Agriculture leads the way to economic stability

In spite of the national recession experienced over the past several years, indicators point to a return of economic stability for most of rural Kansas including Hillsboro and the surrounding community. An influencing factor has

been the agricultural sector. Advanced farming practices have resulted in high crop yields. In addition, worldwide demand has resulted in record commodity prices which provide needed cash flow for continued growth. A ripple effect has been beneficial for the local commercial and retail community as well. For example, Hillsboro’s sales tax receipts have reached record levels this past year; property valuation has also increased due to new construction of homes and businesses. As you read the following articles giving an overview of recent economic development activities in Hillsboro, we believe you will share our optimism as we anticipate further recovery in 2012!

Marion County named a Rural Opportunity Zone

Young families are beginning to realize that opportunities do exist in rural Kansas. In recent years, many of the brightest and best were leaving their rural communities for greener pastures. However, improved internet access is allowing all of

us to be competitive on state, national and global levels.

In 2010, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback introduced Rural Opportunity Zones (ROZs) as a way of attracting people to Kansas. The new initiative offers two incentives: an exemption from state income tax for five years for individuals who

relocate from out of state, and a state-matching program for counties to repay student loans up to $15,000 for qualifying individuals moving to a ROZ county.

We have already seen a small influx of people choosing to make Hillsboro their home. The latest census shows Hillsboro having a 5.4% increase in population, many of whom are young families.

It cannot be over emphasized that rural communities must be attractive in order to attract; quality of life issues are of primary concern. Those who choose to live in a small town do so because of perceived benefits beyond the paycheck.

Things like quality daycare, schools, churches, recreation and housing are often deciding factors all of which are available in Hillsboro.

David and Sue Baker

have local roots both

graduating from Hillsboro

High School. After

leaving town to attend

college, they decided

to return because of a

business opportunity and their love for

the community. David, Sue and their

two children live on a small acreage

near Hillsboro. They are now partners

in Baker Bros. Printing Co, a family

business located at 113 South Main, in

Hillsboro.

Bryce Wichert

and Sara Wichert

along with their

2 boys make their home in Hillsboro. They

came here from out of state to attend

Tabor College where they met. Following

graduation Bryce and Sara chose to stay in

Hillsboro because “it is a great place to raise

a family and begin a career.” Bryce is a CPA

and owns Accounting + Financial Initiative

LLC located at 104 East First, Hillsboro, KS.

Brent and Jamie Driggers and their four children recently moved to Hillsboro from the Kansas City area. Brent is co-founder of Jetset Media which produces digital advertising displayed in airports and has the freedom to work from his home office. Brent states, “We chose to move here because Hillsboro is a progressive town offering an outstanding educational system for our children and a great quality of life for our entire family.”

A new family friendly piece of playground

equipment was recently added to the Hillsboro

Memorial Park. This aparatus was made possible

by community fundraising efforts. It is receiving

much use from local families who enjoy the park.

The Hillsboro (Entrepreneurial) E-Community program has been instrumental in assisting four business start-ups and two business expansions in the past two years. Teaming up with Hillsboro Ventures Inc., Hillsboro E-Community

is able to help entrepreneurs with writing business plans, secure low interest loans and find suitable facilities to develop their businesses. Individuals considering a business start-up or a business expansion should contact Clint Seibel, Executive Director of HDC/HVI, 166 East Grand, Hillsboro, KS 67063.

Marie Kessler, owner/operator

of Kessler Kreations had the vision to grow her machine quilting business but was limited due to space. By working together with Hillsboro Ventures Inc., and the Kansas Small Business Development Center Marie was able to secure a large Main Street facility with excellent visibility. She produces approximately 300 quilts per year and has a fabric inventory of more than 1300 bolts. In addition, Kessler Kreations offers sewing and hand quilting classes and features approximately 30 consignors in her store.

Partnering with Jan’s Floral Designs

The facility is large enough to accommodate a floral shop called Jan’s Floral Designs. Jan is a certified florist offering floral service for weddings, funerals,

anniversaries and other special events. She also serves the community as a rental shop for various items including candelabras and tuxedos.

Local businesses were nominated by HDC to be recognized by the Kansas Department of Commerce for outstanding service to the Hillsboro community. Lyle Peterson, Regional Manager from KDOC presented

the awards to three Hillsboro businesses at a monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting. Hillsboro businesses have a major impact on the economic climate of our region. HDC/HVI has been active in supporting businesses by providing business planning, low interest loans, customer service seminars as well as marketing and promotion of the our community. Hillsboro Main Street presently enjoys 95% occupancy with additional business activity in our highway commercial developments and the Hillsboro Industrial Park.

Jost Welding, radiator and machine

Jost Welding, Radiator and Machine is a 3 generation family business originally know as Jost General Blacksmith Shop.

Through the years they have continually reinvented themselves to the meet the changing needs of the consumer. Todd Jost, third generation owner/operator, has added a CNC 3 axis vertical machine center allowing him to compete in the current market. Jost is now teaching his son the business in hopes of serving the Hillsboro community for many years to come.

Midway Motors of Hillsboro

Hillsboro’s GM Dealership was purchased by Midway Motors, a family owned business having

auto dealerships in McPherson, Hutchinson and now in Hillsboro. They immediately relocated the business to the newly developed Hillsboro Business Park on US HWY 56 and Ash Street. Construction of their new $1,000,000 facility which includes a seven bay service center and lighted auto display area was completed in January 2011. The presence of a new auto dealership provides a strong sense of economic stability for the Hillsboro community.

The Hillsboro Development Corporation nominates local businesses for business awards

Sonic Drive in of Hillsboro

In 1999 Hillsboro became home to one of SONIC’s 3,500 drive-ins located across the nation. Sonic Drive-

In of Hillsboro was one of the first businesses to locate in the newly established Hillsboro Heights Addition, Hwy #56 and Orchard Drive. Recently they invested in an exterior make over for a total cost of $150,000. Hillsboro’s Sonic serves the local public as well as the many people spending time at the Marion County Reservoir, which is only 3 miles from Hillsboro.

Kessler Kreations expands and partners with other local businesses

Tangles opens beauty salon in Hillsboro

Alison Schultz and Jessica Platz have worked together in their beauty salon for a number of years. Because they were outgrowing their facilities, the

decision was made to expand the business and move to a new location. Working together with the Hillsboro E-Community, Alison was able to purchase a Main Street location and complete a remodeling project. The new expanded business was renamed “Tangles” and features 4 styling stations, 3 hair washing stations and 2 pedicure chairs. Plans include the addition of tanning services at a future date.

Posing in their new location, Platz, seated and Schultz are excited about their business future in Hillsboro.
