Handy Pantry. You will be committing to "walk your block” at least once a month, picking up litter, keeping aneye out for hazards and just being "eyes" on your block.

Last year the Brooklyn Action Corps’ Emergency Preparedness Committee launchedBrooklyn Prepared!, an educational program aimed at teaching our neighbors how toprepare for a widespread emergency. We are resuming the program again this year andare requesting volunteers from each block in Brooklyn to host two 90-minute “blockparties.” These parties will be taught by a trained neighborhood volunteer and will coverinformation on the types of disasters most likely to occur in Portland and how to preparefor these disasters for yourself, your family and as a group of neighbors.

The goal of these preparedness parties is for our neighborhood to achieve the most positive outcome possiblewhen disaster strikes. It is a startling fact that if a widespread disaster were to occur, Portland’s emergency responsesystem (police, fire and medical teams) would be overwhelmed. Most likely, during a disaster you will need to dependon yourself and your neighbors. By hosting the two block parties you will learn how to be prepared for disaster andabout your neighbors’ skill sets and resources and establish or strengthen neighborhood ties.

Please consider volunteering to be a host. We are ready to schedule these block meetings. Again, we will bring allthe educational materials and instruct the programs, you just need to invite your neighbors and open your home.Help us build a more resilient community!

For more information or to sign up as a host, send us an email at [email protected].

Truck Traffic Problems in East Brooklyn

The BAC is continuing to work on traffic issues on SE 26th Street. Spurred by the large increase in freight trafficusing the east access to Union Pacific’s Brooklyn Railyard, representatives from Brooklyn have been meeting withrepresentatives from Creston-Kenilworth as well as other transportation and bicycle consultants to look for solu-tions to these truck traffic problems. The traffic is due to the recent expansion of the railyard and results in large 18-wheel freight trucks using side streets (25th and 26th) that were not designed for such large vehicles. Vibration andnoise impacts to residences are increasing along with increased exposure to carcinogenic diesel particulates.

We are meeting with assistance from the SE Uplift Neighborhood Coalition and havereceived a promise from the city to replace a missing street sign so far. If you are inter-ested in attending these monthly meetings, please contact us [email protected] or call the Brooklyn Helpline at 971-222-9454.

Business Focus

WELCOME TO BROOKLYN!

Neighborhood Has Input at January Meeting

The Brooklyn Action Corp’s first general meeting of 2017 was well attended by our fellow Brooklynites. This meeting in January continues to serve as our neighborhood community visioning/planning meetingfor the upcoming year. The following are some of the issues, concerns, and ideas that were presented by ourneighbors:

1. Graffiti/homeless issues were presented and neighbors informed of Office of NeighborhoodInvolvement (ONI)

2. Additional Dwelling Units (ADUs), need to make sure that owners follow the necessary steps toinform neighbors of development plans.

3. Crime: Please remember to report, call, document any suspicious behavior or crime. The moreinformation we can provide to the city and police bureau, the more momentum we generate foraction and resources.

4. BAC will increase communication with neighbors, update email methods, such asBrooklyn Happening, Nextdoor and Facebook.

5. Keep neighbors informed on city/business/transportation development. (We have formed aLand Use Transportation Committee)

6. Would like to have more neighborhood meet-ups/community events, for example: Oaks Bottom(Nature walk), Summer family program, 4th of July event.

7. Organize a community project to connect with the new family shelter on Milwaukie.8. Safety/Livability issues:

Crosswalks on Milwaukie,More street lighting to 17th & Rhine Max Station,Improve access to the river,Anything and all the things to slow traffic, increase walkability, increase bike safety and bikeconnectivity, and build community resiliency.

9. Post meeting minutes to our website and social media platforms (increase communication andtransparency.)
