AEROSPACE

We provide an array of equipment and systems for fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. We’re experts in the field of air traffic management services. And we lead the way in terms of sophisticated onboard systems and full-flight training simulators.

In fact, some 80% of the world’s pilots have been trained on a Thales synthetic training device. What’s more, we count some of the world’s major airlines amongst our customers and work with manufacturers on truly groundbreaking projects, from the A400M and A350 to the Sukhoi Superjet 100 and the B787. In all, our

global network supports 1,200 operators worldwide with a full range of service solutions.

Our range of connected airborne solutions allow passengers to use cellular phones and the internet aboard civil aircraft. So the next time you log onto Facebook during a flight, you’ll have our technology to thank. Equally, if you’re enjoying a movie at 35,000 feet, chances are you’ll be watching it on one of our inflight entertainment systems, as they’re installed on more types of aircraft than any other.

“THE LARGE SCALE TECHNOLOGY IN SIMULATION PROVIDES A LOT OF EXPERIENCE AND IS VERY INTERESTING. ANYONE CAN BUILD AN APP AT HOME BUT YOU CAN’T BUILD A COMPLEX SIMULATOR!”

OPPORTUNITY TO BE HANDS ON FROM AN EARLY STAGEI joined Thales as an intern through a scholarship at university. I had studied practical subjects as I wanted to be more hands on and apply my knowledge to something tangible.

PEOPLE LIVE THE THALES CULTUREI am part of a team of six that is designing, developing and testing software for full flight mission simulators, this is part of an upgrade for the ARH Tiger Helicopter simulator. The culture in the Avionics group is fantastic, there are a lot of professional individuals who are always willing to assist me with my development.

UNIQUE WORK OPPORTUNITIESThe uniqueness of the work we do at Thales cannot be experienced anywhere else. This role has really opened my eyes to what I could do within the Defence Engineering sector. There are plenty of opportunities to develop and grow which opens up many avenues for me further on in my career.

FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIESI am currently building my technical experience and knowledge within the Training and Simulation sector before looking for my next step. The large scale technology in simulation provides a lot of immersion and is very interesting. Anyone can build an app at home but you can’t build a complex simulator!

DEFENCE

Thales in Australia supplies and sustains a range of products for the ADF including: munitions, weapons, optronics, protected vehicles, mission packages, and command, control, communications and computer (C4) systems.

Through our industrial resources and long-term contracts with the Commonwealth, we are the custodian of much of Australia’s indigenous defence design, manufacturing, through life management and logistic services capabilities for munitions, rifles and vehicles.

Thales has a proud history of producing protective vehicles in Bendigo Victoria including the 12 person troop carrier Bushmaster and the 5 person light armoured vehicle Hawkei.

Bushmaster is combat proven and has been successfully deployed by three armies on operations in the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific; On-going enhancement and mature through life support ensure that Bushmaster continues to meet changing requirements.

Hawkei is a 7-tonne, 4x4, new generation protected vehicle with a 3-tonne payload, designed to meet the demanding requirements of land forces world-wide.

“I HAVE AN IN DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE DIFFERENT GROUPS WORKING TOGETHER TO DELIVER A PRODUCT AND HAVE BUILT PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE WITH A WIDE RANGE OF BACKGROUNDS AND EXPERIENCE.”

CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT Thales has balanced my career development and the immediate needs of the business by placing me in roles which I am interested in, and find challenging, ensuring I am an engaged and valuable employee.

INTERESTING WORK The opportunity to work on a developing production line is not common and has meant my ideas and suggestions are taken seriously and often are used to make a significant impact to the efficiencies of the Hawkei build.

EVERY DAY IS A NEW DAY I have had many opportunities to try new experiences and solve new problems which has made for a steep, but rewarding, learning curve. This is something that I was hoping to find when coming into a workplace.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIESThe roles I have been placed into have all allowed me to take responsibility of the work I have done. I was granted a strong support network in the form of a team and a manager, so that I never felt out of my depth.

MARITIME

Thales in Australia also enjoys a long and proud history with the Royal Australian Navy having designed and delivered a variety of solutions in both the underwater and above water domains.

The company operates the RAN’s major east coast refit, repair and maintenance facilities at Garden Island, NSW, and is the leading provider of communication systems to the RAN. For more than two decades, Thales in Australia has been supplying advanced sonar systems to naval and civil customers in Australia and overseas.

Thales’s comprehensive offering encompasses capabilities from complete warships to the supply and integration of naval equipment (radar, sonar, communications, optronic and electronic warfare), systems (combat management systems) and support services.

“NO TWO DAYS ARE THE SAME AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE TO WORK IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE BUSINESS WORLDWIDE.”

CONTINUED DEVELOPMENTI have been mentored throughout my time in Thales by many experienced and forthcomingEngineers, who always have the time to walk you through a problem when help is needed.

INTERESTING WORKI had the privilege of undertaking the overmoulding of a Collins-class submarine Intercept Array. This is a torpedo-detection sonar aboard our Australian submarines and it was the first time this activity had been undertaken in Australia.

EVERY DAY IS A NEW DAY Seeing the importance of the work we do in supporting the Royal Australian Navy gives me the motivation to continue their leading development of sonar systems. Thales allows you the opportunity to make mistakes as a graduate and learn from them, under the guidance of the experienced engineers around you.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIESI am currently undertaking a secondment to the Thales’ Glasgow facility. In Scotland, Thales design and manufacture sighting systems for armoured vehicles and pericopes for submarines. It has certainly been an eye opener thus far!

SECURITY

Our expertise is unsurpassed in designing and supplying critical systems for promoting the safety and security of people, places and sensitive information. We developed TEOPAD, the only mobile security solution that preserves the capacity of smartphones and tablets to host applications, allowing employees and companies to separate professional and personal environments.

Together, we work closely with our customers to define the future needs of homeland security and the protection of critical

national infrastructure. We design, develop and deploy secure communication systems, encryption technology, command and control systems and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear solutions. Our key offerings are based around National Security and Resilience, Counter Terrorism and Information Assurance. For example, our proven expertise in secure network communications safeguards as many as 3.7 billion financial transactions every year.
