    Louis Grisolia Rolled 300

    At South Levittown Lanes

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. Pete Weber of St.

Ann, Mo., became the most successful bowler in

U.S Open history Sunday, winning the most chal-lenging major title in bowling for a record fifth time

at Brunswick Zone-Carolier with a strike on his

final ball in the 10th frame to nip top qualifier Mike

    Fagan of Dallas, 215-214.

Weber, who came into the stepladder finals as the

No. 4 qualifier, threw clutch shots in three matches

to win, but none was more critical than his strike on

his final ball in the title match. Needing at least a

nine-count spare and strike to win, Weber threw a

perfect pocket shot on his first ball, but left a 10 pin.

After converting the spare, he threw an identical

shot that carried for a strike.

In winning the title, Weber broke a tie with his late

    father, Professional Bowlers Association legend

Dick Weber, and his fathers close friend, the late

Don Carter, who each won the forerunner to the

U.S. Open the BPAA All Star four times.Dad, I know you were watching, Weber said as

he looked up toward heaven after the win. I know

youre proud, and Im sorry I broke your record.

This is my greatest title ever, Weber said. To

win five U.S. Opens and pass Dick Weber and Don

Carter says a lot, but Ill never say Im better than

them. They paved the way for us to be here. It was

an honor and a privilege to join them when I won

my fourth U.S. Open, and its even more of an

honor to be the first one to win five.

This is the tournament I look forward to ever

year, he added. I live for the U.S. Open because

I know, no matter what, I have a chance to win.

At age 49 years, 189 days, Weber became the

oldest player ever to win the U.S. Open, breaking

the record set by 46-year-old Norm Duke last year

at Carolier. And he moved into second place on the

PBAs all-time major title-winners list with his

ninth title, behind only Earl Anthonys 10.

Thats probably the calmest Ive ever been

needing to throw a shot to win, he added. Not to

toot my own horn, but I think Im prouder of

myself than anyone else. Ive always wanted to be

the one to throw a strike to win.

In advancing to the title match, Weber threw crit-

ical shots in two preliminary matches, coming

from behind to defeat Ryan Shafer of Horseheads,

N.Y., 223-191, in the opening match and

Australias Jason Belmonte, 225-213, in the semi-

    final contest.

I threw strikes in the seventh, eighth and ninth

in all three games and put pressure on those guys,

Weber said. The way those guys performed was

excellent. My hats off to them. They bowled

    amazing.

Weber earned $60,000 and an automatic berth in

the Round of 36 for the PBA Tournament of

Champions in April. Fagan collected $30,500,

Belmonte $15,000 and Shafer, who failed to win a

title in his 14th television appearance in a major

    championship, earned $10,000.

14-Year-Old Kamron Doyle Becomes Youngest Casher in PBA Tour History NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. Kamron

    Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., 14-years-old

stole the show in the 69th U.S. Open at

Brunswick Zone-Carolier by earning a spot

in the cashers round and becoming the

youngest player ever to cash in a

    Professional Bowlers Association Tour

    event.

Not only did he cash, but the 5-foot-5,

105-pound eighth grader picked the most

difficult tournament in the sport for his

    record-setting performance.

Doyle, who cashed in a PBA South

Regional event in Canton, Ga., two years

ago at age 12 (a record for non-national tour

events) when he finished 30th, averaged

202 for his 18 qualifying games in the U.S.

Open and advanced to the cashers round in

54th place out of a field of 394 amateur and

    professional bowlers from 12 countries.

Doyle, who turned 14 on Jan. 13, bowled

all three qualifying rounds on the same pair

of lanes with PBA Hall of Famer Johnny

    Petraglia of Jackson, N.J., a 14-time PBA

Tour champion and one of only six players

to ever complete the PBA Triple Crown.

Petraglia, who turns 65 on March 3, beat

Doyle by seven pins, but he had to out-score

the teenager, 219-184, in the final game to

    do it.

(Kamron) dumped the last game out of

    respect, Petraglia laughed.

I wasnt thinking about beating him,

Doyle said matter-of-factly. I was just try-

    ing to beat myself.

Surprisingly, he doesnt come from a

bowling family. His father, Sean Doyle, is a

    Nashville area orthodontist.

    Kamron finished 61st good for a $1,340

    payday.

    HACKENSACK, NJ Each week

in Stan Niemiec Youth Travel play,

    league-leading Holiday seems to have

a different bowler take the reins in

keeping the squad on a winning note.

    This time, Paramus Catholic sopho-

more Brian Rizzi came through with

    224-181-234 for a 639 set, earning

Bowler of the Week recognition for the

sessions best series, as Holiday edged

Bowler City III, 4-3. In addition to

Brian, the victors received fine outings

    from Ramapo seniors Kevin Macchia

235-609 and Mike Carr 217-595, but it

was their youngest player NickCilentos closing 222 that helped lift

Holiday to a scant nine-pin win in the

    finale.

For BC III, Nick Ferrante was out-

standing, rolling well over average in

totaling the days high gross set of 759

by compiling a net 546; also better than

average was Kristen Kane who con-

    tributed a 171.

Fair Lawn closed to within five

points of the top by taking five of seven

points from Bowler City IV after a

sluggish start. Madison Perry had the

sessions high handicap game of 266

and totaled a 720 gross set, on the

strength of her well above average net

tally of 179-459. Her Fair Lawn team-

    mates Steve Plaszky and Hassan

Izzard chipped in with net scores of

    182 and 160 respectively.

BC IV grabbed the opener behind a

concerted above mark effort from the

entire quartet, led by Deanna Jeune 155

    and Louis Ferrante 149.

In other matches, Boonton crept to

within a point of third place Bowler

City I by coming from behind to upend

the latter, 2545-2529 in a tightly played

contest. Justin Puchalski led the win-ners with a closing 258, the afternoons

    best single, while his teammates

    Patrick Teshima 192,187 and Karl

Kattermann 188,177 helped seal the tri-

    umph.

Bowler City II bounced back after

dropping the opener by rolling strong

handicap scores of 937 and 927 to take

two of three games from Montvale.

    Nick Reyes sizzled with back-to-back

deuces of 215 and 222 while James

Kane added 199 and176 and Kyle

    Schellberg 191. Montvales best was

    Katie Didonados 176-51.

FARMINGDALE, NY - A field of 34 junior

bowlers competed in Farmingdale Lanes monthly

    handicap scholarship tournament on Sunday

February 12th. As is the case each month, the top 5

qualifiers moved to the finals. They were, in qualify-

ing order 5th, to 1st: Maria Lucente, Mike Ryan, Ian

Carson, Nathan Smith and John Daly.

Overall, better than 1 in 4 entries won scholarship

prizes. Handicap for the tournament is 80% of 220.

Game #1 of the finals matched Maria, Mike and Ian

against one another with the winner moving on to

Game #2. Mike Ryan, quick out of the gate, shot 259

and advanced. Maria finished 5th, and won a $30.00

scholarship prize. Finishing 4th, Ian earned a $45.00

    scholarship prize.

In match # 2 Mike Ryan, throwing the ball well,

couldnt match Nathan Smiths tenacity, losing a

close one and finishing 3rd collecting a $60.00 schol-

arship prize. Tournament leader John Daly, waiting

patiently, now faced Nathan for the tournament

championship. Nathan bowling very well, got in

front and stayed there, winning his 1st Farmingdale

Lanes Scholarship Championship and a $125.00

scholarship prize. John Dalys 2nd, place earned him

    $85.00 in scholarship money.
