CASE STUDY Clients: NukoToys, U.S. Department of Education, WTTW-TV Project: Mission to Planet 429 Online Tier II: Single Player Educational Game

BUSINESS ISSUE

The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement established a Ready to Learn grant, allocating $47.5 million to four projects over a 5-year span. Mission to Planet 429 is one of the four programs that received funding, and all of the projects are targeted toward boosting students’ reading ability. The Department of Education and WTTW’s (Chicago’s PBS affiliate) primary goal was to create an online, 3D virtual world to teach first through third graders reading comprehension skills. There are three core beliefs that Mission to Planet 429 seeks to accomplish:

1. Learning should be a fun and engaging experience for children. 2. New skills are best learned in contexts where children are able to actively use these

new skills. 3. Children need to be supported and “scaffolded” as they learn new skills and

knowledge.

SUCCESS METRICS

Mission to Planet 429 was the first game ever bought by PBS Kids. Using summative testing techniques in schools and day camps, the game exceeded expectations for teaching second and third graders how to navigate and process non-fiction text.
