Club Development INTRODUCTION
It is a fundamental link that well trained and mentored coaches can in turn develop technically
competent, confident, decision making rugby players! With this in mind it is critical to understand
the required player competencies and ensure that each coach is suitably trained to ensure each
development stage is supported.
Rugby is a late specialisation sport, which requires a generalised approach in early training stages.
During this time, children are developmentally ready to acquire the fundamental movement skills
that are the cornerstones of all athletic development.
The introduction of the ABCs of athleticism (Agility, Balance, Co‐ordination, Speed) during this period
will lay the foundation of athletic and rugby excellence for later years.
The Long Term Player Development strategy is based on the required technical, tactical, mental and
physiological requirements of sporting performance and is broken down into 6 key stages. It is
therefore imperative that each coach understands the player requirements of each stage and
develops short and long term actions plans and coaching sessions on how each player in a squad will
acquire the expected skills by the end of each stage. This way each coach can be confident and
satisfied that they will be passing on suitably developed players to the next coach in the club.
DEVELOPING THE WHOLE PLAYER
It is important to recognise that a coach’s responsibility is to develop the whole player, rather than
just the player’s technical abilities; this means that whilst being a coach first and foremost you may
also need to be a mentor, confidant, guide and example setter to each of your players.
This means that coaching sessions should cover the following principles in addition to technical
excellence:
1. Values of Rugby – Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship
2. Principles of Play – Contest Possession, Go Forward, Pressure, Continuity, Support &
Communication
3. 5Cs – Confidence, Competence, Creativity, Character and Connection
4. Whole, Part, Whole coaching model
5. Observational Analysis
6. Skills Acquisition
Part of all coaches annual objectives should be to prepare each player for the technical and mental
challenges that will be required of each player in the following year. This way a coach can
confidently say that they successfully prepared a player for senior rugby whilst in their care. This will
then support Market Rasen & Louth RUFCs lasting legacy of continually developing the best rugby
players of all ages.
