Market dynamics – European market, week 39 (September 2013) Good weather at the beginning of the month but also cold weather in Central Europe has unfortunately contributed to keep demand low. While sales have not taken off as expected especially in wholesale markets, the marketing season of local productions is going to an end. The market is switching into the autumn products range; stocks of tropical and off- season fruits for the autumn winter season will be completely built up by the end of next month only. Avocado The market is proving difficult, volumes stand about 60% above the average and prices are tending down. The season from Peru and South Africa are finishing and will be almost over in week 40. Volumes from Kenya are taking place with arrivals above the average. Chile has entered the market and volumes will be significant from week 39 while arrivals from Mexico will develop in week 41-42. The market is expected to remain heavy until the end of the transition between suppliers (starting w 40). The first limited volumes of Israeli ettinger are on the market. Berries Imports from the Southern Hemisphere have started. Exports from Argentina began in week 39 and will peak in week 44-45 or late October-early November; although production volumes are smaller than last year because of winter frosts, export volumes to the major markets are expected to remain almost unchanged in comparison to last year (exports to Europe should therefore reach 4500 tons). Kiwi The first kiwis from Italy are being traded, so that the season for the Southern Hemisphere product, characterized this year by the extremely high prices for gold kiwifruit due to the spread of the PSA disease will be over soon. Prices are fluctuating as the season for the Southern Hemisphere fruits is coming to an end increasing about 1 Euro/ctn for fruits from New Zealand and, to a lesser extent, for those from Chile. Stocks will be available for another month. Limes Very low prices, very big volumes and falling demand for this product typical of the summer consumption; fruits from Brazil and Mexico are sold at 3,00-4,00 Euro/ctn, strongly below the average, with practically no price difference for the two different origins. Mango Prices are satisfactory having improved not because of an active demand but because the season of the Brazilian new crop has not developed yet. The price range is unusually quite big, varying considerably among different importers. Spain is on the market with the osteen variety and Israel with keith. Lychees Lychees from Spain are on the market. Melons The offer is still large; with the end of the summer season, demand is decreasing and prices too. The full range of melons from Brazil is on now the market. Pineapple After the low sales registered in summer, the demand was expected to improve with the end of the local fruit season; prices nevertheless continued stable and low for all sizes, facing stagnant demand and quality problems in some cases (too green fruits). Prices for top brands are just 1-2 Euro/ctn above the average now. Demand may get smarter in October, especially if the weather will be favorable. Fair and events (Macfrut in Italy in September and Fruit Attraction in Spain in October) are happening as usual in this period of the year giving the Southern Mediterranean countries/markets an important window for the commercialization of their products and into their markets.

Market dynamics – European market, week 39 (September

2013)

Good weather at the beginning of the month but also cold weather in Central Europe has unfortunately contributed to keep demand low. While sales have not taken off as expected especially in wholesale markets, the marketing season of local productions is going to an end. The market is switching into the autumn products range; stocks of tropical and off-season fruits for the autumn winter season will be completely built up by the end of next month only. Avocado – The market is proving difficult, volumes stand about 60% above the average and prices are tending down. Berries – Imports from the Southern Hemisphere have started. Kiwi – The first kiwis from Italy are being traded, so that the season for the Southern Hemisphere product, characterized this year by the extremely high prices for gold kiwifruit due to the spread of the PSA disease will be over soon. Prices are fluctuating as the season for the Southern Hemisphere fruits is coming to an end increasing about 1 Euro/ctn for fruits from New

Zealand and, to a lesser extent, for those from Chile. Stocks will be available for another month. Limes – Very low prices, very big volumes and falling demand for this product typical of the summer consumption; fruits from Brazil and Mexico are sold at 3,00-4,00 Euro/ctn, strongly below the average, with practically no price difference for the two different origins. Mango – Prices are satisfactory having improved not because of an active demand but because the season of the Brazilian new crop has not developed yet. The price range is unusually quite big, varying considerably among different importers. Spain is on the market with the osteen variety and Israel with keith. Lychees – Lychees from Spain are on the market. Melons – The offer is still large; with the end of the summer season, demand is decreasing and prices too. The full range of melons from Brazil is on now the market. Pineapple – After the low sales registered in summer, the demand was expected to improve with the end of the local fruit season; prices nevertheless continued stable and low for all sizes, facing stagnant demand and quality problems in some cases (too green fruits).

Market Insider Tropical and Off-Season Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Market dynamics – European market, week 35 (August 2013)

Demand is low due to the summer holidays and the general economic trend; sales are favourable for few items, mostly for local season products such as nectarines and apricots in particular. The marketing season for stone fruits is satisfactory, with prices better than last year even though lower than in July as the campaign has fully developed. Schools have started only in some parts of Europe so that a return to full market activity is expected in the coming weeks. Avocado – Although arrivals of Hass have remained quite high compared to the average, the European market is showing a good balance. Prices have been stable and firm in particular in the Northern markets. Prices of green varieties are higher than the prices of Hass and above the average (decreasing season for South Africa). With Chile entering the market in week 37 the supply pressure is expected to increase. Figs – The season of figs from Turkey is fully developing, with large price variability depending on sizes. Ginger – Prices continues high and are expected to increase further. Mango – The market is calm with prices just on average since some weeks. Israel entered the market with sea-freighted volumes and production is said to be 30-40% lower on last season. Spain will soon enter the market with normal volumes or, possibly, up on last season. Demand should starting kicking in September when the summer fruit supplies get lower; weather conditions could also create more demand if the temperatures drop in Europe. Supply is expected to increase. Pommegranate – The season for Egypt and Israel started about four weeks earlier in comparison to last year.

Pineapple – Very high prices for sizes 5-6’, exceeding 11,00 Euro/ctn, with large price range depending on the market considered; very low prices for small sizes, sometimes sold below 4,00-5,00 Euro/ctn or just in consignment. Prices for top brands are expected to reach 15,00 Euro/ctn in week 36. Limes – Very high prices for limes from both Brazil and Mexico (12,00-13,00 Euro/ctn) with prices differing considerably depending on the market considered; demand is expected to decrease with the end of the summer season. Lychees – The season from Israel is coming to an end, some batches from China. Melons - The first Brazilian yellow melons were

unloaded despite there is still a good supply of

yellow melons from Spain. Galia, Cantaloupe

and water melons from Brazil are expected in

week 36/37.

The first forecasts on deciduous fruit indicate that production should increase about (+7%) for apples and (+18%) for pears. As the season is about one month late because of the weather, stocks of the Southern Hemisphere fruits should be fully cleared by then. September looks difficult, in part because demand usually delays in re-taking shape after summer and also because the season for local products will stick for at least another 3-4 weeks until all stocks of local season fruits will be cleared.
