Mooresville Christian Mission

The Mooresville Christian Mission has some immediate needs:

Instant Potatoes

Dry Pasta & Sauce

Mac & Cheese

Hamburger Helper

Beverages

Items may be dropped off directly to the Christian Mission, 266 N. Broad Street, Mooresville, Tuesday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Please note they are not taking clothing or household items at this time.

Christian Symbols Willow

The billowing branches of the “weeping willow” symbolize mourning, especially of the Israelites as they endured captivity. The willow, which grows well in marshy areas, is associated in the Bible with fruitful, well-watered land (see Ezekiel 17:5). In descriptions of Old Testament festivals of praise, God’s people were told “to take branches from luxuriant trees — from palms, willows and other leafy trees — and rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days” (Leviticus 23:40, NIV).

Patient Attention, Valuable Discoveries

For many people, the coronavirus pandemic has been a test of patience — or worse. Medically vulnerable people face an anxious time of hypervigilance. Furloughed workers wait on hold or in lines for assistance. Special events have been canceled or rescheduled.

Those not impacted directly deal with assorted frustrations and inconveniences. Many people are learning the benefit of slowing down, being present (even virtually) to others and practicing patient attention.

Interestingly, scientist Isaac Newton did some of his best work when the plague forced Cambridge University to close. At home, the inquisitive student invented calculus and developed groundbreaking theories of gravity and optics. Later Newton called 1666 his annus mirabilis (“year of wonders”) and reportedly said, “If I have made any valuable discoveries, it [owes] more to patient attention than to any other talent.”

What have you discovered during the Covid-19 crisis? What appreciations have you developed for aspects of life you may have previously taken for granted? What has social distancing taught you about the value of neighbors, church, community volunteering? Let us know, send a message to [email protected]. You can remain anonymous if you want, please indicate that on your response.

During the pandemic, what have you learned about persistence and God’s presence? What empathy do you now feel for writers of words such as “I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope” (Psalm 130:5, NIV)

Attendance Figures

The attendance figures for this month are based on the numbers the NC Synod has requested. To obtain online worship attendance we are taking the number of devices connected to each livestreamed service plus the number of views or downloads of a recorded service during the seven days following the service and multiply that sum by 2. Thanks to Kate Warren for her assistance in obtaining these numbers.

From the Council President

I have been reading a lot about anchors lately in my Biblical devotions and studies. Maybe it is because we are in the midst of summer, or maybe it’s because we feel like we need to have an anchor to weather the torrential storms of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whatever it is, it has got me thinking about where St. Mark’s anchors are set. We have had to endure a lot of change these past months – switching from in-person worship to live stream worship, dealing with moisture issues around the buildings, applying for a PPP loan for the Preschool and church, moving of the Memorial Garden and the creation of a columbarium,

considering whether or not to open the Preschool this fall and what safe guards are needed, mulling over new policy, procedures and guidelines that will eventually enable us to open the office and come back together in person and so… much… more. Being a part of St. Mark’s Council during this year has been a blessing. I know what you are thinking. Yeah, right! But I mean it. We have had to make a lot of difficult decisions this year and at times it has been very trying. But I also have never felt more Spirit led. Our Council team will continue to work hard for you. Please know that each decision we make is made through prayer and asking God to help and guide us. So, I have decided that I am going to continue to tie my anchor to the Cross of Jesus. Where will you cast your anchor? In Christ, Sandie Lown, St. Mark’s Council President P.S. Chris, Amy, John and I will be rotating off of Council this coming December. If you are interested in running for Council for next year, please contact David Wagoner; [email protected] or 704-302-3301. If you have any questions regarding what being on Council entails, please contact me; [email protected] or 704-658-7639. I would love to have a conversation with you.

Let’s get a JUMP START on supporting our Backpack children at Park View School! It seems school just got out, but the 2020-21 school year will hopefully be starting soon.

The need is as great or greater then ten years ago when the program began. Social ministry depends on the caring hearts of our congregation to support FOOD FOR DAYS MINISTRY. We have heard many stor ies of how the children depend on this food to get through the weekend. This problem is not going away. In Iredell County we have over 400 students that have NO ADDRESS.

HANDS On Hands Are Needed for Devoted Service

Despite Covid, the HANDS group has not slowed down. If anything, they've only gotten busier - especially as they start to prepare for fall and winter. We are thankful for HANDS On members, church members and friends for donating their time & materials; Marsha Rhyne’s mom, Clara, for fabric, Ruth Beeston for measuring tapes that are very handy when making our fleece blankets, Elizabeth Arthurs for fabric and Linda Sinclair, someone I have not met, but she called and offered her fabric. We are busy making masks for the MGSD (Mooresville Graded School District). We will be delivering the masks to them on or before August 17th, and are trying to make as many as possible. They have asked for 300, but feel confident we will have more! We continue to make fleece scarves for winter, and are focusing on having scarves for the Pink Pig Out Food truck that delivers a lunch meal every Sunday for those in need. They distribute these meals in the parking lot of Park View Elementary, and we will also be there this winter to distribute scarves. Priscilla Abraham has faithfully continued to supply Dave Finger with everything he needs for our bandage project. She delivers sheets to Dave, and then he prepares the sheets for them to be rolled into bandages. We will deliver hygiene items to Living Waters Lutheran Church in early August. A couple of ladies are continuing to crochet plastic sleeping mats. Stay tuned for a tutorial video on this in case you would like to help as well! And, we're also having discussions with a group that visits and supports the homeless. We're trying to see what they may need, and hopefully we can supply them with blankets, scarves, blessing bags. etc. We should know more in the next few weeks. TO OUR LIVESTREAM WORSHIP SERVANTS

Our first livestream worship service was on March 15 of this year. Pastor Dave was out of the country on vacation the preceding week and arrived back in Mooresville late Saturday evening to discover we had put together our first ever livestream worship service. We met with Pastor Dave two hours before worship, made some changes, and prayed together. And thanks be to God, we pulled it off with the able help of technicians Susan Bostian, Chris Gilligan, Jody Tyree, and Kate Warren. It was an amazing day—our first livestream worship. We certainly appreciate the patience of those who’ve worshiped with us from home and appreciate your kind comments throughout this learning process. With COVID still limiting our on-site human resources for worship, especially no choirs or lectors, we have musicians who have graciously volunteered to help lead livestream worship each week and many people who have agreed to make videos of the weekly readings, Lenten / Holy Week monologues, and children’s videos. We offer a very special thank you to everyone who has continue to share their time and talents during this time. If I failed to mention anyone who has helped with this please let me know so we can properly thank you.

Musicians: Mitch Abraham, Mindy Arndt, Tony Arndt, Jim Chelgren, Amy Elkin, Ethan Kraft, Cindy LeBaron, Mike LeBaron, Jim Lown, Caroline Tyree, Catherine Tyree, Jody Tyree, Nancy Tyree, and our staff musicians Priscilla Abraham, Pastor Dave Keck, Robbie Pearson

Videos: Cailynn Abraham, Napoleon Avery, Caelyn Carlson, Pam Core, Amy Elkin, Bill Elkin, Glenn Feiste, Jeremy and Megan Ferden, Judy Fletcher, Amy Gilligan, Chris Gilligan, Sharon Gombotz, Bill Horiszny, Jenny Horton, The Johnson Children (Jadyn, Tyler, and Jovey), Alison Joy, Madison Joy, John Kline, Allison Kraft, Wyatt Kraft, Cindy LeBaron, Mike LeBaron, Leslie Leonard, Sandie Lown, Stephanie Mattingly, The Mays (Bart, Tonya, Jaxon, and Brooklyn), The McCann's (Martin, Paige, Mara), Braley McCoy, Nathan McCoy, Jimmy McLean, Kathy Jo McLean, Jim McNabb, Liz McNabb, James and Betty Meadows, Jimmy Meadows, Lori Monterose, Tommy Monterose, Julie Nottestad, Woody Parker, Marsha Rhyne, Robert Rhyne, Debbie Rice, Mark Ridenhour, Jeff Shoe, Steve Shoe (deceased), Allen Sloop, Stan Suther, Liam Tulbert, Lynn Wenger

Video Editors: Alison Joy (children’s videos) and Jody Tyree (all worship videos and pre-recorded anthems)

We highlighted our tech team a few months ago, but we now have several new volunteers we want to welcome and thank: Darren Jones and Elliot Jones who have run both sound and uploaded the livestream to Facebook; Travis Thornsberry is not a St. Mark’s member, but has very graciously been volunteering his time to run the camera.

AUGUST WORSHIP

August 2—Get your fish and loaves of bread ready. We’re going to feast with Jesus and at least 5000 of his closest friends.

August 9—In 1 Kings 19 Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. In Matthew 14 Jesus walks on water to reach the disciples. Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears, just as Jesus calmed the storm and the fears of Peter. Solo—Lauren Hatch, “Oceans”

August 16—Guest Preacher, The Rev. Molly Markley Kuekes.

August 23—God reveals to Peter that Jesus is “the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” and Jesus declares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter’s bold confession of faith.

August 30—Jesus tells his disciples they must deny themselves, take up his cross and follow him. Handbell Trio—Mindy Arndt, Margaret Gooden, and Allison Kraft

LIVESTREAM UPDATE

Worship Music and Arts and Communications and Technology Committees are working together to improve our livestream worship and to be able to continue providing a livestream of our regular in-person worship when we’re able to meet again. We sometimes have to look hard to find even a sliver of silver lining in something as unexpected and life-changing as COVID has been. We had talked about offering livestream worship but had not moved forward for multiple reasons. After being pushed into making it happen we realize what a blessing it’s been to continue worship during these times, to provide worship for people who were already physically unable to attend church, and to share the gospel with more viewers who are watching from other states and from Mexico. Thanks be to God!

Precision-Crafted by the Master

All around us, miracles happen and God empowers life, thanks to exacting conditions. We know of caterpillars and butterflies, but did you know about these details shared by Gayle Boss in Wild Hope (Paraclete)?

“For about a month each female [monarch butterfly] plants four hundred or so eggs. … Ninety-nine in a hundred … perish. But on the third day, from the one remaining, a caterpillar the size of a rice grain breaks.

“She devours the egg casing, then the milkweed leaves beneath her feet. In those leaves is a steroid that makes her body brightly striped — and toxic to her predators. Ravenous, she eats milkweed unceasingly for twelve days, bulging her skin to splitting. Five skins later, two thousand times her birthweight, she stops.

“Crawling to a suitable twig or ledge, she hangs head down, shaping herself into a question mark. One last time her skin falls away. This new one is not a soft, stripy, caterpillar skin but a polished, jade-green shell studded with a gold tiara.

“Because she is enclosed and still, changes that had already begun within her wormlike body erupt outward. Wings! Long, delicate legs! After twelve days in the chrysalis she is a new creature.” Praise God!
