How did you come to volunteer at Marianjoy and what do you find most rewarding
about your experience here?
My wife and I were both coming to Marianjoy for outpatient therapy when I learned about
the volunteer program. Because of my multiple sclerosis, I am on long-term disability but
I knew I wanted to keep myself busy and active – and volunteering in the mailroom at
Marianjoy lets me do just that. Not only do I have the opportunity to interact with the
staff, I get a chance to give back to the disabled community.

How did you come to volunteer at Marianjoy and what do you find most
rewarding about your experience here?
In 1990, I suffered two strokes during seven brain surgeries to correct a very risky arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Afterward, I wanted to give back to Marianjoy in appreciation for how they helped me so much in my recovery. I started in 1997, and spend time visiting with patients and sharing my own journey and rehabilitation experience with them. I believe this helps the patients – and it helps me to recover even more too. After everything I have been through medically, I know this is why I am still here!

How did you come to volunteer at Marianjoy and what do you find most
rewarding about your experience here?
After being a patient here and completing my therapy, I wanted to express my gratitude to Marianjoy. I also wanted to improve my skills using the Tobii and rocker switch (items I use to help me with communication). My main reason was because I love to volunteer and wanted to help in any way I could. I was a volunteer in high school and college, so why stop now?
The most rewarding part of volunteering in the Speech Therapy department at Marianjoy is that I can assist the hospital that assisted me. The experience I acquire from volunteering is a reward in itself, and the knowledge I learn about the field of rehabilitation could be considered a reward as well. Basically, Marianjoy helps me by allowing me to volunteer.

How did you come to volunteer at Marianjoy and what do you find most
rewarding about your experience here?
I was a registered nurse before I stayed home to raise my children. Once they were grown, I wanted to do something related to nursing again so I started working in the Patient Care Services department at Marianjoy. I had never worked in the field of rehabilitation and what I find most rewarding is seeing patients returning to the life they had before their injury or illness.

How did you come to volunteer at Marianjoy and what do you find most
rewarding about your experience here?
While my wife was a patient, I spent time here visiting her and I noticed how the volunteers were such a large part of the hospital’s operation. What I find most rewarding about being a Marianjoy transport volunteer is knowing that I’m making a positive impact in the overall care of a patient, while being able to be there for them as they work through their rehabilitation process.
