Pastor Bob’s Message

I am a baseball fan, and I love to tell baseball stories. Let me tell you one that took place in 2019. The Washington Nationals beat the Houston Astros in 7 games. This is the first time in world series history that neither team won a home game. The series started in Houston, and the Nationals won both games there, then the game moved to Washington D.C. where the Astros won three straight games, and finally, the series moved back to Houston, where the Nationals win the last two games. That is a great story; however, a better one is of the National’s third basemen, Anthony Rendon. Rendon is coming off the best seasons of his career and was one of the leading candidates for the MVP award (He did not win). However, more important

to Rendon than baseball is his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He told the Washington Post, “You want to plan for the future, but I’ve come to learn your plans don’t always come to fruition. Obviously, with my faith, too, I don’t want to seem like it’s all about me, me, me. It takes away from what I do for Him, for the Lord.” Rendon stressed, “I want to be known as a Christian baseball player and I’m still trying to grow into that. But, in the end, I want to be more Christian than a baseball player.”

What if we all understood that our identity revolves less around what we do than Who has called us to do it? What difference could it make in your life and work if you view yourself as a Christian first and foremost, and only then as your assigned work or job?

For example, think of the difference it would make if we saw ourselves as Christian parents and Christian spouses, Christian brothers and or Christian sisters. What a difference it would make if we never separated the identity established by the first from the responsibilities borne by the second. Joshua, for example, was God’s general. David was God’s king. Elijah was God’s prophet. Paul was God’s Apostle. These men weren’t perfect, but each had an outsized influence on the Kingdom of God because they kept their focus on Who called them more than on what they were called to do.

We celebrate Thanksgiving in November. As Christians, we can practice Thanksgiving every day. I am so, so thankful to God for you, the members of Bellview Baptist Church. I feel thankful to God for allowing me to be part of His work through the local Church.

Being a Christian is the best decision I have ever made, what about you? We all should be thankful that the Lord has allowed us to be a part of His family. There are many different people types in His family. One thing we all have in common (besides His forgiveness) is that we are all sinners, sinners saved by God’s Grace.
