March: Intellectual Disability

In March we dealt with intellectual disabilities and particularly with Down syndrome.

The syndrome was first noted by British physician John Langdon Down (hence the name), in 1866 when he noticed that many people unrelated, that were in different institutions, have similar physical characteristics, such as pug nose, thick and wide ends.

Down's syndrome is due to the presence in the cells of individuals, a third chromosome 21 instead of two, which is customary.

Since 2006 it has been established March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day on the initiative of Stylianos Greek doctor Antonarakis, genetics professor at the University of Geneva.

On the occasion, therefore this day we held a videoconference with the Special Olympics Hellas.

In the teleconference participated two athletes, Olga Dasoura and John Stratigopoulos, and two coaches Eirini Trompeta and Eirini Kapari. Athletes transporting students the experiences lived through their participation in the Games and integration opportunities that are gaining through the movement of the Special Olympics. The coaches showed their sport and answered students' questions. We thank the athletes, the coaches and the manager, Mrs Artemis Vasilikopoulou who responded directly to our invitation.

April: Autism

In April, we dealt with a developmental disorder called autism.

We talked about the features in the behavior of children belonging to the spectrum of autism.

However, in order to understand the autistic spectrum we contacted Mrs. Panagiota fillers, the author of the children's book “I'm not a monster, I’m telling you”. The reason we chose this book, was that its hero was Agapios, a guy who is on the spectrum.

After reading the book, we talked with her, she solved us some questions and we got a small interview.

Then, on physical education we played a very nice experiential game based on the technique of six thinking hats. We make another hat, the hat of autism. The same game we shared with our little friends from elementary school of Nea Triglia.

Our program was completed in the best possible way: we contacted and talked via Skype with students of elementary school of Vartholomio.
