• The Master plan is the overall scheme over land usage and traffic arrangements. The plan covers the whole city and directs planning on the more detailed level.

• The Local plans examine the whole city more precisely than the Master plan. The Local plan contains planned locations for functions like living, work and recreation. The Local plan will later direct the more detailed plan for the area, the detailed plan level, which usually is carried out in zones.

• The Detailed plan regulates for what purpose a certain piece of land can be used and how much can be built on it. The regulations also consider the height of buildings, the width of streets and other matters that will affect on the structure and the townscape of the area. The plan is submitted to the town council to reach legal validity.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS IN CITY PLANNNINGLANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS IN CITY PLANNNING

Landscape planning in Helsinki is integrated within the land use planning

process, both in master plan and detailed plan levels.

The Environmental Unit aims to create preconditions for a diverse living environment rich in recreational values.

We are responsible for a green areas strategy for the whole city.

Our primary concern is to bring forward and guard landscape related values in the city planning process, and to develop the green areas structure on these grounds.

The landscape architects have local knowledge, but also a holistic vision of the role of green areas in the city scale.

”Back to basics”

Basic elements:

1. Pedestrian axes; monumental and functional

2. Powerful water feature

3. Series of thematic gardens

- southern square at the cutting edge/intersection/encounter spot of these

Basic concept:

Express and make visible the dynamics of the place
