Books for All Children Program Developing Future Leaders Who Are Readers Niles Township partnered with Bernie’s Book Bank, Youth Services of Glenview Northbrook and park districts in Niles, Skokie, Lincolnwood, Glenview and Morton Grove on a summer book collection drive. Bernie’s Book Bank, located in Lake Forest, collects, processes and distributes quality new and gently used children’s books to significantly increase book ownership among at-risk infants, toddlers and school-age children throughout Chicagoland. The Books for All Children drive gathered 15,000 books, which will be part of a semi-annual distribution at grade schools throughout Illinois. Supervisor Glazer and the Township Board have affirmed a long-term agreement with Bernie’s Book Bank to become a permanent north suburban collection point. If you have children’s books that have been outgrown or wish to contribute to Bernie’s Book Bank, please visit the Township office. We welcomed health care, fitness and pharmacy experts that provided free testing and information to attendees. Marilyn’s Corner Since assuming the Township Supervisor role last fall, I am pleased to report that we have made substantial progress by up- grading our operation in order to provide essential human services programs to an increasing number of individuals during these changing economic times. Our Township Food Pantry is now serving over 3,000 people per month. The pantry provides supplemental grocery items and in-season produce to those in-need in our community. In order to provide better service, we are beginning a renovation of the pantry facility that will include– painting, concrete maintenance and new walk-in coolers for meat and produce. Food Pantry Manager, Tony Araque, is assisted by Drake Susral and Ryan Hurban.The pantry liaison is Trustee Mark Collins. We are able to provide quality food to the community thanks to the many generous individuals and corporations who have donated to our 501C-3 charitable corporation, The Niles Township Food Pantry Foundation. Administrative Assistant Jennifer Steiner provides administrative services for this entity. Niles Township was the first in Illinois to offer the Coast2Coast prescription card program. Since its launch in 2010, it has saved residents without medical or prescription coverage over $2.2 million. The Coast2Coast program provides a prescription card offering discounts on prescription medications, lab and certain diagnostic tests at substantially reduced prices. The card is offered at no-charge and can save money on dental, vision, veterinary, hearing and diabetic equipment and supplies. Additionally, our Social Workers, Jackie Walker O’Keefe and Holly Zimmerman, continue to help hundreds of individuals navigate the social services system providing help with shelter, utilities, prescription drugs, job training/search, along with medical assistance through the Access to Care program. We also offer day-care and summer camp scholarships, so parents can maintain employment. Administrative Assistant Lauren Davis oversees this program under the direction of Trustee Donald Gelfund. Legal assistance is provided to residents 62 years and older by attorney Marcie Claus, under the supervision of Township Attorney Van Schwab. I am very proud of our Board and staff who work hard every day to provide vital services to community members. Niles Township Clerk’s Office Niles Township Clerk Charles Levy’s office provides assistance with temporary handicap placards, voter registration and notary services. Clerk Levy also serves as the Freedom of Information Officer for the Township.

Passport Services If you or family members are planning travel outside of the

United States, a valid passport is required for every traveler. Passport application services are provided at the Township office from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. First time applicants must provide a certified U.S. birth certificate or citizenship papers, a photo identification (driver’s license or state ID), two passport quality photos and fees in the form of checks or money orders. The Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County, (CEDA) provides assistance with nutrition, family literacy, medical, dental, utility vouchers and employment programs. Jerwane Ford, from CEDA is in every Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Grant RecipientsEach year the Niles Township Board reviews grant applications from local not-for-profit social service organizations and awards funding to assist in their work. The board recently approved 53 grant requests to the following organizations that provide a variety of human services within the Township. Bike Safety Rodeo Assessor Scott Bagnall hosted a Bike Safety Rodeo for children in the township on June 13th. The event provided a bicycle safety course, treats and information to keep safe cycling in the minds of the children. Trustee Tony Lundin provided support for this program.

Free Electronics Recycling Event, September 12, 2015 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Our next-door neighbor Shore Community Services is holding an electronics-recycling event at 5231 Lincoln Avenue in Skokie (in the parking lot across from the old Skokie Police Station building). Shore is a member of CyclePoint™ from SourceAmerica®, the nation’s new eRecycling network that creates sustainable jobs for people with significant disabilities.They will be accepting electronics, retired printers, computers, laptops, modems, mobile devices, cell phones, tablets and digital cameras.

Free Township Paper Shredding Event, October 10, 2015Township residents and area business owners shredded 1,500 pounds of paper at our semi-annual shredding event held in May. The Shred-X truck will be in our parking lot at 5255 Main Street, Skokie on October 10th from Noon until 2:00 p.m. Please mark your calendar.

Niles Family Resource and Wellness Fair, October 10, 2015Learn about available resources, ask questions, and gain valuable insight on what is available in Niles. Attendees can receive free blood pressure screenings, flu shots, and lab screenings. Niles Township will have a table at the event-taking place at the Niles Senior Center, 999 Civic Center Drive, from 9:00 a.m.-Noon.

Holiday Toy Drive We are seeking donations of new toys for children ages 0-18. Please drop by the Township office with your donation by December 1, 2015

Congratulations TonyTony Araque, Township Food Pantry Manager was honored with the Professional Assistance Center for Education (P.A.C.E.) program award from National Louis University in Chicago. Wendy Gearing, Assistant Director of the P.A.C.E. Program wrote “over the last 7-years Tony was able to teach job skills, life skills as well as social skills to all of the interns. Tony knows how to interact and draw out their talents and strengths. He has taught over thirty students the skills necessary to graduate P.A.C.E. and obtain gainful employment.”

The Niles Food Pantry Foundation is a 501C3 charitable corpora-tion that accepts tax-deductible cash donations to supplement our food sustenance program. If you wish to contribute, and help bring holiday cheer to fellow township residents, please stop by or mail donations to our office at 5255 Main Street in Skokie. The Foundation is also selling greeting cards through the generosity of Arts of Life, and designed by their client Russell Copenharve. These beautiful greeting cards are available for $5/each or 3/$12. Checks should be made payable to the Niles Township Food Pantry Foundation.
