At what age does one become obligated to perform this custom? A: The 16th century Ashkenazik Halakhic authority, the Rema, writes (694:1) that our custom is to perform Machatzit HaShekel before Mincha on Taanit Esther. There are many who have the custom though to give it after Mincha, before hearing the Megila (see Psikeit Tshuvot 694:3). If one is not able to do Machazit HaShekel at these times he may still do it throughout the month of Adar. Regarding the age at which one becomes obligated to observe this custom, the Rema notes that only those who are twenty years of age and older are obligated to perform the Machatzit HaShekel. The Mishna Brura (694:5), authored by Rav Yisrael Meir Ha'Kohen Kagan (1839- 1933) writes that there are those who say that one is obligated already from the age of thirteen. He explains that either way, the custom is for one to give even for young children and even for an unborn fetus. There is a dispute as to whether women are obligated to do Machatzit HaShekel, but everyone agrees that it is preferable for them to do it. FROM YICC’S SEFER MINHAGIM SHABBAT ZACHOR, TAANIT ESTHER & PURIM

1) On Shabbat Zachor we do not say Av Harachamim before

Musaf. 2) On the Shabbat Zachor we do say Tzidkatcha Tzedek and Kel

Maleh at Minha on Shabbat afternoon. 3) On Shabbat Zachor we do not take out a Sefer Torah after

davening just to reread Parashat Zachor; rather it is read again

at Mincha after the reading of the regular Shabbat afternoon

Torah reading. In this case the Torah used for the regular

reading is rolled to Parashat Zachor. No Brakhot are recited

before or after the reading. 4) Everyone stands for the Torah reading of Parashat Zachor. 5) We repeat the last Pasuk of Parshat Zachor, the first time saying

Zeikher (with a Segol) and the second time Zeikher (with a

Tzeirei). 6) The Haftorah for Shabbat Zachor is taken from Sefer Shmuel I

15:2 and begins with the words Ko Amar Hashem. 7) Machzit HaShekel is observed at Minha on Taanit Esther. It is

collected through Shacharit on Purim 8) On Taanit Esther at Shacharit we say Selichot and Avenu

Malkenu. We do not say Avenu Malkenu at Minha. 9) On Purim and Shushan Purim we do not recite Tachanun

and Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and Uva Le’Tzion. 10) A mourner during the 12 months for a parent may lead the

davening on Purim both for Minha & Maariv, but should not lead

Shacharit. 11) On Purim and Shushan Purim we do not recite Tachanun, Kel

Erech Apayim, and Lamenatzeach.
