Market dynamics – European market, week 43 (October 2016)

Demand of tropical fruits and vegetables has been very low in October due a low demand for fresh fruit and vegetables in general: the drop in temperatures, school-holidays at the end of the month and the presence of tropical fruit from the Mediterranean area (Israel and Spain) has not favoured sales. However, a certain progression has been noticed in the arrivals from overseas and stocks for the winter season started to build-up. Prices are low for all most common products with the exceptions of avocado, grapes and berries. Avocado – The market has been undersupplied as the season from Peru, RSA and Kenya are going to an end but available volumes are becoming sufficient for the market needs as Chile is on market with record volumes. The demand is not as dynamic as few weeks ago; prices of hass avocado remain high for big and medium sizes while are considerably decreasing for small sizes which are largely present in the new season crops. The market for green avocado is well supplied by multiple origins but prices are very low because of low demand for these varieties. Hass avocado from the Mediterranean area (Israel, Spain and Morocco) will be on the market after mid-November. Beans – With the end of the European season, prices have increased for xf beans from Kenya and present a large price range for Morocco. Berries – The season started with a good sales pace; Argentina entered the market 10 days earlier than usual and should benefit of high prices until the arrival of the sea-freighted shipments from Chile in December. The production in Chile is set to reach 141.000 tons (+4% year-on-year) which should lead to an increase in exports (94.000 tons). Peru is also on the market and good export volumes are expected also from South Africa while exports from Uruguay should be lower in comparison to the last season.

Kiwi – European kiwifruits on the market reduce prices and trade opportunities for the overseas fruits; however, the demand is not motivated at present and there are still big volumes from New Zealand, preferred because of their quality. The Northern Hemisphere crop will be significantly lower in comparison to 2015-2016 when surplus volumes were registered: the total harvest in the world major producing countries should reach 714.000 tons (-14% year-on year) including the US (-18% alone).

Lime – Very low prices due to volumes bigger than the market needs: demand is low and prices bottomed 3,00 Euro/ctn, rarely exceeding 4,00 Euro for the best sizes and coloured fruits. The price range is quite large in some cases because of quality problems, with products class II obtaining 2,00 Euro/ctn and less. The oversupply should continue for 2-3 weeks.

Mango – Increasing volumes on the market with the new arrivals from Brazil which now include all fibreless varieties; forecasts indicate that the droughts in Brazilian production areas should not impact on the exports towards the European market. The demand is very low and prices have been below average, rarely exceeding 4,00 Euro/ctn for tommy atkins while kent, keith and palmer have been better quoted. Prices of air-freighted fruits continue satisfactory.

Melons – Good prices for overseas melons (charantais, honyedew, watermelons); galia melons from Brazil are in excess, especially in the case of small sizes, and obtain weaker prices; very good prices for piel de sapo whose season starts later and is not readily available at present; the market is expected to improve and should then stabilize when the temperatures will drop further Passion fruit – The market is short due to limited availabilities in producing countries and is expected to remain undersupplied until

January; fruits from Ghana of medium quality have been on the market. Pineapple – Prices have considerably decreased and stand below average (6,00 Euro/ctn) since a couple of weeks but the market is quite irregular with lower prices (5,00 Euro/ctn) when big volumes are requested and higher quotations (above 7.00 Euro/ctn) when the product is scarcer. Sweet potato – The market is well supplied with the new arrivals from various sources (Egypt, Honduras, Israel). Grapes – The volumes of European grapes are still relevant; however, the supply from the Southern Hemisphere is increasing and diversifying from both Brazil (crimson, sugarone, thompson and the first red grapes) and Peru (white seedless varieties and red globe), with good sales especially for pre-packed fruits.

Pomegranate – Decreasing prices for the fruits from Egypt, Israel and Turkey as the supply from Spain became larger. Figs – With the end of the Mediterranean origins season, prices have considerably increased; figs from Turkey obtained particularly low prices this year as the season started earlier than usual and peaked when the demand was low. The demand is now stagnant. The campaign for citrus fruits is registering a slow start despite excellent quality because of big availabilities of Southern Hemisphere fruits; the season for apples and pears is in full development.
