growing near!

Senioritis is kicking in! I’m seeing more “Completes” and less “In Progress” on my project list. My goal is to complete the 2010 Marketing summary. I am not all the way done but I have 3 more days of work left to go. It feels nice that it’s coming to an end. I’ve learned a lot here but I think my learning curve is slowly leveling out at this place. They started me out with intermediate work, which I was happy about but the constant flow of intermediate work with very little advanced projects is becoming slightly repetitious. So hopefully next week, I’ll complete the 2010 Marketing summary and be able to do a little bit of work my final project for this class.

DONE!!! It feels so nice to be done! And I’m really happy that I completed all of the work that was assigned to me. It was coming down to the end and I had a lot of work still left to do. Even though that weren’t completely necessary, I still wanted to leave knowing that I have completed every task on my projects list. It was a tough last two or three weeks to get through knowing that graduation is right around the corner but I am happy that it is finally here. I had a very nice fairwell lunch full of nice words, lots of thank you’s and tons of pizza. I am happy that I chose Miromar as my place of internship and I recommend that FGCU promotes this organization when they are directing students who to talk to.
