MISSION... To develop and execute a compre-hensive education program that offers military students the best education opportunities in a safe and high quality school setting while
maintaining a sense of military com-munity and peer support.
The MacDill AFB School Liaison Program is designed to support the social and academic transition of military children affi liated with the base. This pro-gram will get families connected with the local school systems, will guide in the selection of the school that best fi ts your child’s interest/needs, and will ensure families are well-informed about local education poli-cies, procedures and registration requirements.
UNDERSTANDING MILITARY CHILDREN NEEDSThe most diffi cult aspect of military service is the fre-quency of required household relocations. While the armed forces provide a great deal of support to the military member, the burden of supporting military spouses and children often fall back to the military family. One of the greatest challenges associated with frequent military moves is fi nding quality K-12 educational institutions.
WHY IS QUALITY OF EDUCATION IMPORTANT? School safety and lack of quality education is linked to military readiness and retention. The constant relocation of military students has created a need to enrich and expand partnerships with military connected communities to ensure the best possible educational opportunities are available.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOLChoosing the right school for your child takes careful planning, research, and strategy. You need to deter-mine which school setting or program is most suited for your child. In our county, several school options are offered, neighborhood area, choice, magnet, career/technical, charter, virtual, and home schools. Visit the Hillsborough Public School District (HCPSD) website athttp://tinyurl.com/hcpsoptions to fi nd the school that best fi ts your child’s needs.
STAYING INFORMED AS A PARENTState Law – Florida’s A+ Plan, School Grades: School Grades are based on how well students have mas-tered the Sunshine State Standards. For informa-tion on school grades, adequate yearly progress, and school choice options, please visit the Department of Education’s website at www.fl doe.org or call 1-800-447-1636. Information about the Next Generation (Common Core) State Standards is available at www.fl doe.org.
