Soak it Up 100% Pure New Zealand Rugby Tour April 2014

WELCOMEIt is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome Marist CollegeCanberra to New Zealand. It is the game of rugby that has brought us together andTotal Rugby will ensure that you will experience the very best of New Zealands rugbyculture. Welcome, Haere Mai, and enjoy your stay.

INTRODUCTORY NOTESWeather: April is autumn weather, which means it can be very changeable.Temperatures can fluctuate wildly, from high 20s / low 30s to almost single figures. However, the average should be about 16 degrees Celsius.

Grounds: Grounds will be in good condition without the winter rains. If weather iswarm they could be very hard. Multi-studded boots should be adequate for backs (noguarantee), but are unlikely to provide adequate traction for tight forwards. Mediumlength studs recommended

Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is common

practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This ismeant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish.Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and front

up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed at the end of thematch and players shake hands with the opposition.

Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand. Theref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.

First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial first aidis generally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergency servicesare available for more serious injuries. (Note: There is an ambulance and first aidstaff at the festival) The emergency number in New Zealand is 111. There areafterhours medical services available in all main centres. ACC (Accident CompensationCommission) covers most of the cost if it is an accident - there will be a surcharge.Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services including physiotherapy. Itis expected that tour groups will have their own travel insurance to cover medicalexpenses. Operators of tourist services have their own policies regarding health andsafety and issues arising should be managed directly with them. Ice should be part ofyour first aid kit. Ice is available from service (fuel) stations, corner stores andsupermarkets.

Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make anearly request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source arange of gear.

Laundry: Coin operated laundry available at Tanoa Aspen Hotel. Terrace Downs villasinclude laundry facilities for your use. St Andrews College boarding hostel has a fulllaundry facility, staff will explain how to operate.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary.Breakfasts will all be at your accommodation and are continental (typically cereal,

toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches are packed and are provided at youraccommodation to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners at youraccommodation are two course (main course and dessert) or buffet style.

Security/valuables: This is your own responsibility. Valuables have been stolen before. Please never assume that it will be okay to leave valuables unattended or gear roomsunlocked. Every attempt will be made to assist you with your own security.

Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phonenumbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your activities butwe will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss the days eventsand go over the next day, or in the morning.

Luggage: Due to coach luggage capacity it is requested that each person is limited toone suitcase and one carry-on bag. If your luggage is going to exceed this pleaseadvise Total Rugby prior to your arrival.

Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your flightplease complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with care andensure rugby boots are clean prior to your departure.

Festival Information:Powhiri- Please be earlyand assemble in front of the main school building. You will

need to wear your No 1s. This is a traditional Maori welcome and as such hakas willbe performed. As a reply most of the New Zealand schools will perform their schoolhaka.
