MOVING FORWARD
NEWS FROM PSSA’S GRANTS ADMINISTRATOR
This heat and high humidity reminds me that snow and lower temperatures are just a few months away. I am happy that others enjoy this type of weather.
In spite of the heat many of our clubs are working on their trails. This is a year round commitment. Thank you. Clubs should have received the information concerning the next round of grants. Use the money wisely as this may be the last grant which can be used for equipment and trail maintenance.
Reminders: House Bill 544 which deals with landowner protection was committed out of committee. However, it still has a long way to go until it is voted on in the House and Senate. Continue calling your State Representatives and Senators. This bill is very important to our trail system. Thank you to all those who made the first calls. We need to continue the calls and emails and show our Representatives that HB 544 is very important to us.
Plan to attend the Annual PowerSport Show October 27 -5pm – October 29 – 3:30 pm
Features include: Friday night (weather permitting) the “Tough Trucks”. The Tractor Pulls will return for the Saturday event. An Antique Car Show is being planned for the Sunday event. This show has something for everyone. The Show will have our vendors, used sled corral, auction, used clothing booth, ticket sales and PSSA clothing as always. The trailer and ATV drawing will be held at 3:30 pm. Plan to be there. Help support your Association!
Volunteers are needed. If you can help in any way contact Travis Mathna the PowerSport Chair at (1-717-677-8089).
Year Two planning of the “Snow Trails” video project is almost complete.
Year Two will feature the Poconos and Huntingdon County plus Erie County and the PA Wild’s. We are in need of sponsors from the PA Wilds – Benezette/Clearfield/ St. Mary’s area. One may have the good fortune to see an Elk during a snowmobile ride in these areas! Any business, tourism bureau or person can help sponsor an area. This is a great opportunity for your trails to be given national attention thru his TV show. The “Snow Trails” TV program is currently changing to Sunday morning at 8am. Contact Lori Elliott, Grant Administrator for further information. (717-236-2050 ext 127 or [email protected] )
Registration Fee Increase: Since the current fee of $10 has been the rate for many years most members recognize the situation as in need of a sizable increase. If we want the trails to continue we will need to embrace a sizeable increase in the next year or two. You should plan ahead for an increase.
Is the glass half-full or half empty? I think it is important to keep a perspective on this fee. What does $25 - $50 buy today? (Haircut, good dinner, case of beer, nice blouse/shirt, DVR) What did the sled cost that you are riding? The clothing and equipment that you purchased?
It is important to note that Nothing has been finalized and discussions will continue with DCNR. As of this writing I am waiting for more information. We need facts before we can discuss anything.
Meanwhile, we have sleds which are not registered or carry insurance. Clubs need to work with the local State Police and establish a Safety Check Program for their area. The Snowmobile Fund needs every sled to be registered. Clubs need to insist on this at their events. Why increase the fee if we are not going to have law enforcement on our trails. It is up to each one of us to promote trails in Pennsylvania.
Tickets for chances on the two trailers donated by Blizzard and an ATV donated by the dealers should be returned promptly. Please be generous. All proceeds are used to support PSSA programs.
The next Board meeting will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2017. Give your comments, ideas or concerns to any Board member. We need your ideas to help improve PSSA.
Thank you To Ginny and Dale Kline for their many years of service to PSSA and the Snow Angel Fund. This Fund has helped many children with medical issues. Ginny has now resigned as Chair. If you are interested in this worthwhile project notify a Board member.
Think Snow!(Let’s do a SNOW dance!)
Liz Krug, PresidentPS. PowerSport Show – Starts Friday October 27 at 5pm and ends Sunday October 29 with drawings at 3:30 pm.
Hello, PSSA members,I am happy to
report that we recently announced the opening of another round of mini-grants. This round will be Round I from our
Round 22 grant from DCNR. This grant was awarded from our 2016 application to DCNR. Club contacts should have received an email and a paper application in the mail. They were mailed on July 11th so check your post office boxes if you have not yet seen the application. An application and the accompanying memo of important information can also be downloaded from the PSSA website. Applications are due into the PSSA Grants Office by August 11, 2017.
We recently closed several mini-grants, so I am still calculating the amount of funds that remain from previous open grants. I will announce that information as soon as I can. Clubs, be thinking about projects that are of an emergency nature for which you would need some financial assistance.
While reviewing the narrative summaries that are required as part of the final mini-grant report, I enjoyed reading about all of the work and progress that clubs have made with these mini-grant funds. I’d like to share (with his permission, of course) Neil Diamond’s narrative summary for the Rolling Ridge Snowmobile Club as a testimonial of the effect the clubs, PSSA and these mini-grant funds from DCNR have on Pennsylvania snowmobile trails.
“We as officers and also club members would like to thank everyone at the PSSA and the DCNR for all of the time and effort they put into securing funding and distributing it throughout PA to the clubs. It’s people like you that help keep our sport alive for future families to enjoy. The grants allow us to make a safer more enjoyable trail system for people of all ages. My sons will be old enough next year to ride our trail system by themselves. When I was their age 25 years ago the trail system that we now maintain was not taken care of at all. The trail was tight with trees, snowdrifts and bulldozed roads. Sometimes it was impassable, that left for dangerous conditions, and we often never snowmobiled in the beautiful mountains. I am proud that we are making this difference for younger generations. A lot of our officers and members have younger children.”
There are many reports like Neil’s that are submitted. Thank you, Neil, for these words and thank you to all of the club mini-grant recipients who work hard on these projects. Be sure you are there to help your local club.

Hello from The Chickaree Ridge Runners Recreation and Rescue Snowmobile Club. Hello from Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club. Just wanted to let everyone know what has been happening up on the mountain.
Well, it’s late July; it’s mid-summer; and it’s hot! That translates to not much happening at a snowmobile club – our club being no exception.
We did however hold our annual chicken barbeque at the June monthly meeting. I wasn’t able to attend this year, but after talking to some of our members who were in attendance, a really good time was had by all. Good food, good friends, and a great location equals a good time.
A few of our past members who have since given up snowmobiling and have retired (so-to-speak) from the lodge, were at the chicken barbeque. It is always nice to see them back at
Meetings are held the first and third Thursday of each month from Sept. thru April and the first Thursday from May thru Aug. They start at 8:00pm and are held at our clubhouse.
Be safe and as always, THINK SNOW,Sincerely,
Chuck Baligush, Vice President
the lodge. Thus, it’s really nice spending the day outside at the picnic area listening to the stories told of days gone by snowmobiling at the lodge.
When it comes to telling the history of our lodge, I don’t want to exclude anyone, but one in particular to me stands out above and beyond the others: Vic Carlson. I for one could sit for hours with a smile on my face laughing at the stories Vic has to share. That’s a very important part of any clubs’ success….keeping its history alive through stories shared.
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer; there’s still a whole lot left to enjoy.
Well that’s about all for now. Just a little over 4-months left until the new snowmobile season! Talk to ya next month.

The Marienville Trail Riders Snowmobile Club members have had a busy summer and are preparing for a great winter! That is if Mother Nature cooperates. The club has seen many improvements to their Allegheny National Forest Trail system and have added another groomer, a BR 180 Bombardier to go along with their Track Truck. The club grooms approximately 54 miles of connector trails and plan on grooming 40 additional miles of the ANF Trail 1 Loop that goes through Marienville. In the past, the Forest Service contracted the grooming of the 115 mile loop to a private contractor but with the cut in DCNR funding it has required the Marienville Trail Riders to groom from Russell City south toward Kellettville. The club is ready for the challenge. Club members are getting ready for their fall picnic which will
be Sunday, September 17, 2017. The picnic will be held at Roxanne and Jerry Thornton’s residence and will start at 3pm. The address is 323 West Maple Street, Marienville Pa.. Their house is located 1 block off of trail 1, just one block west of the East Forest High School. The club is furnishing hot dogs and hamburgers. All club members are encouraged to bring a covered dish. The club meeting will be at 3pm followed by the picnic at approximately 4 pm. The club is also preparing to have a booth during the Marienville Octoberfest which will be during the weekend of September 22-24. We will be having our scarecrow lottery, Plinko, Chinese auction and grill raffle. SEE YOU ON THE TRAILS!

MARIENVILLE TRAIL RIDERS SMCHowdy, Howdy from the top of the
mountain, Pigeon Hill Road, Germania, PASorry about missing last month. My work
took me out of state for a while. It’s been a rainy, wet spring and into the beginning of summer. This is great for our farmers and their crops. It is also great for our lawns and gardens. I am hoping this pattern remains the same into fall and winter. We need a good winter for all our snowmobilers, and clubs. I want to hear riders saying about the 1000-1500 miles they rode in PA this winter.
All members have received their letters and tickets for our summer picnic. Please take a moment to fill them out and return them so they don’t get lost or get put in file 13.
Next meeting is Thursday evening, August 3, 2017 at 7:30 pm at our clubhouse. Any members wanting to be on the election ballot must have petitions turned in by the end of the meeting. We have positions as officers and Board of Directors open. Please plan to attend.
Calendar of events:Saturday, September 2nd: Summer
picnic-11:00 am until 5:00 pm.
Bingo, horse shoes, corn hole, raffles, door prizes, $20 tickets/500 club drawing 2:30-4:30 with $5000.00 cash. Also, a $500.00 cash drawing. Please bring a dish or dessert to pass. All other food and beverages are provided by the club. We are also trying a flea market/swap meet. Please bring your tables, tents and items to sell, swap or trade. There are plenty of shady areas to set-up. First come, first served.
Saturday, September 16th: Annual work detail from 8:00 am until finished. We will be cleaning, painting, staining, trail maintenance, trimming, along with weed eating, mowing and bush hogging. Bring your saws, 4-wheelers, string trimmers and hedge trimmers. A light breakfast and good lunch will be provided by the club.
Hope to see a good turnout for the August 3rd meeting. Also, we could use some help with food preparation, bingo, and drawings on Saturday, September 2nd. Please contact Bryan at 717.418.5107 if you can help.See you later, I’m gone!!!

Hello from the Laurel Highlands. It’s time for our annual end of summer
celebration at the clubhouse. Our Hayride and covered dish picnic will be on August 12th at 6:00 PM. We will have a regular workday prior to the picnic to set up for the party and finish chores around the club. The club provides the condiments, paper ware, water, pop, hot dogs, hamburgers, and fresh corn on the cob. Bob Anisley will bring his hay wagon for a trail ride out to Seven Springs and back. The other tasty treats are up to those in attendance. We really enjoy meeting up to see how everyone’s summer went. We also use this time to relax and dream about our upcoming winter adventures. This is an opportunity for everyone to get to know club members better face to face. Come see who is usually behind the helmets on the mountain.
Our race committee has the track coming together nicely in preparation for next month’s first race of the season. Our races are September 17th and October 8th. Spectators are encouraged. Parking is free with the price of admission, and there is food concession on site. Local dealerships set up booths to explore, and the local clubs are there to provide information about the area. New this year is a
mini-sled bracket class. Last year, we set several speed records for our track. We can’t wait to see the challengers this year. For more information about the races check out our Facebook page, website, www.LHSC.net, or contact Sheila at [email protected].
Our June and July workdays were devoted to race track work, clean up, and mowing around the club. Thank you to all of the year round volunteers who make our club look great. We rely on you to keep us going strong.
Thank you to Art Engleka, Brad Hoover, and Linda Walker for serving their terms on the LHSC board of directors. All three have served as board officers for the past three years, and devoted much of their free time to keeping our club running smoothly. We greatly appreciate how often you have gone above and beyond expectations. Our nomination period has come to an end at the July meeting, and elections will take place in September. Our next club meeting is on Thursday, August 10th, at 8:00 PM in the clubhouse.
Until next time, Stay safe,Jim Wilkinson and Shelly Buckles

This will be another very exciting year for the PSSA Powersports Show Used Sled Corral. The Used Sled Corral has become one of the most popular features of the show, and this year we’ll again enjoy that excitement with the show at Lebanon in October.
The building at Lebanon allows us to offer “drive-thru service” for unloading and loading of sleds and trailers. Persons wishing to bring units in for consignment will need to complete the necessary paperwork prior to driving into the building.
We’ve mentioned Used Sleds (snowmobiles) and Trailers, but don’t forget we also include ATV’s and Motorcycles. If you have something to sell, or are looking to buy, this is the place where you can see a larger selection than you’ll find anywhere else. The Powersports Show has very often had more than 100 used snowmobiles and more than 30 used trailers for sale. You folks all across the state – here is your opportunity to turn those used machines into cash, so make plans now to bring them to Lebanon in October.
Dealers are always welcome to bring used sleds and other units into the Corral. It’s the best way to find a buyer for that machine that’s been just waiting for the right owner. Private sellers and dealers alike are encouraged to contact us with basic information of the machines you’ll be bringing to sell. Your sleds, trailers, ATV’s and motorcycles will be listed right here in the Keystone Snowmobiler in the September and October issues. Remember that the deadline is always the 10th of the month prior to publication. Contact us by Aug. 10th to be in the September edition, and by Sept. 10th to be listed in the October edition.
The Used Sled Corral has always been a very fun place to volunteer some of your time during the show. We are looking forward to our many dedicated volunteers helping us once again at Lebanon. If you are an “old faithful” or somebody new, please contact us for more information about volunteering. Call us at 717-633-5051, or e-mail : [email protected]
Thanks in advance,Peggy & Henry Hartman
