Learn from OceanFit’s expert ocean swimming instructors how to keep your family safe in the waves this summer.

This activity brings parent and child together in a combined learning experience. If you are the parent, this introductory clinic will instil confidence in your ability to instruct your children at the beach. You’ll learn about assessing ocean conditions, how to teach core ocean safety skills and how to ensure your child grows up to love the ocean and not be overcome by fear and anxiety.

If you are the child, you’ll have the best fun learning with your parent on how to stay safe in the ocean, dive under waves and how to body surf!

Coogee coastal walk and talk$5 PER PERSON

This is a rare opportunity to join Australia’s leading coastal scientist, Professor Bruce Thom as he uncovers the secrets of Sydney’s coast as you stroll along the coastal walkway between Coogee Beach and Lurline Bay.

The tour starts at Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club, founded in 1907 and will take you along the popular eastern beaches Coastal Walkway to Ivor Rowe Rockpool.

Be prepared to go off-track while learning about the geological wonders of the area and finding out about the relationship between Sydney’s beaches and Hawkesbury Sandstone and learning some fascinating social and environmental history on the way.

Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf Talk at Clovelly $5 PER PERSON

This fascinating, entertaining and multiple award winning presentation by Australia’s best known surf scientist, Dr Rob Brander is not to be missed.

Nicknamed ‘Dr Rip’ because of his habit of throwing purple dye into rip currents, the presentation covers how beaches work, how to spot deadly rip currents, and importantly how to get out of one and why rock fishing is the most dangerous sport in Australia.

Keep safe in the surf this summer and understand your favourite beach better by learning how to ‘read’ the conditions of the beach and surf by attending this informative and entertaining presentation.

Six randomly chosen attendees will receive a free copy of Dr Rip’s Essential Beach Book.

Rockpool Ramble - South Maroubra$5 PER PERSON

Discover the marine creatures of the South Maroubra rock platforms and inter-tidal zone with local expert marine biologists Will Jones and Murray Cook.

As the ocean retreats it leaves an array of sea creatures on display that our local marine biologists will identify and discuss, explaining how each of us can minimise our impact on these fragile creatures.

Participants must wear closed footwear. Minimum age 5 years. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Learn to Surf at Maroubra - kids$20 PER CHILD

Interested in giving surfing a try? This popular activity promises to give kids an authentic taste of surfing while keeping them safe. Professional instructors will teach children about waves and the beach, and importantly how to keep upright on a surfboard. Adults are welcome to participate, but need to be aware that lessons will be structured around children’s learning abilities. Wetsuits and surfboards provided.

A Discovery of Coastal Birds ‘Walk & Talk’ at South Maroubra$5 PER PERSON

A fun exploration of the beautiful coastal birds around the South Maroubra sand dunes with BirdLife educator and enthusiast, Renée Ferster Levy.

From waterbirds to bush birds and some high in the sky, we hope to see lots of summertime activity - calling, feeding, wading, chasing … maybe even nesting! You’ll learn to identify birds by sight and sound, and find out how we can enhance our local habitats to help them.

Expect to get your feet wet when boarding this adventure boat to Kamay Botany Bay National Park. Experienced boat tour operators will transport you across the waters to Cook’s Landing. La Perouse Discovery Cultural Tour $10 PER PERSON

Learn from our expert guides about the Aboriginal culture at La Perouse (Guriwal). You’ll discover the local flora and fauna and learn about the region’s diverse history. This guided tour will take you through native bush and along the coastline concluding at the La Perouse Museum. You’ll explore the Dreaming of the land, taste bush tucker; be involved in a traditional ochre ceremony and a ‘Welcome to the Country’ and hear how the Aboriginal people hunted, fished & gathered throughout the area.

Walk the Fort, Bare Island guided tour $5 PER PERSON

At European contact Bare Island was associated with the Gweagal and Kameygal Aboriginal groups and referred to by Captain Cook as a “small bare island”. Since those early times, the island has experienced a variety of uses and recognitions, from being a late nineteenth century coastal defence site, a veterans home, and site location for the film Mission Impossible.

Meet your National Parks Wildlife Service Discovery Ranger at the top of the path to Bare Island. We’ll then venture and across the footbridge where you’ll share the experiences of this nationally significant place.

Meet Bligh Place Randwick (allow time for parking).

Fred Hollows Reserve guided tour$5 PER PERSON

Venture through this hidden little valley in the heart of Randwick with expert guide Danny Hirschfeld.

Starting at Bligh Place, we’ll meander along the winding trail, crossing the footbridge over the creek, through native bushland and arrive at a secluded fern gully, surprisingly close to Alison Road. Here we’ll find tranquillity in a remnant of original rainforest.

Along the way, you’ll discover local wildlife and the habitats they call home, including: rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, welcome swallows, lizards and perhaps the rare Glebe Gully Skink!
