INTRODUCTION
After three well succeeded editions in the city of Santos, attended by hundreds ofdelegates and counting with the participation of recognized Brazilian and foreignlecturers, the MARTIIME CONFERENCE – RIO 2011 will take place on 23thNovember 2011 at the Windsor Atlantica Hotel.
OBJECTIVE
Organized for the first time in Rio de Janeiro, the event aims at discussing projects,legislation, environment and operational aspects, loss prevention and themitigation of problems that involve the sectors linked to shipping and offshoreactivities.
The MARITIME CONFERENCE - RIO 2011 will explore the expansion of the Oil &Gas sector in Brazil, the growth of the Brazilian Ship Yard industry with theGas sector in Brazil, the growth of the Brazilian Ship Yard industry with theambitious expansion projects of the national fleet and the port infrastructure, themaritime legislation and future opportunities.
ORGANIZATION
The event is an initiative of BRAZIL P&I, which has accumulated vast experience and tradition as P&I correspondents and shipping consultants in Brazil.

agents, P&I Clubs, insurance companies, brokers, lawyers, salvage companies,
surveyors and other players from the shipping community.

the Brazilian shipowners syndicate (SYNDARMA), the State of Rio de Janeiro
shipping agents syndicate (SINDARIO) and the Brazilian maritime lawyers

whole day.
The following topics, defined from research attended by the maritime community
as the most relevant at the moment, will be debated.
DEVELOPMENT OF MARITIME NAVIGATION AND OFFSHORE IN BRAZIL

As Brazil vigorously recovers the growth of its maritime navigation and offshore
support, the opportunities arose from the pre-salt exploration and the economic
development of the country and opens new chances to shipping companies,
shipyards and service providers in general, generating jobs and strengthening this
important sector.
The ANTAQ, the agency responsible to regulate the maritime transport, is invited to

CENTENARY OF THE PORT OF RIO DE JANEIRO – PLANNING THE FUTURE

The port of Rio de Janeiro, currently celebrating its centenary, has approximately
7,6 kilometers of linear quay/pier and the forecasts indicate that the volume of
cargo should grow from the actual 9 million to 25 million tons.
The Port Authority will elaborate about the historic centenary as well as the
revitalization of the port, which consists of joint work by the municipal, state and
federal governments, one of the main topics of the hosting agreements for the federal governments, one of the main topics of the hosting agreements for the
2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games.
It will also provide a future vision of the port of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the
relevant investments foreseen for the next years, coming either from the private
sector and the government, thru PAC and PAC2 development programs.

The offshore activities in Brazil date back to late seventies, a period in which
Petrobras began oil and gas exploration at sea. The incipient infrastructure to
support the new activity at the time, contrasts with its current force.
The remarkable growth of this segment in the national economy, initially aimed at

appearance but also the strong business expansion in the sector, with record
investment in the entire chain of production in contention for the growing number
of orders. This scenario of strong growth and opportunities will be scrutinized by
market professionals, backed by consideration and analysis.

The challenge of training merchant marine officers, who will attend the new ships
being built in the Brazilian shipyards or that will be chartered on bareboat basis, to
meet the demands of national economy and in particular the offshore sector, has

Forecasts indicate a shortage of officers in the near future, in case the volume of
new cadets, in comparison to fleet expansion, is maintained.
A view of the situation, focusing on current concerns and solutions will be offered
by the panelists.
