Meetings

Fall 2014

The fall 2014 meeting was held at the beautiful Nile Shrine Country Club on October 23. Dr. James

Joslin presented “Development of an Adaptable Monitoring Package for Marine Renewable Energy.”

This tidal energy environmental monitoring prototype was developed by UW-APL as a precursor for the

Snohomish County Public Utility Tidal Energy Project planned for installation in Admiralty Inlet. Among

other applications, the prototype is intended to measure the environmental impact of turbines on marine

life and vegetation.

An Appeal for Volunteers:

Lorie Burleigh has graciously served as our Secretary/Treasurer for the last five years. She has quietly

requested that another MSEA “volunteer” assume that role for the next shift. If you feel you could devote a

little time to help keep this wonderful luncheon tradition and fantastic organization running, your

volunteering for this position would be deeply appreciated.

Larry Armbruster is stepping up to take the MSEA Presidency for the next year. As always, we seek

another “volunteer” to serve as Larry’s Vice President and who will assume the role of President for the

following year. Again anyone willing to so serve would be most welcomed.

Member News Carla Abrahamsen, daughter of our beloved “Skipper” Carl Abrahamsen (1927-2002) donated several

boxes of memorabilia Carl had collected over the years piloting our working vessels. The memorabilia

will be on display at our upcoming spring luncheon.

Sandra “Moraski” married Lt. Gen Jerome Hilmes on September 23 on the beach in Kauai Hawaii.

Sandra has known the general for over 50 years. He was a class mate of Lee Moraski and was also in the

Corp of Engineers. Her new mailing address will be 4900 Windsor Park, Sarasota, FL 34235-2609.

Congratulations!

Norm Gillespie reports that life is good for Pat and him in beautiful San Diego but the area could use

some rain. Norm had a wonderful family time in July—with visits from son and grandson from Dubai and

grandson from Menlo Park, CA. Norm has great memories of his time with Honeywell, working for

Dick Stockman in San Diego and in Seattle on Dynasoar and the Mine Neutralization System. He hopes

to make it up for an MSEA luncheon sometime.

Ken and Mary Lou Prentiss attended one more Jazz Festival at Sun Valley, Idaho last October and

another Caribbean Jazz Cruise last January. Their jazz interest was inspired by Dan Witmer’s clarinet and

the Puget Sound Traditional Jazz Society, 30 some years ago.

Ray and Chery Castor missed our fall meeting because they were in Japan and China. Ray is still

working one day per week at Leidos (spin-off of SAIC). They enjoy their 8 grand kids and cruising on

the boat. The Castor’s now have a cabin on the Prince of Wales Island in Alaska where the fishing

crabbing and shrimping is excellent. Door is open! Life is good!

Linda Doyle, a new MSEA member, is currently working at a large downtown Everett church. It started

as a part time job and evolved into a full time office manager position. Linda just celebrated her 30th

wedding anniversary and is thoroughly enjoying being a grandmother to her 18 month granddaughter.

Sympathy Extended Robert Huelsdonk, 83, died November 24, 2014 at his home. Bob often “commuted” from the family

Huelsdonk Homestead Ranch in the Hoh Valley on the Olympic Peninsula to work during the week at the

Honeywell facility in Ballard. He is remembered as an early pioneer in the application of the desktop

computing in the Honeywell workplace.

George Paul Marchand passed away on February 12, 2015 at home with his family. He spent four years

in the Navy, settled in Puget Sound while getting an EE degree from Seattle University. George worked

for Honeywell Marine Systems Division in Seattle for 35 years. When he retired, he and his wife,

Geraldine, moved to Camano Island but still kept in close touch with his large extended family.

Harry G Galland, Jr. died March 5, 2015. His wife, Colleen, preceded him in death. After graduating

from Ballard High School in 1944, he joined the Navy. He served stateside during World War II and

upon leaving the Navy, he went through electronics school in California. He worked for Boeing and

Honeywell in Seattle.

Leonard Sam (Lenny) Patricelli passed away on January 24, 2015 at 72. He attended the University of

Washington and was a veteran of the Army reserves. A family man extraordinaire, he also found time for

football and golf. He worked for Honeywell and Hughes and retired from Alliant Tech Systems in 2002.

Doris Storm (wife of Keith) passed away on 7 January, 2015. Doris and Keith Storm were married for

64 years and had two daughters, and three grandchildren. Keith was a long-time accounting supervisor for

Honeywell.

Barbara J Bader (nee Blake), beloved wife of John Bader, passed away January 31 at 84. Barbara

attended St. Catherine’s in St. Paul, Minnesota where she met John. John was commissioned in 1952 and

was serving on the USS Chilton when they were married. They had four sons and survived fourteen

moves during their marriage. From San Diego, they came to Seattle in 1972 when John joined

Honeywell. Barbara was an avid ancestry researcher with Curt Roselle and George Marchand. As a

matter-of-fact, she discovered that George was a distant relative.
