The weekly catalogue for store cattle seems to be growing, with 270 reared and 70 strong stores entered in the catalogue prior to today. Just to remind everyone we will close the catalogue at 12 noon on the Friday prior to the Tuesday, any entries received after that point will go directly after the catalogued cattle in their various sections. The catalogue is especially useful for our buyers. Today one such buyer saw the catalogue online which persuaded him to visit the market and buy over 120 reared calves. The quality in the prime cattle was not up to normal standards, but prices were very good with all cattle in demand. Holstein Friesians were over 160p/kg this week and barren cows were rising again and topping over 170p/kg. The best quality butchers heifer achieved 229p/kg for Jane Turner of Ridlington with a nice British Blue. Ben had his biggest sale of reared calves of the year with all but one of the 303 entered being sold. James Webb of Billesdon topped at £1,100 for his Pedigree 12 month old Charolais Heifers, while Ian Nourish of Illston on the Hill sold Limousin Steers to £1,070. The 100 plus strong stores forward were topped by Mrs Brown of Houghton on the Hill with £1,190 for 20 month old British Blue Steers. Chris Hall of Ashbourne topped the heifers with an 18 month old Charolais at £1,045. Trade in Barrie Williamson’s calf ring showed no signs of letting up with 153 baby calves forward. Bulls topped at £470 and Heifers at £455. Tom reports a good number forward for the first annual show and sale of ewes with lambs at foot. With plenty of grass about, buyers were keen with quality couples really catching the eye. Congratulations to all of the prize winners. Some great consignments of ewes and lambs still to come with some real quality on offer over the next three weeks. Details will be posted on the market report. On a final note, congratulations to Simon Allam on his 60th birthday today and another staff member John Peet reaching his 70th birthday. Tim Webster ALAA, Market Manager
