Marietta City Council PTA Board Meeting Thursday, September 18, 2014 Meeting called to order at 6:42 pm. Team Graduate Marietta Program (various speakers) The district is conducting a laptop initiative with MHS (created by the Kiwanis Club) to help and motivate high achievers and a way to provide technology to help give them an edge during their academic careers. One idea was Dr. Lembeck and clubs met to discuss and developed criteria to give away a laptop as an option. The Kiwanis Club wanted to do something to have a higher impact on the local community started seeing some connectively to help students achieve. Additional initiatives shared: 1. Reading Oasis Program a. MCS is excited to fund the project (Dunleith is the first school) as a test pilot then offer it an all the additional schools in the district. 2. 5K race to support the Reading Oasis program.

a. There are a lot of initiatives, but need funding. Date is set for May 9 (night race). Leaders want students and PTA to be involved and work to get participation. Save the Date Reminders (flyers) were distributed to attendees: Promotions will begin in early 2015 (competition, t-shirts, etc.) to fund the rest of the initiatives.

Remarks:

Cindy Culver: School Nutrition Director

Cindy spoke about “Smart Snacks in School” Regulation went into effect in July 2014. There is a lot of new information. Trying to disseminate information to all the schools in support of this initiative. She conducted presentation (on screen) entitled, “Smart Snack Solutions Overview: Who? What” When? “to ensure compliance). Supporting documents were distributed.

Cindy spoke about food items to be sold to the students in a school day.

Specifics: See document for details.

New State Amendment has allowed (Marietta City) allowed up to 30 events that can last three consecutive days. Your principals are going to decide what 30 days you are going to be able to sell things in your schools that are exempted from nutrition guidelines. She also shared a list of resources: fund raising, etc. to meeting healthy choices.

PARTICIPANT INTRODUCTIONS

Council Treasurers Report: Jackie Garvin

Reported that the budget was approved and council books have been audited. Everything with books are in order. Reports were passed out. Jackie reported that this year’s goal is the make sure books are in order to be better prepared for next crew. Requested that treasurers submit audits by end of September. The 990 IRS reports are due November 15 to State but Council would like to have them by October 15. Jackie requested a copy of budget and dues. She will send copies out via email, will periodically meet to check in to ensure books are in order, and will be in contact with respective treasurer to review budget.

A vote was moved to present the budget. Kara Vicini for MCAA made motion to move budget. Tye requested a vote to approve the school year. Budget was passed and approved.

Lisa Mays – Reflections

Presented information and sent information via email on a weekly basis for details.

Council deadline is October 24, (Friday). She asked everyone to contact her to submit information and deadlines for reflections (November 20, celebration for all participants). She reported that she has not received much response thus far.

Lisa reminded attendants to post information about Reflections. All details need to be submitted to Lisa so that she can forward to the state. Looking for all the participation this year. Encouraged participation and distributed Handbook.

Upcoming Events:

District 9 Conference (September 30, 2014). North Star Church, Kennesaw, GA

Judges Rubric provided to serve as a guide to help judges and serve as a guide.

Remarks: Dr. Lembeck

Thanked all the volunteers and teachers. She said teachers are working harder than ever and expressed her sincere appreciation for all the teachers and heartfelt efforts in learning and teaching. Dr. Lembeck reported that MCS teachers will be administering the Georgia Milestones. CRCT (went away) as part of end of other end of grade testing. Specified details.

Additional News:

“Graduate Marietta” and Marietta Essentials, are system-wide focus to graduate more students; making them prepared (critical). Need to be equipped, self-starters, beginning in Kindergarten. MCS has begun training and implementing teachers in kindergarten in systematic phonics instruction. Providing tools and support to help students succeed.

Marietta Kickoff #12; literacy scores have remained high. MHS has been a winner for the last four years.

Middle Years Program (6-10); being re-energized. School system is working to strengthen. Coming through the system much stronger. IB Program and Career Path (one of a few in the world). MHS is one of five schools in the world approved to participate in a research study. The Dells Foundation provides funding with those getting IB Diplomas. Stats are better for MHS than you see in the state nation and world (in terms of diversity). MCS is on the radar for great things.

Miscellaneous Announcements:

Homecoming is Friday, October 17, 2014.

Northcutt Stadium Renovation will begin November 2014. Last game is going to be played on Halloween. Thanked everyone for support.

Tye passed out Survival Kit to all attendees and thanked everyone for their heartfelt efforts for a positive, productive, and fun school year.
